Welcome to Day One of the Über Update--the biggest, most ambitious update in the history of Team Fortress 2.

We've got a lot to announce as we get closer to the update's release this Thursday, June 23rd. We've been holding one of the surprises pretty close to the vest for months now. We don't want to ruin it, but we'll give you four clues to get you guessing:

1.) It IS a "Meet the" short.
2.) It involves ONE of the two remaining classes.
3.) It's NOT the Pyro.
4.) It's the MEDIC.

Let the speculation begin! While you're puzzling that out, why not click over to the first of our class pack announcements: Mobster Monday. To make sure everything was as accurate as possible, we went deep undercover at the most Italian place we could find, The Olive Garden. We asked the Mafia about a million questions, none of which they understood, because our mouths were full of all the free breadsticks the Mafia gives you when you visit them (they're not such bad guys).

All that hanging out with mob guys must have rubbed off on us, because we've decided to celebrate the Über Update by giving you an offer you can't (or at least shouldn't) refuse--an unprecedented WEEK-LONG FREE WEEKEND of Team Fortress 2, starting right now!

What? It isn't? I'm confused.
I always thought you buy the game and then you get to use the servers for free after that, or do you have to pay for the server use like those filthy MMORPGs? Or do you mean that the game is free to download for the week?
shadowgrin is not used to dealing with such potential awesomeness.

The game is free to download and play for this week, like the past free weekends.

But unlike those you cannot purchase the game currently.

The rumor is that the game is going Free To Play (F2P) meaning you can play the game for free forever like the other F2P games that just got added to Steam. The fact that you can't buy it may support this idea.

F2P MMORPG's mean you don't pay for anything to play, you pay for cosmetic crap and stuff like that. (Which people pay a shit load for more than people subscribe oddly.)

TF2 servers will always be free.

FREE WEEK(END) = Download and play for free during the period. (Purchase to play otherwise.)
FREE 2 PLAY = Play for free forever.

Why didn't I know of such a great thing? Steam is updating as I type this...

They just had a week to celebrate this, and they have daily deals (current Time Gentleman Please pack = awesome for $1.25) and midweek deals and weekend deals and might shortly have a summer deal.

One ignores Steam at their own determent.

Yup.

Enjoying the game considering my disdain for mmorpgs.
Graphics is simple yet pleasing.
Gameplay is usual hack-n-slash but still entertaining and does require some strategy specially if you're playing alone (no party, no one to get your loot!) or with only one person. The game ends up being 'hack-n-slashy' when you have a full party of 4 players and even then someone still dies from battles so you still have to use your wits. If you have high level party member, forget about fighting and just collect all the loot you can get. You can use guns (hit-n-run tactic), bombs (it's a trap!), or shield (counter attacks) that suit your battling skills.
Grinding it out for crowns (game cash) isn't tedious (for now?) like most mmorpgs so you can get the necessary and needed items after every one to two play-thorugh. Since grinding isn't as difficult, you don't end up like crack addict to buy more energy (necessary in the game to advance to the other levels, replenishes in a 24 hr. cycle) with real money to play the game longer. You can play for the day, use up your energy, quit, then come play again tomorrow.
You can also choose which area to go to instead of being limited to one area when you want to do some killing.
It also has a decent bidding system which I just found out recently so you can get the items you want for cheap. Wish I found out about that earlier.
No PvP, though a petition is underway to allow a PvP arena where gamers can fight and other people can bet crowns on the fighters lol.

Since I'm a noob my character is still weak so I die. A lot. I end up typing strategies to my party, which is a surprise that most of them don't even know what to do except hack-n-slash an enemy to death. The strategy required isn't even that difficult if you played any Zelda game.
The most fun I had playing the game was when we were only two in a party and both of us have pretty weak characters so we ended up having to use our inactive brains to plan our attacks with no help of voice chat, didn't even need to type out it out, we just did what needed to be done (why can't the undead die! why!)

Of course there's the usual smack talk. "omg noob!", "epic failz dude!" - and that was just when I died in a training area as I forgot that pressing Esc doesn't pause the game since I had to answer an important call. There are also the 'old' users who complain about change the updates has caused and yearn for the 'good ol days' of the game. An mmorpg it is not if you don't have those.

tl;dr - Consider it a casual mmorpg. Like casual games it's simple yet enjoyable.

I could have posted this in the games right now thread, but more people should know about TF2 being free!

Team Fortess 2 Australian Christmas Event 2011 update coming tomorrow.
New weapons for Engineer and Pyro and a new control point map announced. More new weapons will be announced on the release date tomorrow.


Drop rates are now doubled! Will last for a week.

Just had a game where I had 63 points for the final round, next closest on our team was 32. Medic is god class reconfirmed.

We held on the last point of Goldrush despite three spies, three snipers, only one engineer and for most of the round only one medic. They had a spy push it to like 40% onto the point when he died and time ran out. Both teams went crazy.

Still the best multiplayer game ever.

Badger was on our team, he was worthless as a spy.

I want to play with/against Badger. Man up Rudy, show yourself!

Some friend in Steam keeps on bugging me to play this game cause he will kill me if I don't.
