Does anyone have Back problems around here?

Postby bowdown on Sun Jul 22, 2012 2:42 am

I have had spondylolisthesis for around 2 years. It is when the L5 vertebra slips slightly over the S1 vertebra. I am wondering if anyone else here has something similar and if so what type of treatments you have tried. Have u seen progress?

I just turned 21....Weightlifting is pretty dangerous for young guys...I am such a good athlete at 6'4 185lbs and in good physical condition but I am afraid my back problem will severely limit me enjoying a physically active life. I am hoping for some good news as I visit my physical therapist next week and also meet with a chiropractor.

Don't lift really heavy weights period... Do basic strength exercises such as pushups and other calisthenics for upper and lower body but don't try to go power-lifter mode. It is not worth it... Even if you're the person who practices proper form and technique you are still risking yourself a lot. You do so many countless reps and it will only take one bad moment to compromise your long term health.

My doctor also noticed the spaces between my vertebra had deteriorated..that is because of all the pressure Squats put on ur back

Steve Nash has the same problem as me (spondylolisthesis) so I am hoping that I can cope with it just like he has (but he has the benefit of having team trainers look after him all the time).

This is my advice for young guys. I know you want to get big and beefy because you want to be a bad ass. But that is a fallacy of our society. Being big and muscular does not mean you are a better fighter or more of a bad-ass. Either you are a weak bitch or you are a physically capable person who can hold his own in a fight regardless of how skinny or hefty you look. Lifting weights and gaining mass will not help you be a better fighter so dont risk your structural integrity trying to get that "bad-ass" look.

Just strive to live a healthy life doing moderate strength excercise and play sports like basketball or any other sport that does not involve taking physical abuse like American football or ice hockey. Once you lose proper functioning in an important part of your body (most of which are) then you will realize how much losing your structural well being was worth it. Most of us play recreationally and putting yourself through that much physical strain is too much risk for reward.

Army men do a lot of non weight room exercises and they are quite physically capable as we know. Do those types of exercises and you will live a much better physically fit life instead of walking around like a big bulky stiff who only looks like a tough guy but probably cant fight for shit.

I had back pain for a while after lifting a wood pallet. Then one day I tried to lift two plastic pallets over my head, lost my balance for a second, my back popped and I haven't had pain since. Maybe I slipped something back in, I don't know.

I don't have back problems really, but I did injure my back a month ago after landing on the ground awkwardly scaling a very high fence. Now I know why T-Mac regressed so badly after so many back injuries. You are just so miserable and in pain 24/7. I wake up in the morning and my back still caves in on me every now and then.... I should probably get it checked out.

Yeah you definitely should. Do you not have insurance or something? You very likely have a structural problem in your back and get it fixed ASAP before you keep doing things to make it worse.

Ever since my growth spurt, I had problems, couldn't really do much physical labor for a long time, lifting etc.. A year ago got a job though, which did include lifting 60-lbs bags of flour among other heavy stuff, lots of it. After the first week, the back was killing me, I couldn't really lift anything without serious pain in my lower back.

But as the weeks progressed, the pain went away and soon it arrived at a point where I am now, that it doesn't bother me anymore. I hadn't felt anything for almost half a year til about a month ago, one day at work the back got very stiff, different sort of discomfort then I used to have, but that only bothered me for 2 days at work, weekends are free so didn't put any pressure on my back and by Monday, it was fine.

But yeah, being 6'6' and ~180 lbs, it may still present itself someday...

Lifting properly? You can bend over at the waist and lift something 600 times before you actually feel pain in your back.
