Personal Top Ten Video Games

Postby kevin02 on Fri Aug 02, 2013 4:50 pm

I'm pretty bored right now so I decided to create a list of my favorite games of all time. While I'm sure I edit this list a bunch of times to switch some stuff around, I was more interested to see what games I would come up with. The point of this thread is to post your favorite games of all time and not worry about trying to pick the ten, set in stone, greatest games of all time. I know the title says top ten, but obviously you can include as many games as you want. Also, since this is a personal list feel free to allow nostalgia to sway your choices as well. :D

35. The Sims 2
34. To The Moon
33. Assassin's Creed 3
32. Uncharted 3
31. Super Mario Bros. 2
30. Super Mario World
29. Assassin's Creed Revelations
28. NBA Live 10
27. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
26. Final Fantasy 7
25. Civilization Revolution
24. NBA Street Volume 3
23. Animal Crossing (GC)
22. NBA Street Volume 2
21. Tomb Raider (2013)
20. NBA Live 06
19. Fallout 3
18. Civilization 4
17. Fallout New Vegas
16. College Hoops 2k8
15. Uncharted 2
14. Metal Gear Solid
14. Civilization 5
13. Skyrim
12. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
11. Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
__________________________________________
10. The Last of Us - This is by far the most recent game on my list. While the story is clearly the strong point of the game, I also enjoyed how tense gun fights felt as well as the enemy AI.
9. Assassin's Creed 2 - Although I enjoyed the first game the 2nd much improved upon the 1st and had one of the more interesting storylines I had experienced.
8. Final Fantasy Crisis Core - Crisis Core is my 2nd favorite PSP game. The ending really touched me as I had not played FF7 at this point and therefore did not see the ending coming.
7. Uncharted - Uncharted, when I played it, was the best game as far as combing cut-scenes and gameplay I had ever expericned. I remember playing the demo over and over again until I finally convinced myself to go out and buy it.
6. Super Paper Mario - I probably rank this game much higher than most people would but I credit this game with showing me how story focused video games can be. This game is also what led me to find the Metal Gear series.
5. Metal Gear Solid 3 - This game introduced the "original snake" and had a interesting Cold War theme that was a nice change of pace for the series.
4. Metal Gear Solid 2 - MGS2 was my first Metal Gear game. Although it received criticism because Raiden was the surprise main character over Snake, I had not played the original at this point and didn't know any better. I still believe this game had the deepest story in any Video Game ever as I still struggle to fully comprehend it today.
3. Oblivion - Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game and probably the game I have put the most hours into. I believe I spent well over 500 hours on the console version. (without mods)
2. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker - Peace Walker was the first game I owned on PSP and in my opinion is one of the most impressive Metal Gear games created considering the platform it was made on.
1. Metal Gear Solid 4 - I had played Metal Gear 2 and 3 before buying 4; however, the 4th game is what made me really love the series and inspired me to play the original. Since then, Metal Gear has become my favorite game series available and I am highly anticipating the release of MGS5.

i love lists so i should love a topic about them then right? i am going to give my top ten but i always like to state that when i make this list i consider how much fun i had at the time of playing the game. some games just dont hold up.

1. legend of zelda (original). i can still go back and play this game. in fact i tend to play it once a year still. just love it
2. diablo 2. i cant play it anymore at all but i spent an insane amount of time on this game
3. baseball stars. i still play this from time to time. this is easily my favorite sports game ever
4. grand theft auto vice city. i could just lump all of them together here since i do further down the list but i wont. this was the best of the series (until sept 17th!) imo
5. kingpin. most of you are probably going "wtf" but i loved this game. it was the multiplayer that made it so memorable for me. to date it has been my best multiplayer experience
6. morrowind. cant really go back and play it today without heavy modding but back then this was like the greatest game ever. again count really count them all
7. tecmo superbowl
8. sim city (first 4). bit of a cheat here but i played the hell out of the first 4
9. baldurs gate (1-2) again cheating but whatever its my list.
10. World of warcraft. this makes the list simply cause of how much time i spent playing it. it probably should be higher as i have more hours on this game than anything else by a very wide margain

If you consider sequels one gaming experience as it continues and improves the first one, then it should only count as one. Other than SMB3, none of these are in order. Also we had a Video Game Hall of Fame thread a while back similar to this but fuck it, might as well update.

Super Mario Bros 3-Mario started my gaming career as I got the dualpack SMB and Duck Hunt. SMB1 was fantastic. SMB2 was weird but still solid. SMB3 took games to another level for me.

Borderlands 2-My most recent addition to this list. I hate shooters..but this one has gripped me by the balls, heart, and brain and not let go. Its so addictive, fun, and over the top that I've played through the story mode 5 times and I still love every second.

Portal/Portal 2
Best written games ever. Not to mention awesome gameplay mechanics and original setting/ambiance

Bioshock
took a tired genre and made it interesting again, with the best and most deliciously twisted world creation I've seen in a long time and possibly ever.

GTA San Andreas
All GTAs could be on here but SA is my personal favorite of the bunch.

Madden/NCAA
Football, what else? Bitch all you want about the problems with EA's games, but even if they havent changed much lately, they are quality if you just like to pick up and play with your favorite players

Worms series
Blow up all the things! Holy Hand Grenade

Capcom fighters (street Fighter, Marvel Vs Capcom)
I'm putting these together because they're basically the same engine. 2nd favorite fighters of all time

WoW
My soul was sold to it for 2.5 years ,and i enjoyed it. Cant really be negative about it.

Conkers Bad Fur Day
Vulgarity, fun, and imaginative with loads of allusions: I want more games like this

2k Sports series
NBA or NFL..2k knows what they're doing with sports games

Soul Calibur Fighting series
Been playing these since Soul Edge in the arcade and it was probably my 2nd most played game on Dreamcast. There's really not much better than this series for me when it comes to fighters. It looks great, the characters are interesting, the engine is easy to pick up, hard to master. Perfect storm for fighters to just be fun as hell. Nothing better than having a few friends and just cycling through characters and seeing what happens

Sonic 2
The game that took the speed of sonic and made it an institution. Almost solely responsible for my desire for a Sega Genesis

TMNT 2
My first beat-em up, Nostalgia heavy yes but my god nothing was better than this as a kid.

Double Dragon 2
My 2nd beat-em up, CYCLONE KICK TIME BITCHES

Shenmue
This middle ground between Japanese Anime and life simulator fascinated me with its sheer amount of detail. While many games have done it since, this one was the first I had seen and I loved it for it.

Legend of Zelda (original)
A friend of my sister's drew me a map of the entire game on graph paper. It was insanely accurate. And the only way I ever beat it.

Perfect Dark
My favorite multiplayer kill each other shooter. I dont know why this one was so much fun to me but it was. Moreso than Goldeneye, COD, Halo,or the bevy of others

Streets of Rage/Golden Axe
Genesis-era beat em ups with a special place in my heart

Donkey Kong Country
Gave DK a revival and brought platformers to new levels of difficulty, and graphical beauty

Wii Sports
Say what you will about waggling controllers, but wii sports is one of the best things to happen to awkward parties ever. Ive spent wayy to much time bowling.

Guitar Hero/Rock Band
Having no musical talent, these rhythm games trick my brain into thinking I'm a rock star. Yes please. Too bad my guitar is broken. Got any to spare Jao?

Tony Hawk Pro Skater
It fell off after the PS series but the original 4 Tony Hawks were pure gold for hardcore and casual skate fans alike. Humor, music, and awesome, challenging but not impossible, gameplay makes this series pure money.

Fallout 3/New Vegas
No game absorbs me like this one and hence why I dont play it often. I spend 40 hours over the course of three days and feel like I barely played.

Saints Row The Third
One of few sandbox games i've gone back too, its just fun as hell. Nothing more can be said

Plants vs Zombies
The best tower defense I've ever played period. Hundreds of hours logged, none of which counted by steam because I'd play offline at my ex's house. Suffice it to say I'm pissed PvZ2 is starting iOS only

Batman Arkham Series
You are fucking batman and it feels right. The first game is a little clunky compared to City, but it laid the groundwork for one of my best gaming experiences lately. If you like comics at all and havent played this, stop jerking off to Jubilee, go to the store, buy these games, and play them now.

A fun idea for a topic as always, but a difficult list to compile off the top of your head. As Oz mentioned, it's difficult to whittle it down to ten when you've got series with multiple games and some standout sequels that could take two or three spots in the list. Throw in the sports games that have yearly iterations and the standout favourites among those make it even more difficult.

I'll refrain from putting these in any order for the moment, since they're off the top of my head and it's likely that if you asked me on a different day, I might swap a couple of them out for other titles or rank them slightly differently. However, for my all-time, top ten games as of right now, I'll say: NBA 2K13, NBA Live 06, NBA Jam (either Tournament Edition or On Fire Edition), WWF No Mercy, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Grand Theft Auto III, Super Mario Bros 3, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas and Donkey Kong Country 2 (though some days it's a toss up with 3).

Those are definitely ten of my favourites and games that I find I can go back to again and again, despite how much time I've spent playing them over the years. Some tough omissions there including an assortment of adventure games, but you do have to wait a bit longer in between playthroughs of those. On some days, one of my favourite Mortal Kombat games might crack the list as well.

As for my ten favourite series: NBA Live, NBA 2K, NBA Jam, WWF/E (THQ era), Fallout, Legend of Zelda, Grand Theft Auto, Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry and Mortal Kombat.

It's definitely one of the things that I've missed after moving away from Nintendo after the N64.

Seems like I have a bit in common with Oz. Super Mario Bros. 3 will always be #1 for me. I could play that game over and over again, and I can't say that about too many games released in the last 10 years. I love side scroller beat em up games like DD2 & TMNT
and Oz if you like Shenmue you'd probably like the Yakuza series on PS2/3.

Doing this without looking at the aforementioned Hall of Fame thread, should be interesting to compare.

Sorted by approximate date of release;

Super Mario World - First game I owned, still played on my tablet/Wii
WWF No Mercy - Still playable today, great balance, gameplay, etc.
The Sims 1 - Way, way, waaaaay too many hours of my life in this. First real experience with PC gaming and mods
NBA Street 1 - Helped cement my interest in basketball, still enjoyed today
Amplitude - Music crack. Love everything about this game, and my first online game
Burnout 2 - Damage in racing games was all i ever needed/wanted, somewhat realistic, crash mode is local multi amazingness
Flatout 1 - Continuation of above when I didn't get as into Burnout 3's aftertouch from crashes. Ragdoll Olympics for replayability
Battlefield 2 - The real online multiplayer addiction for me, played for years and years.
Minecraft - Survival exploration, boom
Rock Band 3 - Music crack with plastic instruments

I also feel the need to mention these, which I did hold out of the top 10

Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey - 2 games were played with local multiplayer on my N64, Goldeneye, then this. OMFG fun
Tony Hawk Pro Skater - Here I am...
Goldeneye - Pushed out for BF2 since I rarely touched it without the local multi
Tiger Woods 2004 - Still played today, love everything about the soundtrack, golf gameplay perfection with the mix of arcade in it
GTA IV - Euphoria > Story
Trials Evolution - Much better than HD, just one more time gameplay, always room for improvement aside from its simple gameplay
Backbreaker - Euphoria FOOTBAWL, balancing and AI issues through
NBA Live 2K - I can't pick one. Unfortunately every game in this series has some "major" flaw that prevents me from having it be an all-time game for me. From watered down blacktop modes, to terrible glitches, control issues, gamebreaking official patches, or glaring AI issues...i dunno, none of my other games are "perfect", but since I get new games each year I do hold it to a different standard.
IF I had to pick one from each series...
NBA Live 2004 - EA glitch and skating are my only issues. NCAA draft classes and IMO the best dynasty mode for an EA game...I mean modding wise I look back at Live 07 of all games in the best light, but yea...
NBA 2K13 - 2K just ruins the year previous with each iteration of the game, which is good, but its still not perfect with no VC on PC, iffy blacktop, meh official customization options, and a few other more minor grievances.

Looking at the HoF thread;
Tobal No 1 - playing it recently has left a bad taste in my mouth, still my favorite fighting game though
Bushido Blade - sameish
March Madness 2003 - I've grown up a bit too much for this "simulation" gem
Top Gear - eh too old, just memories
RallyCross - infuriating little shit of a game (PS1 emulator on tablet)
Opinions are my own.

Just realised that I left out Sid Meier's Pirates. See, that's why you shouldn't compile these lists off the top of your head.

These threads are always fun. I'd probably go with:

Twisted Metal 2 - I've played thousands of splitscreen matches in this game over the years, and it still holds up for me.

Tony Hawk (series) - I still love these games - creating parks used to be my favorite thing ever.

NBA 2K (series) - Far from perfect and frustrating at times, 2K is still crack for basketball nerds.

Gran Turismo 2 - Tempted to put the whole series, but GT2 is my favorite with probably more content than any other PS1 game and fewer laps in races than in later titles.

Tekken (series) - Tekken Tag 2 is the go-to fighting game in my house, and since Tekken 3, a staple with its memorable characters and accessible gameplay.

Soul Calibur (series) - The series really hasn't made much progress since Soul Calibur 1 on the Dreamcast, but I had the most fun with 2 and 3. SC2 might be my favorite fighter ever.

Grand Theft Auto (series) - Saint's Row is a lot of fun, but only by being a GTA clone. While 4 was a step back from a pure fun factor standpoint, every GTA since III has been a gaming event.

Resident Evil (series) - The RE games of this generation haven't been very good, but there have certainly been a lot of them. I was obsessed with RE4 and the earlier games when I was a kid though.

Burnout 3 - Best arcade racer ever in my book.

Fallout New Vegas - Clocked so many hours in this game. Fallout 3 was great, but the choice system and hardcore mode kept me coming back to New Vegas. I still intend on beating the DLC's.

Definitely do it. The vanilla game is awesome, don't get me wrong, but the DLCs added at least another game's worth of content in my estimation. I've probably said it before but play them in the order they were released (Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and finally Lonesome Road), for the best storytelling experience as far as Ulysses and the Courier's backstory are concerned.

I updated my list with descriptions for the top ten as well as some games I missed. I can't believe I missed both Fallout and Civilization considering the amount of hours I've put into those games. As I'm typing this I already remembering more games I could add.

I loved the Civ games. I spent so much time on Civs 2 & 3.

Yoshi's Island is also one of my favorites. It was such an innovative spin on the traditional Mario game, so fresh. plus those mini games were awesome!!

Some very nice posts here.

The first game I ever played was FIFA 98. At that time around, I also played games like Road Rash 2, The Punisher(1993), Mortal Kombat II etc.

I've played all games the EA football games, from FIFA 98 to FIFA 12. But then I tried out PES 2012 and totally got hooked and dumped FIFA. It was just so revolutionary. And I'm sad that because of the lack of promotion, PES is very less popular compared to FIFA. But PES is just so much better, only if more people knew.

This might be a long list. And much like Andrew, I'm likely to forget some here. Note that I've played all these games on PC. But it's not like I've only played on PC. I play on my friends PS3 whenever I'm over at his place.

So, my list:

FIFA 2002 World Cup, FIFA 2003, FIFA 08, FIFA 11/PES 2013, PES 2013

The whole NFS series. But especially Most Wanted(2004, 2012), Carbon, Hot Pursuit(2010), The Run

Cricket 2002

Age of Empire II, Age of Mythology

The whole Commandos series only except the last one where they made it first person.

Company of Heroes I & II.

Darksiders II.

Far Cry 3.

Mafia II.

Telltale's The Walking Dead.

X-Men Legends II.

World In Conflict.

Civilization V.

NBA 2K Series.

GTA Series.

COD Series except the fifth installment iirc where they went back to WWII again. Probably my most favorite of this genre.

Assassins Creed Series.

WWE RAW 2.

Batman Arkham Series.

Sims Series.

Battlefield Series.

Doom 2 :D

Max Payne Series.

Silent Hunter 3.

Left 4 Dead Series.

Skyrim.

Half Life Series.

System Shock 2.

That's pretty much what I can remember for now. I won't be surprised if I messed up some names here and there.

In no particular order..... I play a wide variety of different genres and I have not played a lot of big name titles that have come out recently.

Chrono Trigger - Best RPG with an amazing combat system and branching story with multiple endings
Final Fantasy 6 - Same as above. I loved the individuality and skill set of the characters. Mog is best Moogle.
Fallout New Vegas - I have never played Fallout 3 but I've played New Vegas and I simply love the atmosphere of the game. Some of the characters in that game are immensely satisfying to talk to or interact with.
NBA Live 2005 - They finally fixed that stupid hop step cheese and they did a pretty significant overhaul of the graphics if I remember correctly. I also first started writing dynasty stories with this addition of the series which makes it extra special.
Super Smash Bros Melee - Just a good time with friends and I love their unique knock out system.
Counter-Strike 1.6 - One of the first FPS's I've played and has that blend of skill and tactics that a lot of shooters have tried to replicate but have never really gotten right.
Day of Defeat 1.3 - The most fun FPS I've played simply because it's the one that I've gotten the best at. I really like the immense gun recoil and accuracy mechanics and it makes the weapons feel very satisfying to frag with. There's still a competitive scene that I spend my Sunday nights playing in!
Command and Conquer Generals - A really underrated addition to the CnC series. While the base building is completely different from the others in the series, I thought the game was pretty well balanced and the feel of the 3 factions were really unique.
Age of Empires 2 - Just the best RTS ever made.
StarCraft - Uhhhh actually take the above comment back. This might be the best RTS ever made... Although I never played the actual RTS portion of it, the custom maps was such a mind blowing thing at the time and some of the custom games were designed really well considering the limited resources of the editor at that time.

Deus Ex. I have played this through three times and have been itching to do it again, but I would love to have it remade with modern tech. RPG-FPS mix with elements of stealth or assault while augmenting your character somewhat open world maps with a dystopian future based on conspiracy theories. Different dialog choices affect the outcome of quests and multiple endings based on how you finish the game and not just a choice of buttons to push(See Deus Ex: Human Revolution).

Fallout 3/New Vegas. Much like Deus Ex, an RPG/FPS mix in a dystopian future with a variety of ways to play the game that branch the story in different ways with perks that provide similar enhancements that Deus Ex's augmentations did. The replay-ability and variable outcomes and pure randomness make this game a top ten.

Counter Strike: Source. I got pretty good at this game for a few months. I found it to be very fun and played on a certain server for a while.

Arma 2: Dayz Mod. I started playing in June/July of last year. It consumed most of my days as I came home from work and started it up. A very glitchy mod, but the fact that you could decide how you wanted to survive became a draw to me. I went from a lone survivor, to joining a clan/group that had a couple of private servers and we created our own missions whether it was to stock up vehicles and aircraft or raid or snipe towns, recruit friendlies, or assault known enemies, it was a blast until it died off and everybody moved on to something else.

NBA 2K7. First 360 2K experience since playing my buddies dreamcast years before, and I was loving it. It took some getting used to, but even after buying it the summer before 2K8 came out, I was 3 years deep in my association and had some connection with the generic draftees that I had built into solid role players. That association depth, the variety of animations, presentation, and 24/7 mode made me a day one 2K customer to this day. I made a mistake when I traded it in instead of 2K8.

California Games which came after Winter games and Summer games for the Apple 2, Commodore 64, adn eventually the NES. Half pipe skating, freestyle footbag (hacky sack), surfing, skating, BMX, "flying disk" or frisbee, the game had a load of content and was very fun for it's time with extra content like a shark popping out while a mock up JAWS theme played during surfing, an earthquake during the half pipe where the "H" in hollywood would fall off, an alien abduction during the flying disk event or hit the flying seagull in footbag for extra points.

Half Life/Series. Innovative FPS and story that changed the genre. Add on expansions offering different perspectives, and an incredible amount of dedication and updates to the game by the developers and community make this a must play for anyone who hasn't. It was pretty much my initiation into liking FPS games, even though I played Wolfenstein 3D and Doom before it.

GTA Vice City. I liked GTA 3, loved GTA: San Andreas, played the heck out of GTA IV, but the Vice City theme, soundtrack, and city I just loved. Driving around causing havoc and doing side missions with all the mods and NPC personalities made this a favorite that I played through a few times.

MVP Baseball 2005. Probably the best PC baseball game ever made, but it's kind of a toss up with one of the High Heat games. It did everything well. It was very balanced from hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running. Had an Owner mode where you make money and build up your stadium and manage the vendors to try to get more revenue. Big modding community that I was proud to make a small impact on. 2K-like variety of signature batting and pitching animations. It's probably not better than MLB: The Show, but I don't own a PS3 and never played it.

Sorry NBA Live, but the community and my own NBA, basketball, and video game interest is what drives me to play the series.

I'm only putting 9, because there are probably 100 game that deserve a spot in there, including games that have yet to be released.

1) Super Mario Bros 3 - A game for the ages...

2) Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - I born in place where the ball can't be handle by any other part of your body then your foot.

3) NBA 2K12 - A MUST HAVE GAME, here i finally found Peace in having all i ever imagine in a single basketball game.

4) Super Monaco GP - Ayrton Senna drove my mind even before he drove his Red'nd Wihte McLaren... Even knowing he only appears at SMGP 2, the first game is magical, it remembers my old Mega Drive (SEGA Gennesis).

5) NBA Live 2004 - You can edit anything, i mean anything. Love the pace of the game, even back then, it was so "Fast and Furious"!

6) NBA Live 2000 / NBA 2K11 - MJ IS BACK! Period.

7) Sim City - RGI for everybody... Great game.

8) GOAL - First game of soccer that made the WC finals a one time life experience to me.

9) FIFA Soccer - For all soccer lovers. EA Always jumping ahead, but as time pass by Konami made the same as 2K Sports did in Basketball and stole the ball from Eletronic Arts, but i'll Always be a fan of them (EA).

10) Teenage Ninja Turtle 2 and International Super Star Soccer Deluxe - The very last ones, but not least.

I can list a hundred for sure, but i have a honor mension for Sonic, Tetris, Gran Prix 4, Mega Man X, Gran Turismo 4, Flashback, Joe Montana's Football, Ninja Shinobi, Fifa 98 WC, NHL Series, Mortal Kombat (Finish Him!) and Street Fighter (Oh, i dare to make a Shoryukken again!) Heheheheh (Y)

This is true. Perhaps after we've done those, I'll take another shot at an overall top ten.
