two types of cpus, so make sure u know wut ur buying. amd or intel. choose. then choose motherboard that that's compatible with ur cpu. also try to go for the standard size motherboard. some smaller sized motherboard will give u trouble in choosing other components such as most rams requiring 1.4 voltage but many of mini sized mainboard won't support them.
as for the rams, ddr3 rams are the way to go and they're not that expensive these days. under 100 u should get a solid 4 gigs of them. make sure ur motherboard are compatible with them tho. otherwise, ddr2 is also a decent choice too since they come cheaper. not sure extra money is worth ddr3 these days. u can look into it urself.
vid card, if ur building a budget comp, $50 one should do it. it should run you any vids smoothly.
of course power supply... 350Watts one should do u good enuf but it mostly depends on ur vid card power requirement.
dvd writer($15)/blueray($60-$150) ur call. sm/memory card reader = $10, case = depends on ur preference, but gaming comp will require good air flow.
hard disk: cheap cheap cheap these days. if u can afford, go for one SSD(solid state drive) and one extra for size. like one cheap SSD for $80 and one 7200rpm 1tera or less for ($50)
Actually with $500 budget, u should be able to build a decent comp, even an ok gaming comp. all depends what kinda comp u wanna build.
