Gaming Laptop for modding 2k20

Postby thedylanceltics on Mon Apr 27, 2020 8:55 pm

I am looking to buy a gaming laptop that can handle running NBA 2k20 with mods. I am not really knowledgeable about gaming outside of consoles so I am trying to find some options that can run the game very well. If anyone has any examples of laptops that work well for them or if they know of any that would be good I would appreciate it if you could let me know. Thanks

A laptop going to run you 1k plus for a good one to run 2k... Most people going to say it will cost 1000 regardless but it may be a bit cheaper than a laptop.. only because you can build a gaming PC. If you thinking that you will get everything you need for at most $500? Maybe not going to happen...

I bought mine new for like 700 dollars a year ago and the game runs at a steady 60fps at high settings with lots of mods. A lot depends on how you set up your machine. Also my temps are around 65 celcius without any cooling :) constantly. I find 2k games to be around the best optimized games around.

Get a good GPU and at least 16GB RAM. Some mods have 4k textures and may affect game play, at least for me it does. You can mess with video settings in the game and on the CPU.

I have an asus TUF that I got of Amazon for 650 and it runs nba 2k 20 with mods on max settings really well. The ram is 8 GB but you can upgrade it if you want more and you will still be below 1k.

DON'T BUY A LAPTOP! They're not worth it. Build a desktop instead.

For people like me (before the quarantine at least), we like to game, but also travel a lot, so we need a machine that can game while abroad. Both have their own set of advantages and disadvantages that OP will have considered.

Folks, would you recommend option 1 or option 2 for ultra gaming experience in desktop PC ?

Objective is to be able to play at highest modded performance for at least to the next 3 - 4 instalments of NBA2K.

Option 1: Ryzen 7 3700X + RTX 2070 Super
Option 2: Ryzen 7 3700X + RX 5700 XT

Can't afford RTX 2080 GPU

I have option 2 in desktop form

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpower ... Id=6362428

It runs all my games on ultra, and I can run NBA 2K20 in 4k on ultra as well (staying at 60fps consistently, I have it plugged into a tv)

Ryzen 7s are great, and the 5700xt is a really good card.

not much of PC person myself, so purely depending on experienced PC and 2K users like yourself.

not asking you to predict the future, but what is your opinion (by looking at the trend of previous 2K instalments): would you say with your specs (Ryzen 7 3700X + 5700XT), you be think you be able to run the next three 2K instalments (2K21, 2K22 & 2K23) at optimal level?

i guess i would hate it to spend that much but only be able to run 2K21 but not 2K22 (for example).

I have no idea, and have no way of predicting that, but I like my chances after seeing the PS5 spec sheet.

Remember though, it's tough running these games on laptops because of overheating. If you have room for a desktop setup, I recommend it. I have my desktop in my living room hooked up to a 50 inch tv via HDMI, and I play using an xbox one wireless controller.

I understand and thank you for replying (Y) I was also bench-marking my next build based on PS5.

Yes, definitely it will be a desktop due to pricing factor too. I think I've hijacked this thread from the OP (who wanted a gaming laptop). Didn't want to have to create a new thread as it has a very similar topic.

I just wanna know graphics wise not just for 2k but games period which do you think is better between GeForce GT 1030 2GB graphics card or Radeon RX 580 4GB graphics card

The 580 is several levels above the 1030.

Well if you can run one next gen title, then you will be good for the whole next gen. I bought my last PC setup in 2013 and was able to play every 2k from then until today on Full HD and .max settings

Now with my new setup (Ryzen 7 3600x and RTX 2070 super) I can run 2k easily on 4k and max settings while being heavily modded. For next gen I will have to see how it works... Maybe I have to decrease the resolution a little bit.

edit: just researched a little bit: A german hardware magazine tried to compare the released hardware specifications of the PS5 to current PC hardware and they concluded that you would need a Ryzen 3600 and a RTX 2060 Super or a AMD RX 5700 to get comparable performance.

After reading upon reading on reddit and discussing with enthusiasts, I don't think you need to decrease any resolution for 2K21. I suspect with your specs, you are currently on the 'overkill specs' for 2K20.

Yeah I agree; from black on white perspective (cores and threads) Ryzen 5 3600 and (from my understanding) RTX 2070 Super needed to get comparable performance. But in saying that, we know that games on consoles will always get the optimisation so hard to get apple-to-apple comparison.
