I've been waiting years for this (my enthusiasm for this game is such that it's nearly impossible not to post entire articles about it). After the classic that was Twisted Metal 2, following the development process, and playing the demo, I can already tell that this will be incredible.

Mostly playing single player. Online servers have been wonky. The Nuke match I tried was kind of a mess but deathmatch was a lot of fun. My favorite car's Meat Wagon so far.

I hope this game do well.

Salt Lake City video game developer Eat Sleep Play laid off eight employees last week as it finishes its anticipated PlayStation 3 game, “Twisted Metal,” and transitions from producing console titles to mobile games.

The Wednesday layoffs represent about 20 percent of the company. Eat Sleep Play now has 26 employees at its Salt Lake City headquarters.

Why the switch to making games for the iPhone and iPad?

“It’s a platform that is in our pockets almost 24/7. It’s kind of the size and types of games we’re playing,” said the company’s co-founder, Scott Campbell. “You can certainly reach a lot more people. That’s pretty exciting for us.”

As for the types of mobile games Eat Sleep Play expects to make, Campbell said, “Hopefully it’s our brand of mechanics-driven gaming brought to these devices.”

Meanwhile, the company’s other co-founder, David Jaffe, is expected to leave to also pursue casual games, Campbell said. Jaffe is well known in the gaming industry for his outspoken views and as the creator of the popular “God of War” game for the Sony PlayStation as well as the “Twisted Metal” franchise. Jaffe lives in San Diego and formed Eat Sleep Play with Campbell in 2007.

“He’s excited to go into the casual space as well,” Campbell said of Jaffe. “He’s got some projects that he’s excited about. So we’re kind of going down two separate paths.”

According to Jaffe's Twitter, he's leaving to start up his own studio in Santa Monica. They will also keep a team there to support the game. Shame to hear it though.

The game's still a lot of fun. Probably not as good as Twisted Metal 2, as that level of strategic play isn't possible with the game's new pace (and dear god why did they add helicopters?!), but I'll still play the shit out of it.

After a scare, I got the game yesterday, and have pretty much been playing it since.

I like it. The gameplay isn't perfect, but it's way better than Black, and the control scheme makes me think it could eclipse TM2. There are a ton of maps (I play a lot of splitscreen so the 36 map variations all count for me) and they're all very fun and intricate. The graphics are rough around the edges but really cool. Custom soundtracks aren't utilized perfectly, but that's a great feature. Some splitscreen games have already been pretty fun and strategic.

However, Online doesn't work yet, just like the demo. The campaign is arguably the worst in this series to date, with only three characters to play through with. I do like that there's variety and that it can be done co-operatively though. I don't like the scoring system for splitscreen deathmatch, and too many cars have a shitty chain gun as their default special.

But it's awesome. Get it.

Looks awesome. Cars + Guns + Multiplayer is always a good for a fun time.
Don't own a PS3 though, soooo that's that.

Which characters are available in multiplayer mode? Or is it just the same three characters available there as well? Already ordered the game, but it'd be a bummer for me if the character selection was limited.

But the Vigilante 8 series sucks.

Except for the level destruction.

I believe all of them are. The single player limitation was done so they could "tell a tighter story" or some other stupid Jaffe shit.

The game wasn't even supposed to have a single player mode. It was just tacked on, and for whatever reason thought it was worth doing live action scenes for.

There are 17 cars (though Warthog is pretty much impossible to unlock) with their own intricacies and Specials, but only four drivers to choose from. That is pretty much an aesthetic thing unless you play TM for single player. It's a design choice so that there are four factions to choose from for team modes.

In single player, you start out with only a few cars, and are restricted to certain ones on certain events, but that's because the campaign largely serves as a practice/training for Online mode. You get almost everything but Warthog right off the bat for offline challenge and splitscreen modes, but the campaign unlocks a couple special things, and Online Mode requires you to grind to unlock cars/features (that I don't think I like)

It wasn't for me :(. I remember having fun with it than Twisted Metal.

Re: Twisted Metal

Wasn't a fan of V8 either. "Realistic" driving physics don't work for car combat games, and TM has always had way better maps and characters. They flourished when Twisted Metal 3 & 4 were the competition though.

My copy of the game arrived yesterday but I haven't gotten down to playing it due to the fact that it came with a free downloadable Twisted Metal Black, and I spent the entire day playing that. A few years ago a friend of mine let me borrow the game for PS2, and I became completely fond of it.

When you get your bearings in the new one, I'll have to play you, Axel. Online is steadily improving and Jaffe claims they are close to a solution, but the servers are still bugged at this point. The games I have been able to get into have been among the funnest online play (next to THUG and its custom maps) I've ever experienced.

TMB is good fun, but if you haven't yet, get TM2 off Playstation Store when you get the chance.

Re: Twisted Metal

Sat Feb 18, 2012 4:16 pm

Definitely look forward to playing you, Lamrock. (Y) If the controls are any different from TMB, then it'll probably take me a bit to pick up experience. I hear you rave about TM2 all the time as well, so one of these days I may give it a try to see whether I can concur with you.

Re: Twisted Metal

Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:45 am

If you don't mind old games, I'd recommend TM2. There's no online play, but it's still the best Twisted Metal there is. The new game has different controls (not a fan of all the changes, but single button advanced attacks is why I like this game), but there's a quick, useful training mode that explains them. I'd recommend playing through that and the single player campaign (only takes a few hours on Normal) before you take it online.

While some missteps were certainly made, I think this game needs some love on here.

Have you tried the game yet, Axel.? Despite the lukewarm reviews (many of the complaints are about the now-fixed online issues and tacked-on campaign mode), it's a fun game and really worth playing. Play the tutorial first (it's a must), and then at least complete the Sweet Tooth portion of the campaign before heading online. You won't regret it.

Though the campaign mode has three race events (I had no problem with them, but some lost their shit over the final one because they didn't play the tutorial and didn't know cars could hop) and you drive cars, it's not a racing game. It's a strategic, almost class based third person shooter. The vehicles handle like they do in action movies, and are as mobile as any video game soldier. The mid-size cars are definitely the best for beginners, followed by the bigs (the helicopter is banned in rooms I host and can go fuck itself), but lately I've grown to like the small cars, which require more practice and a different approach due to their fragility.

Free-for-all deathmatch is mindless carnage but the best way to level up in ranked matches. I prefer Last Man Standing, Team Last Man Standing, Team Deathmatch and Nuke, and I also go with Unranked matches as it allows for more options and everything unlocked for everybody.

Wish they hadn't wasted time on the campaign and live action movies. A smoother launch without the online issues and out-of-place slasher movie inspired cutscenes may have gotten us some DLC and a bigger player base. Regardless, I'm glad it exists.

It is also good to see that David Jaffe has been constantly trying to update the fans with whatever patches and fixes the game is going through. He is also posting cut content and shit like that on his blog which is great btw.

Re: Twisted Metal

Yeah, as much as his ego can get in the way at times, I'm a huge fan of Jaffe.

The greenlight video (which I believe was from 2009 because the suburbs level was done by E3 2010) had some cool shit in it, but they had to make concessions (even with it being delayed four months). For some reason, I love things like that. (I even have the beta version of Tony Hawk 1)

Unfortunately, I have not had the time to try it out. Like I said earlier, I was hyped that the game came with a free full version of Twisted Metal Black and that's the only dose of Twisted Metal I've had in recent weeks. Will have tons of time tomorrow or Thursday to try it out, hopefully it's as good as you say. (Y)

It's the first game out of the TM Series I've ever played and I'm enjoying it, although I'm guessing most people are let down by the weird story...
