How can I get my 560 to be my primary video card

Sat Apr 07, 2012 12:12 am

My Google-Fu is weak from sleep deprivation, so help is needed.

I have 2 video cards in my computer, the surviving 8800GT from my old SLI setup and a 560 Ti. My plan is/was to use the 8800GT for physx only, but I found out that my computer was still using it as my primary card and the 560 was secondary. So last week I got a little frustrated with it and (for some reason, remember, sleep deprivation) uninstalled both cards from device manager. Then I proceeded to do my dusting and noticed a little sign thingy that said ^Primary Card - SLI Cardv so I swapped my cards around. After fighting my computer which refused to show the start up screens, I finally got it started, monitor to show up, reinstalled new drivers and yay.

After all that, with the 560 in the 1st slot and the monitor plugged into it, the 8800GT is still being shown as the primary card in nvidia inspector. So, what should I do? Is there a way I can disable the 8800GT so my computer will actually use the 560? Should I simply remove the 8800GT from the computer? If so, how do I store it without anti-static bags? I AM SO CONFUSED AND TIRED

I figure I can't relate since I am weak with only one video card.

Try to remove the 8800GT first and see if the OS detects it as 'the' video card. If it works, plug the 8800GT back.

I'm gonna guess here based on my old kung-fu...

Uninstall drivers for both.
Remove the 8800 from any slot, leave the 560 in your primary videocard slot.
Install drivers for the 560.
Quick check just to make sure it's working (identified properly, works on games, etc.)
Then place the 8800 to the secondary slot and install its drivers.
Check if your videocards are properly identified to which is primary and secondary.
If it's right, celebrate.

If that doesn't fix it, install both again not giving a fuck which videocard is in which slot.
Once you got both working again and still not giving a fuck to which is primary or secondary go back to Device Manager, select the 8800, right-click, pick Properties, Go to Driver tab, click Disable. (Vista)
Check if it's actually disabled and that the 560 is the only recognized card that is working (since the 8800 is disabled, herp derp shadow!) by playing games and doing other shite.
If the 560 is recognized as the only working videocard, winning.
If you want to use both cards enable the 8800 again in the Device Manager.

*The second one is easier.

How do you know the 560 isn't being used? Have you checked the load while playing a game?

It shouldn't even list one card as primary and one as secondary since it's no longer in SLI, should default to using the one the monitors plugged into.

You don't really need an anti-static bag you can just stick it in a box, but if you're really concerned just use a paper bag or zip-top bag. I think UPS stores have anti-static bags.

I took mine out because the PhysX boost was barely anything and in so few games it wasn't worth the extra heat and power used just from having the card in the case.

Then place the 8800 to the secondary slot and install its drivers.

They're the same drivers you dope.

Yea I've even read in certain situations using a dedicated PhysX card can actually slow down performance.

I'd scrap the 8800 from this build, you'll see little to no improvement performance wise. Less power, heat and fussle.

Check your Bios and make sure your 560 is set as the primary card.

Also this-

Last but not least, just disable the card in the device manager.

so last night I disabled the 8800GT (its GT, not GTS so that memory controller thing was not an issue) and this morning when I booted my computer, it boots fine, but nothing comes up on the monitor at all. Yes the monitor is plugged into the 560 and I did try both DVI ports.

Just remove the card.

Switch the slots? Try the bios thing?

He already switched the slots, read the OP JEEEEZ. MODS BAN THIS FOOL.

I would check the BIOS if only you might have to turn off SLI there. But still, YANK THE 8800. Just set it on the side of your case while you boot to see if the 560 works, it should be fine. Don't put the side of the case back on until things are working properly.

Maybe the 560 is dead... (or not properly inserted or not properly powered, or who knows!)

if that 560 is dead, then I have a magical 8800 which can handle BF3 and other new games on max settings.

i'll yank it out :cheeky: when I get home from work.

So, in other words, your 8800 was not in fact being used as the primary card and you've made us all stay up nights, pacing, drinking, cutting, staring, for nothing.

the issue all started because of NBA live 2004, which was not recognizing my 560 as my primary, which yes, made me freak all you out. So I have yanked out the 8800, my computer is strangely quiet, and Live 2004 still doesn't recognize the card.

Thank you all :D

All that trouble just because of NBA Live 2004. Damn you Jao and may your kid become a Lakers fan. :x

In the end, I am getting performance boosts on all my games and a quieter computer.....now go make updated 2004 rosters for me, I know your rig can run it.

I prefer 2005 overall but 2006 can be quite fun as well. Besides they're not on Steam.

2004 cheese was pro hop, 2005 cheese was tip ins, 2006 cheese is freestyle superstars. Pick your cheese.

I used to spam up my steals and blocks stats with that cheese.

When I figured out how to use the freestyle rebounding it was over. Let's not forget the 3pt freestyle hookshots, though.

There is freestyle rebounding in 06?

Re: How can I get my 560 to be my primary video card

I thought so. Holding that freestyle button and pressing rebound seem to cover a lot more ground when rebounding. I'm not sure if you had to be a freestyle shot blocker, but I used to get a lot of crazy rebounds with Elton Brand on the Clips.

It's also a good indication of how vicious the comeback logic is at any given time. When you're missing FSS layups left and right, you know the AI is determined to win.
