Charging the Bolt (San Diego Chargers Franchise Madden PC)

Mon Oct 25, 2010 9:20 pm

I decided that I should do a San Diego Chargers franchise, the Steelers don't really make a splash in free-agency, fire and hire coaches often ect ect.

I can do that with the Chargers... This will be the 2011 season going forward... events happen straight after the super bowl in dallas.

Following a tumultuous 2010 season, in which the San Diego Chargers finished 5-11, the franchise owner Alex Spanos has sold the organization to owner of 2929 Entertainment (Billionaire Mark Cuban) for an estimated price of $900 million.

Cuban was born in Pittsburgh and after unsuccessful bids to buy a small share in the Pittsburgh Steelers, he brought the Dallas Mavericks and has also expressed interest in buy the Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins and Chicago Cubs.

But now after many tries, Mark Cuban now owns a National Football League team. "It's a great day for me, to own the San Diego Chargers, were a great team, were stocked with talent, the past few years we haven't done well in certain areas of the league, be that the start of the regular season, or choking away during the play-off's," continued Cuban "I'm here to ensure Charger fans that's going to be fixed, that's my goal -- to bring Championships to the beautiful city of San Diego."

Despite records of 14-2, 11-5 and 13-3 in the past five seasons, the Charger's haven't done well. It's unsure whether head coach Norv Turner, Offensive Coordinator Clarence Shelmon and General Manager A.J. Smith will be relieved of their duties with new management.

Changes are already evident in San Diego.

This morning owner Mark Cuban announced that he relieved general manager, A.J. Smith of his duties.

This comes to no surprise for Charger fans, who have wanted him out for a number of reasons, one of the biggest was how he handled the departure of future hall of famer LaDainian Tomlinson.

Cuban reiterated "Let me say, just one more time, I want to build this franchise into one of the best in the NFL, the most loyal and also have a winning formula, A.J. Smith was not apart of future plans, I wish him the best in the future."

The Chargers also announced the hiring of new General manager Champion Williams. At the age of 24 he becomes the youngest G.M. to manage a team in league history. "Were going to take one season at a time, right now were looking at the draft to see what we can improve on in certain areas.

Fans who gathered outside the Qualcomm Stadium told reporters, "This is great news, I don't know what A.J. Smith did good here, maybe by drafting Ryan Mathews, apart from that I wasn't really fond of the dude and wanted him out since day two."

Rumors admist the firing are that Norv Turner will be fired sometime next week and Ron Rivera will step into the head coaching role after his play-calling led the San Diego Chargers to the #1 ranked defense in last seasons disastrous 5-11 campaign.

Less than 24 hours ago the San Diego Chargers front office got rid of GM A.J. Smith, now they're getting rid of the entire staff with the exception of Ron Rivera.

Rivera was promoted to head coach signing a new 3 year deal worth $5.06M, the Chargers somehow persuaded Rob Ryan to ditch his defensive coordinator post at Cleveland and join San Diego for a 2 year $3.22M contract. Tom Rathman signed a 2 year deal to become the offensive coordinator and Ronnie Bradford signed a 2 year deal to become the new special teams cooridnator.

With a completley new set of staff, the San Diego Chargers will look to take back the AFC West from the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs who went 10-6.

Two San Diego Chargers called it quits as Billy Volek and Alphonso Boone hung up their cleats after 11 seasons in the National Football League.

Volek joined the Chargers in the summer of 2006 as the backup quarterback to Philip Rivers and Alfonso Boone joined the Chargers last summer after spending six years as a Chicago Bear.

They wern't the only ones to announce their retirement. Brian Dawkins, Keith Brooking, Donald Driver, James Farrior, Brett Favre, Hines Ward, Ronde Barber, Jason Taylor, Terrell Owens and Derrick Mason retired and unfortunatley, Percy Harvin and Cadillac Williams stepped away from the game with career ending injuries.

The San Diego Chargers opted not to resign their star linebacker Shawne Merriman who they had drafted 12th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. Merriman had one of the best starts for an outside linebacker in NFL history racking up 39.5 Sacks in his first three seasons, however, in the last three seasons, the injury prone-steroid scandled linebacker has acquired just four sacks.

"It's sad to see him go," said head coach Ron Rivera, who coached Merriman for a couple of seasons as the defensive coordinator. Merriman wasn't the only player let go by the Chargers who as high-profile. Eric Weddle too who's contract was not renewed after drug scandles last season that also plagued Steven Gregory.

For the third time in seven years the San Diego Chargers have drafted a defensive end/linebacker with their 1st overall selection.

"He's a great player, that person in the trenches getting to the quarterback is exactly what we need to boost our depth, age and talent." said head coach Ron Rivera. It's fitting that the new head coach and defensive coordinator have drafted a defensive player first instead of an offensive player.

"Were lucky to have someone talented like Greg abroad," said Rob Ryan, the defensive coordinator and brother of Jets head coach Rex Ryan. The San Diego Chargers opted not to re-sign Shawne Merriamn throughout the offseason and Romeus will most likely start on the left handside of the defensive end position before moving into the outside linebacker position.

2009: Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Unanimous First Team All-Big East…Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award finalist…named to three All-America teams at season's end, including CollegeFootballNews.com (second team), Sporting News (third team) and Rivals (third team)...had 43 tackles, 11.5 TFLs and eight sacks…also had an INT, a fumble recovery, three forced fumbles and a blocked PAT…2008: All-Big East (second team) selection...started all 13 games and compiled 51 tackles, 15.5 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery...had three blocked PATs (two vs. Rutgers and one vs. Bowling Green)...named Sun Bowl's Most Valuable Lineman after collecting two sacks (for 20 yards in losses) and four total tackles vs. Oregon State...2007: Named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers, CollegeFootballNews.com, The Sporting News, Rivals and Scout...played in all 12 games and compiled 41 tackles...second on the team with 11.5 TFLs...tied for second with four sacks...2006: Redshirted as a true freshman.

Trade Details: Chargers Sent: Jacob Hester, Antoine Cason, 3rd round pick (7th) Falcons Sent: 32nd overall pick, 4th round pick & 5th round pick

The San Diego Chargers have always been aggressive with the draft, and this year isn't any different as the Chargers unloaded talented players to move up into the first round to draft Prince Amukamara, the highly talented cornerback from Nebraska.

"He's a special player," commented Rob Ryan. "We thought he would be gone by the 15th pick, twice as many later he was still there so we decided that we need that Darrelle Revis type of player, and now we have one in Amukamara."

That might be a problem, the Chargers drafted Cornerbacks in the first rounds of 2003, 2006 and 2008, the former they famously passed up now Steelers safety Troy Polamalu.

2009: Registered five interceptions to rank second on the team behind Matt O'Hanlon. Amukamara had a team-high 11 pass breakups, including four games with at least a pair of breakups. Amukamara finished 19th nationally in passes defended at 1.14 per gamee. He also contributed 64 tackles, including a pair of sacks, and had at least five tackles in five games...2008: Played in all 13 games in 2008, including starts against Western Michigan, New Mexico State and Virginia Tech. He started the opener with Murillo slowed by injury, then replaced an injured Anthony West against the Aggies. He made 34 tackles, including 21 solo stops, ranking as one of the leading tackles among non-starters...2007: Amukamara did not play in the first three games, but saw action in eight of the season’s final nine games. In addition to providing depth at cornerback, Amukamara was a regular on Nebraska’s kickoff coverage unit.

It appears the Chargers have found their new starting free safety -- Oklahoma Sooners 2010 Jim Thorpe Winner Quinton Carter.

Carter was a part of a team that went to the 2009 BCS Bowl game, but lost to the Florida Gators, from then on Carter had performed at a high level for the Sooners when he recorded 60 tackles and 7 interceptions in his final season at Oklahoma.

"He's a very good safety, It's everything we wanted and needed, he's a big package in a small frame, he can put a licker on bodies and he can force turnovers through the air," said head coach Ron Rivera.

That's likely three new defensive starters in their first three picks.

2009: All-Big 12 second team by coaches and honorable mention by AP ... took over starting position at free safety spot and responded as team's second-leading tackler with 80 stops ...2008: Started two games at safety when defense shifted to five starting defensive backs ... third on team with 14 special teams tackles ... led team with 14 solo special teams tackles...2007: Redshirted...2006: Played in five games, all on special teams units ... earned a reputation as one of the secondary's most physical players.

Round One: Pick Seven
DE Greg Romeus (Pittsburgh) (Grade: 8/10)
Image

The Chargers could of gone defensive back in the first or linebacker, but they decide to immediatley insert the rookie pass rusher on the left side of defensive end. The Chargers led the league in sacks last year with 57 and will get a couple more with a speedster in Romeus.

Round One: Pick Thirty-Two
CB Prince Amukamara (Nebraska) (Grade: 10/10)
Image

The Chargers traded Antoine Cason away and will get a much better suited shutdown corner in Amukamara than Cason. Amukamara was dropping down the draft for no apparant reason and the Chargers traded back into the first round to draft the talented cornerback.

Round Two: Pick Seven
FS Quinton Carter (Oklahoma) (Grade: 6/10)
Image

The Chargers panicked and drafted the talented free-safety at least a round too early, Carter was a big hitter and a ballhawk for the Sooners in the backfield and also represented Oklahoma in the BCS game back in January 2009.

Round Three: Pick Nine
WR DeAndre Brown (Southern Miss) (Grade: 8/10)
Image

The Chargers draft another big receiver, they recently re-signed Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd, but another holdout could devastate the Chargers again and Brown gives them some blanket room.

Round Five: Pick Seven
DT Martin Parker (Richmonnd) (Grade: 6/10)
Image

Nothing special about this pick, will give added depth and may push for some playing time if the Chargers blow teams out, not the next Jamaal Williams.

Round Five: Pick Thirty-Two
TE Kyle Adams (Purdue) (Grade: 8/10)
Image

Once considered a top 10 draft pick before being busted for smoking marijuana, the Chargers will try to develop the troubled tight-end who could eventually replace Antonio Gates, if he ever retires.

Round Six: Pick Seven
QB Philip Rivers (Virginia Tech) (Grade: 7/10)
Image

The Chargers draft the second most winningest quarterback in Tech history, Taylor set all major passing records but decided to use his arm instead of legging it off riskily like Michael Vick did, the Chargers get a young backup for the rest of Rivers career, and he's a luxury in the sixth round, think of Dennis Dixon, but probably will turn out to be a better pro player.

Round Seven: Pick Seven
RB Noel Devine (West Virginia) (Grade: 9/10)
Image

Another nice selection from the San Diego Chargers, as soon as they didn't resign Darren Sproles they draft another Sproles-esq player, Devine could turn out to be the better professional player but won't trouble Mathews for the starting spot. This could be a huge steal for the Chargers when Devine tears up the NFl through the ground and return game.

Overall Draft Grade: 8/10 - A very solid by the New San Diego Chargers management team.

As soon as Bob Sanders was made a free agent, the San Diego Chargers scooped up the 2007 defensive player of the year for a 3-5 year deal worth $14.14M, Sanders was also rewarded a $5.15M signing bonus.

Sanders will be one of the four new defensive starters going into next season and the third on defense. The Chargers also signed cornerback William Gay and defensive tackle Tank Tyler.

Rookie right tackle free agent Casey Richter and one year pro Chris Scott signed 2 year contracts, Richter may be expected to start.

The San Diego Chargers' 2011 preseason schedule was released tonight and they will open up against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Expect to see a lot of Tyrod Taylor, Noel Devine and the new draftees in action as the game is broadcast primetime on NBC starting 10:00 pm eastern time.

The Chargers wrap up their preseason with a short trip to St. Louis, where the Rams were a surprise last year finishing 9-7 in the NFC West, before going 7-1 before the bye but dropped four straight and their last two games that spelt the end of their season.

What we learned about the San Diego Chargers tonight:

The Chargers should be back to being one of the superior teams in the league, the defense which was ranked #1 last season had five new starters and looked equally as good.

The good things we saw from last night

• The San Diego Chargers first-team offense went 4 for 4 on third downs for the night which allowed them to build a 17-0 lead.

Ryan Mathews looked strong on the first drive, the Chargers on their first drive scored a touchdown, Mathews ran for over 40 yards and capped the drive off with a seven yard touchdown run.

• Rookie quarterback Tyrod Taylor distributed the ball pretty well, Taylor completed 7 of his 15 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown, the touchdown was caught by Deion Branch, who evaded a tackler and ran the ball 88 yards for the score.

• The defense forced Michael Vick into throwing four interceptions during the second half, Kevin Kolb didn't fare much better, he threw 12 times but for just 47 yards.

Noel Devine looked good last night, Devine carried the ball 29 times for 81 yards, although he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry he had a long 22 yard run and also threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson.

The bad things we saw from last night

Philip Rivers was injured during the first series and is now out for the first three games of the season with a torn shoulder. Head coach Ron Rivera announced that rookie quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be starting the regular season, as the job is now his to lose until Rivers comes back from injury.

No matter what the Oakland Raiders try to do -- they just can't beat the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers defense restricted J.P. Losman to just 100 passing yards and forced 3 interceptions, one of them went to rookie Quinton Carter and Ryan Mathews rushed for 157 yards and scored the only touchdown of the game as the San Diego Chargers defeated the Oakland Raiders, 13-3 at the Oakland Coliseum sunday.

San Diego's revitalised #1 ranked defense from last year was blitzing Oakland on almost every down which led to the first turnover of the game on Oakland's second series -- an intended over the middle pass to Darren McFadden who was rattled and rookie free safety Quinton Carter picked off the bottled pass and set up the first field goal of the game with 5 minutes reamining in the first quarter.

"I was proud of how our defense came together," said defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who was awarded the game ball after the game as the Raiders just couldn't figure out the play-calling from San Diego's sideline. "He's a top notch 'caller," said Bob Sanders who intercepted a pass during the third quarter, his first for San Diego after spending seven seasons in Indianapolis.

"How's this for numbers," gleamed Chargers head coach Ron Rivera. "We made that quarterback complete just 7 of his 22 passes, threw for only 100 yards, sacked 3 times, picked off the same amount and performed to a quarterback rating of 8.0, that's what I call San Diego defense."

It wasn't much later that the San Diego Chargers went on their only scoring drive of the game after Ryan Mathews ran to the right and evaded Rolando McClain for a 68 yard gain and would eventually run in a one yard touchdown with just six seconds left to put the Chargers up 10-0 going into the second quarter.

Without starting quarterback Philip Rivers, San Diego couldn't do much on offense, although Tyrod Taylor didn't put up the numbers Rivers would do on a normal game day, he managed the offense good enough for the win, tossing zero turnovers and throwing for 143 yards.

"He took a beating," said Kris Dielman. "Welcome to the league," joked Marcus McNiell who is mentoring rookie free-agent Casey Richter who was forced into the starting line-up upon arrival and gave up 3 of the five sacks today.

"He's doing Ok," said Mathews. "The majority of my runs came from the right-hand side, So he's not doing that badly, he was in a hard-hitting smash-mouth game today, he played just fine, and as a scrambler, Ty's always going to be brought down a couple of times a game, we had a lot of rookies starting today, so it was a job well done for them all."

Whilst Mathews is trying to become the next LaDainain Tomlinson, Darren McFadden isn't showing anything to the Raiders that made him the 4th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by rushing for just 48 yards, although to the Chargers credit, is a very good run defense.

Credit to the Chargers offense as well, which converted 11 of it's 24 converted third downs.

Notes:The Chargers defense is the only team in the NFL to so far hold it's opponent out of the red-zone... The Chargers offense totaled 289 yards compared to the Raiders 173... Chargers Cornerback William Gay left the game and was diagnosed with a bruised right shoulder and did not return and is out for at least minimum 2 weeks

Even though both quarterbacks threw a ton of interceptions, the game was determined by one or two -- say several big plays.

Despite 6th overall draft pick Kevin Riley throwing 8 interceptions, he also threw 3 touchdowns, two of them straight after going 14-0 down from throwing a pick six to Quentin Jammer who recorded three interceptions on the day.

That wasn't enough as Prince Amukamara picked off two passes and dived in for a touchdown to give the Chargers a 29-17 lead... It surely looked like it was going to be the end of the game for the Carolina Panthers here.

Not yet though as Jonathan Stewart rushed for 94 yards and Steve Smith caught 5 passes for 121 yards. "It wasn't the greatest of defensive efforts by us," said Ron Rivera, who praised the defense last week after keeping the Raiders out of the endzone. "It doesn't help either when your quarterback throws six interceptions."

Three of them went to Richard Marshall who returned the game winning interception back for a touchdown with five minutes to spare to give the Panthers a 30-29 lead, the two point conversion was missed, but the excitement wasn't.

"We defeated a very good team," said defensive captain Job Beason.

The Chargers fall to 1-1, despite Ryan Mathews, Noel Devine and Quentin Jammer having very big games. Mathews rushed for 120 yards on 19 carries, rammed his way for a 47 yard touchdown early in the game, Devine averaged 5.3 yards per carry when running the football and averaged 31.3 yards on kick returns, but none were bigger than Quentin Jammers effort, 3 interceptions, 4 defelections and 4 tackles.
