"Make sure to get a good night's rest"

Postby Leftos on Sun Mar 31, 2013 9:01 pm

It's the most commonly used (and yes, very useful) catch-all tip for anything important the next day. "Make sure to get a good night's rest." A lot of the time it's much easier said than done. So, when you know you have to rest because of something very important the next day, what's your trick for making sure you get some good shut-eye?

My usual trick is to get 8tracks up and choose any popular playlist tagged with "sleep". Usually does the trick. A warm shower could also help untense, although I can't seem to clear my head during the thing so its effects are nerfed by the hypertension.

Haven't touched any drugs/pills/whatever, nor am I that willing to do so. If you have some verified, safe choices, feel free to mention them.

So, what's your trick/ritual?

Spending the money on a 12" thick.....

....memory foam mattress.....sick fucks.

And finding a good $10 pillow rather than fussing with whatever you have. That did it for me and my restless nights. So basically, don't be afraid to spend a bit to help with getting good night sleeps, definitely worth it IMO.

The biggest issue I have is actually falling asleep though. Turning off your brain, quit thinking so much, etc. The baby has helped with that....so, have a baby?
Opinions are my own.

As much as I hated my previous job, I always managed to at least have a decent night sleep when I was working. Having to get to work at 6am makes you a bit of a lightweight when it comes to staying up.

Now I'm studying and doing nothing else, my sleeping pattern is pretty fucked. I've tried different things to get to sleep at normal times (chamomile tea, valerian, benadryl), but most make me sleep for two or so hours. I think the best remedy is to just have that one day where you don't sleep as much and stay up through it and try to reset the pattern. But normally I'll just crash on the couch for a few hours and stuff that plan up.

So I guess I can't really offer any insight, as I'm looking for a better solution myself.

Making judicious use of my bong, or reading something from Kant.
Either way, I usually don't have any issue falling asleep, but I just can't stay asleep for more than 4 hours or so, and it's been getting worse lately.

Since you were being serious, working out is a good way to ensure a good night sleep...but that is usually only better when you know exactly how your body/mind will be tired....nothing to just do as a once off since it could make you groggy.

I learned in my Anatomy and Physiology class that sleeping and waking up on the exact time every day is the key to getting proper sleep. The brain is very good at getting accustomed to patterns and if you put it to sleep at the same time every night then it becomes very efficient in the way it takes care of your body's resting and recuperating needs while asleep.

It doesnt matter if you sleep 7 hours each night. You have to go to sleep and wake up on the exact fixed times each day. The amount of hours you want is for you to decide. Usually around 6-8 hours should be more than enough if you are following the strict schedule.

Side note- You can train your brain to initiate a deep sleep faster by taking 30 minute naps every 4 hours or so. This will get you to to sleep shorter hours but get better rest and live longer days where you are awake.

I think if we all paid attention to our brain and bodies rather than forcing them to sleep and wake at certain times we would notice something different about our sleep patterns. Getting up later every day, by an hour or two seems to be the natural sleep cycle for humans, including a small period of wakefulness of about 2 hours in the middle of our sleep schedule.

Anyways, my trick/ritual is to remove as much light as possible from entering the room, have a slightly warm temperature and find a comfortable position and stop thinking for as long as possible.

Dc311, pffft, that's obvious. It's as if saying "Have a girlfriend? Fuck her to exhaustion." I was looking for stuff that's not as obvious as "rub one out". Let me tell you, there are times where I get so hypertensive that even that doesn't work.

then maybe working out is the solution, get down and do as many pushups as you can until you pass out on the floor, drag your ass to the bed and pass out

or treadmills, jumping jacks, etc.

Don't have your laptop/tablet, etc. in your bedroom. Don't even watch TV in there. Make your bedroom the place where you sleep, not the place where you do a bunch of things in addition to sleep. That way when you go in there, there is no option of logging on, checking this, coding that, etc. The only option is... sleep.

Good luck!
