Talk about NBA 2K18 here.

I'm about to start a myleague series, and I'm pretty dedicated to the idea of playing every single game, but there's just NO WAY I can play 82 game seasons. I hate simming thru some games because I feel like the sims just don't maintain my plan for my team.
I was thinking about trying a 29 or 59 (or whatever the numbers are) game season, and maybe cutting the playoff series down to 5 games.
Is there any good reason not to do this? Will players still progress reasonably? Will it mess up stats or anything? Anything else I should look out for?

Aside from players obviously not having a number out of 82 games played, I don't believe there's any noteworthy difference or major drawback.

I'm a stats guy I'm a way, so it wouldn't work for me.
I'd have to do 82 games with 12 minute quarters. Just because I would want to compare totals with real life counterparts, or just with real life in general.
But If you don't care about that, no drawback at all.

Same here, though that does mean I have to consider simulating more these days. Either that or using the stats adjustment option for shorter quarter lengths, but I might be too much of a sim geek for that as well, so simming is probably the preferable option for me.

The only thing I can think of is cumulative fatigue. If you play a shorter season, it doesn't run for less months, the games are just more spread out over the same period of time. That means that over the course of the season, players aren't playing games as frequently so they may not be effected by long-term fatigue in the same way as they are during a 82 game season.

I've always wondered how this works. I don't really notice it with a 29 game season. Always told myself I don't have time for an 82 game season. I like to play close to real life stats as well. However, I play with a higher game speed 75-80 but play on 8 min quarters. I can usually score 90-105/game. I play myleague with Celtics. So, I might be performing at 5-8ppg less than the real life celtics do, but I am okay with that. I just figure that playing 8 min quarters vs 12 min quarters allows me to play another 1/2 season during that same time period.
