Updates to Forum Anti-Spam Measures

Postby Andrew on Thu Aug 11, 2011 10:29 pm

In an effort to curb spambots in the NLSC Forum, we've made a couple of changes to our anti-spam measures. We hope this method will be as unobtrusive to new registrations as possible, while preventing spammers from signing up. Unfortunately this will not block spambots that have signed up before these measures were put in place, but we will deal with them as they reveal themselves.

To prevent spambots from uploading junk to our new Downloads section, we are also now using the Newly registered users feature in phpBB3. All new accounts registered from now on will be automatically placed in the Newly registered users group, until the account has five posts. There are currently no restrictions on posting or profile options but newly registered users will not be able to upload any files to the database. If you encounter any difficulties or have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I say make it 10 posts. I've seen spam accounts get 5 posts quick.

We'll certainly raise the limit if there are still problems but hopefully we'll be able to curb spambots signing up in the first place.
