Jersey modding?

Postby xuanivitale on Mon Sep 16, 2024 3:42 am

Playing around with jersey mods was my favorite part of modding 2K23 and 24 these last couple of years and I was really hoping the format would remain the same, but it seems It's WAY more complicated now :(

Here's some of my findings so far:

The good(ish) part:

We still have color, normal and region files for jerseys and shorts like we used to and they are in fact the format for dds exporting as in previous games, however this year the jersey base color and wordmark are in separate files. This is interesting, and can even be useful to mix and match designs without having to "trim" wordmarks from another jerseys. It might make it easier to como up with original and cool ideas that are remixes of current ones. It also seems that you can just drag the "logo" files from one uniform to the other without renaming and they will just position themselves over the jersey you drag them into (as long as you delete the original ones).

There seems to be a lot more variations in clothes textures. I'm trying to see if it's still possible to use the old format from previous games. Some of the retro jerseys still retain that format, identical to the ones on 23 and 24 only with a few extra lines in the RDAT file. However jerseys with the new format seem to have a lot more files involved. More on that next...

Another good news is that, at least for the jersey_color, normal and region files you no longer need to delete the lines we used to delete in the TXTR files in previous games, which does save a lot of time...

The bad part:

I remember in 23 and 24 all you needed for a complete jersey mod was the uniform file itself (like u000phi_current_away.iff) the font file and the tweak file. I never messed with the tweak files myself, but all I had to do was renaming it and that would "copy" the numbers and letters positioning for reuse. With 25 there seems to be something else in play that just can't be edited with regular text editing (as far as I've seen so far).

My first attempt for example was using the classic 90s numbers from the Hornets in the current uniform, which is something I also did for 2K23/24. So I basically exported the font file and the tweak file from u031cha_1989, and renamed them both to u031cha_current. The numbers and letters are there, but they are WAY off in size and position, which means size and position for numbers are not just being handled by the .tweak files as they used to be in previous games. I'm trying to find which file is throwing everything out of wack, but, in short, this time around there seem to be A LOT more files involved for just one uniform, and I'm still not clear on which ones those are...

Anyway. Has any of you guys been messing around with uniforms too? would love to know if anyone made any discoveries...

The lack of jersey mods for 25 kinda tells me eveybody's still struggling with the new format as I am :(

Jerseys from earlier versions can be dropped straight in (you can see that by looking at some retro ones) but like you say the tweak files are now completely different and also they seem to be only used with the original uni.
Instead of being text they are now hex and no-one seems to have worked it out yet, though someone on discord says they will have news soon.
I'm guessing the file name is in the tweakable somewhere, similar to the customshoedata
