After 18 years with my company, I(along with a few others), got the word on Thursday. Business is really slow, so the company had to make more cuts.
This is the first time I've been in this situation. I've left jobs, but I never got laid off. I've always worked, and it's a weird feeling not having a job to go to. Now I have to start all over again at age 50, damn. My friends in the graphic design business gave me several contacts. Hopefully I'll get a job sooner rather than later. Thanks to the internet, at least I don't have to drag my portfolio from company to company.
Wish me luck.

Good luck Jeff, you're one of the few people I look up to on the forums so I actually feel bad you got laid off. I hope you find something as soon as possible & it doesn't affect your way of living to a point where it causes a strain in the home life.
Best of luck, keep that positive attitude you always exude & keep in mind that good things happen to good people so I'm sure you'll end up doing just fine.

best of luck Jeff, being in the city you should hopefully find something to keep the downtime to a minimum.

That sucks Jeffx. I was in a similar position a few years ago, working for a small company that had a slight downturn and needed to trim some staff. I'm a lot younger than you, but the job market wasn't great so I ultimately ended up working for myself. It's good to hear that you've got some contacts and avenues to explore, hope you can find a new job soon!

That sucks Jeff. I think the Knicks head coaching role will be available this off-season so you might want to get your resume in early

Yeah but chances are he'd have to deal with Isiah Thomas' presence in the near future and given Jeffx's opinions on Zeke's methods, there might be a slight personality clash. And we all know who Dolan would side with.

True that haha!
Hope you find a job as fast as possible but you're probably are going to find one fast because you're in New York and second you have experience.

Which makes it perfect. Then Isiah (and Dolan) gets to blame Jeffx, and his poor personality and judgment, for the Knicks failings despite all the "talent" and he gets to "reluctantly" take back over the coaching job to right the ship. Like they did with Brown and intended to do with Wilkens.

Of course, but I'm cheering for Jeffx in this scenario.

That sucks Jeffx. Company must've really needed to make cuts to part ways with a long-time worker. Hopefully one of those contacts can get you a job soon.

can't say i completely know what youre going through, but i got laid off at circuit city a few years ago (because of company mismanagement and ggenereal overall shittyness) and my unemployment insurance is coming to an end an im still trying to break into the graphic design business. you are twice my age though, so it does become a double edged sword for you. a lot of people want experienced workers in this type of field and i have been unsuccessful in getting paid to do this job so i think my lack of experience is hurting me a lot, but i can't really tell yet if age is really a negative here.
good luck man if you need help or want to discuss things here or in pm, just holla

That's putting it lightly for that clusterfuck.

Sorry to hear jeffx. Hopefully you can find something soon.

That blows.
Hope things work out for you Jeffx.

Call Prokhorov: im sure he needs a graphic designer for when the Nets move to Brooklyn.
On a serious note, jobs suck nowadays. Do what ya gotta do bro and we'll be here to cheer for your ass either way.

Sorry to hear that. For some reasons, I thought of Red Forman (from That 70s show), when I read this. Both, you and him are around the same age, got laid off after being an employeer for a long time, both loving their sports team, hoping to get a winning season after a while (Knicks and Packers). Hopefully you'll find a job soon enough.

Best of luck Jeffx, I'm sure you'll bounce back shortly

Good luck to you man. I hope you get a descent job soon.

Jeffx since I know you are in the city, you should try out some staffing agencies (that is what I am doing).
Core Staffing Services
On Demand Staffing
Temporary Alternatives
They might all be of help to you! You can apply online to some of them too. Hope that helps.

well the problem with those staffing agencies is that they probably don't have the type of work that he's suited for or looking for. I would suggest Creative Circle, I've looked on their site on occasion but I soon realized it was for people like Jeffx and not for people with little experience like myself.

I think that's the thing with most staffing agencies. They're better suited for people who have little work experience and not for someone like jeffx who probably has more work experience than all of the posters in this thread combined.

"Dumbass!"
Nothing against you Cartar, was reminded of Red's classic line.

I'll check that out. Thanks.
I was at the Fashion Career Fair at 7 West 34th yesterday. Did a few interviews, left my resume with a few companies. There was a design job that was perfect for me - the lady loved my stuff, but she said I might be 'overqualified' for the position. Fucking great. When I first started in this business after college, lack of experience was my problem. Now it's having too much. I hope I don't have to deal with this age shit.
The good news is my severance is coming soon I filed for unemployment, and my ex-boss is extending my health/dental for another month. Plus I'm meeting with an agency tomorrow, and another next week. And my artist buddies are looking out for me.
