Pre-Calculus help

Postby XtrangHero on Tue Feb 04, 2014 11:16 pm

hey guys! i really need help... i can't believe that pre-calculus is part of my school's 4th-year HS curriculum(no senior/junior high yet, if you guys are wondering). So my Prof. gave us a homework: lim f(x) as x-> 3 = 1/x-3(no.1 of 3, i already got the other 2). By using the tabular form, it became evident that this function does not exist. What's messing my head is because my Prof. also wanted us to plot this in a cartesian plane. HOW THE HECK DO I DO THAT?? :|

If anyone has an idea on how to plot this, please show me how(and please no trashtalk or stuff like that). Thank you very much :D

You just plot the values you have on the graph as x approaches 3 but when x reaches exactly 3 it becomes indeterminate so the line just continues straight until you run out of graphing paper to write on.

If you want your graph to be accurate you use more increments in values for x as it approaches 3, probably in 0.4 or 0.5 increments, tabulating something like...
Function as x approaches 0
Function as x approaches 0.5
Function as x approaches 1
Function x approaches 1.5
And so on until you reach 2.5
Just plot the values you have on the graph and since x approaching exactly 3 is indeterminate you just continue a straight line as mentioned above.

If you have OCD and want a balanced line graph you can also tabulate negative values like as x approaches -0.5, as x approaches -1.0, and so on until -3.0.

Up to you on the increments you use.

Don't be confused by indeterminate shite, if you try x as it approaches 2.99999999999... you will find that it's not indeterminate yet, it only becomes indeterminate as x becomes the exact value, which in your case is 3.

Fits more to his profile, the guy who moonlights as a serial k...Barbie collector while having some unusual attributes like being good in math, cooking or history or something like that.

I didn't know that Khan was so famous that even Americans(I take a guess) recommended him. I only thought he was hugely popular in the Asian continent. Cool facts, Mr. shadowgrin. Respect.
