Hard Drive ??

Sun Mar 31, 2013 9:05 pm

Hello NLSC

Got a question about capacity on hard drives, and im not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to CPUs so any help/suggestions would be great

My CPUs HDD has a total capacity of 465 GB and i just noticed im now at 41.9 GB

Do i need to immediately stop downloading anything else? Is there a number you should avoid letting your system get too?

And what can i do to add capacity? Should i purchase an external hard drive? Or should i upgrade my internal one? I would also like to know what i am looking at money wise

Again be easy on me, as i am still learning about CPUs :D Any suggestions would be helpful, Thanks guys (Y)

Generally Windows doesn't mind until you get down to like 1% of capacity. Then it might start suggesting you clean stuff out. 42 out of 465 is still small enough you can nearly run a defrag!

You can probably add both an external or internal. Since you're not too knowledgeable I would probably suggest you get an USB external to store your music/movies/tv shows/etc. on and leave the internal for games and programs. Price can really depend on when you buy it. Check out newegg.com just to get a general sense of prices, you can sometimes get a great deal many places if you check regularly. Just going there for example I see a 1TB (1024 GB) external for $90 being advertised on the front page.

Try this as well: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Uncheck the cookies and passwords and stuff (except the cache) for your browser in ccleaner. You'll want to save those.

Sometimes a defrag can free up space as well because of the way clusters work. Wouldn't hurt to run one of those. You can use the one that comes with Windows or Auslogics or Defraggler are okay. (You can grab both off filehippo.)

Use this to figure out just what is taking up all that space: http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/

And delete/uninstall stuff you don't need!

Besides the general Windows maintenance mentioned above, which should certainly help free up some space, I would agree that an external drive is probably the easiest solution here. They're fairly inexpensive these days.

I recently purchased 3 terrabytes hd for back up purpose and it only cost me $110. Worth every penny because it saved my porns. Only complaint is that it took me about 16 hours to complete the transfer.

USB drive? USB IS slow but you get the advantage of being able to plug that shit into everywhere. For example I got a $30 DVD player with a USB port on the front, hook that shit up by HDMI and just unplug the USB external from PC and plug in there and bam, play it on the TV no prob.

Poor mans media center unlocked. (XBMC on legit Xbox was prior solution. So I sorta came up in the world. DVD player had a remote!)

Plus I can just take the drive with and plug into laptop and get access to plenty of "essential" files. :cheeky:

You have an extensive collection, I suppose.

Before you go off buying a new drive, using a tool like SpaceMonger to make sure you're not wasting your space on crap and running CCleaner once could prove handy.

By the way, USB 3.0 drivers are not slow at all. I got a 16GB stick with just 13 euros to try the USB3.0 ports on the MoBo I bought last summer, got 60MB/s read and 40MB/s write. And depending on the brand, you can get pretty amazing speeds.

You also need top go through your old downloads and clear out crap you don't need like old drivers and anything you haven't touched in a few months. If you see some old files you think you might want to keep, burn it to a disk if you have a burner, our else an external drive is perfect. You might want a special drive that you can encrypt just in case you meet your demise and don't have a trusted buddy to clear that stuff out for you.

16 hrs?? Yea that's quite a bit of time! But in the end, im sure its all worth it. Just to have peace of mind, that if something goes wrong.. bam there's your backup intact! Gotta be an awesome feeling to have all them vids intact LOL. everything for that matter!!

And 3 TBs for 110 $$ ONLY??? Wow..

I was at target and i saw 2 TB for 120$$

Smart Pdub..

Last thing i need is someone going thru my shit after i've met my maker. So if i purchase an external HD, it will give me the option to lock it from others??

Also thanks Benji!! appreciate the help (Y) (Y)

Sounds like an external HD is the route im taking after i've gone thru maintenance on my system.

Im not trying to let my system get to 5 GB before i react. Space gets taken up sneaky quick!! lol
