Liking and Disliking YouTube Videos

Sun May 20, 2012 11:09 am

Bit of a random topic here, but that's what General Talk is for after all.

As most people are probably aware, the number of Likes and Dislikes on YouTube videos are far lower than the total number of views they receive, with few (if indeed any) exceptions. Presumably the 1% rule is in effect here, on top of a decent amount of viewers shunning the new rating system due to preference for the old five star rating system, not having YouTube accounts or being logged in to rate a video at the time they watch it, or watching a video embedded on another site.

So...what moves you to Like or Dislike a video on YouTube?

it has to be something i want to find later for me to like it. Otherwise i just move on and dont really worry about it

to dislike: bieber or Ke$ha.

Yeah if it is something I would like to watch later.....like a long time in the future. I may look back at my Like history and find something nice I saw earlier which would be great to watch again.

If it is something that promotes my political views then I also like it.

Sometimes I dont even remember to Like a video even if it is really good...

You know when they had the 5 star rating system...I would either rate a video 5 stars, or 1 star...depending on if Liked it or it was totally horrible...
I would never bother with 3s or 4s..

Sounds similar to my approach. I'll generally Like a video if I think I'm likely to want to look it up again quickly, though I also like to show appreciation for anything I find particularly enjoyable. A basketball highlight I really thought was special, a classic clip from a TV or movie show, original content that is quite well-made, that kind of stuff. I tend not to bother Dislking videos, I'll just move on to another video or whatever else I'm doing. It has to be pretty bad or in some way inaccurate/fraudulent for me to be moved to Dislike it.

I do like what the denizens of YouTube have done with this Futurama clip though:

phpBB [video]

As of this post it has 48,543 likes and 48,543 dislikes, for a neutral response. It's cool to see everyone pick up on the gag and run with it. (Y)

same as everyone else, I use likes to find a video again, but only when I don't want to favorite it. Rarely, I will like a video that is completely awesome.

Dislikes are reserved for videos with issues, like crappy framerates, really loud volume, and, for some, really stupid fucking opinions.

I like videos which were done masterfully, I don't hit the like button on funny videos - even if those videos made me laugh.

I also don't watch videos that I know I'll dislike. Just to save my time I guess.

Ah yes, that too. Add screamers, fakes and their ilk to that list as well, though come to think of it I haven't encountered any screamers on YouTube for a while. Either they've gone out of vogue or they're swifter in handling complaints.

I like videos I know I would watch all the way through if I ever encountered it again, I rarely like and usually never dislike. I just never really got into using them, I'd rather just leave a comment about the video in the comments...

Aside from responding to some comments/questions on videos on the NLSC's channel, I tend to avoid the comments as much as I can. I'll give a thumbs up to the occasional witty quip though.

Most YouTube comments are useless anyways.

I usually forget to "like" a video that I enjoy. I will now use it as a history like you all do. I often find myself searching for a video I watched before and can't find it without looking for a video I did watch and am able to find then I follow the recommended/related videos until the one I was looking for shows up.

There isn't a criteria for how I like or dislike videos. Fraudulent videos are obviously disliked immediately. Poor quality/bad presentations are also disliked. If it is put together well and I enjoyed the content, I like it. A lot of the times I forget to like music content.

They do have a tendency to shake your faith in humanity.

I 'Like' videos that i feel strongly that others should see (be it comedy, political or NBA, doesn't matter the topic). I 'dislike' videos i feel shouldn't be seen by anyone (whether it's because it's poorly made, or a bad influence on people, etc)

Did shadow respond to this thread? No? Let me do it for him, lol

I was about to Like this for the AI portrair at the beginning but then I saw Tony Parker ball-bashing the opponents' faces. Needs more of Tony Parker being bashed in the face with a ball. So I'm going to dislike this since you let Tony Parker do that.

The troll bike made me Like this.

Disliking this video for the Kobe hate.

Bump! Oh wait...
lol OK I don't like this haha

I'm aroused for some strange reason. Must be the pornstache and the love thumping bass of the music.

Me gusta...oh wait it's that trade whiny bitch Chris Paul, in that case...me no gusta.

2 morons disliked this video and it's not me.

When it comes to videos, I don't think I've clicked dislike once. If I find something that objectionable, then I'll just move on to another video. I will dislike comments though, because those can be really out of line. Latest one I disliked was a bible quote about homosexuality being a sin. Normally I wouldn't, but it was on a video I did for a university assignment about same-sex marriage. I could just tell that they didn't watch the whole thing and weren't willing to listen to a logical argument.

I've done that too at times, disliking comments that were particularly offensive, stupid, trollish, or trollishly offensive and stupid. Not that it does all that much in the grand scheme of things except hiding the comment if enough people feel the same way, but it offers a bit of relief when you can't resist the temptation to glance at the comments...kind of like popping bubblewrap.

I dislike videos and thumbs down comments en masse. There is something cathartic about it
