Steelers get ready to face the FalconsPosted by thatwizardguy on Sept 10 2010Storyline...The Steelers are known for being the bird killers, the Steelers defeated the Seahawks, 21-10 in Super Bowl XL, ousted bitter rivals the Ravens in the AFC Championship game two seasons ago and then went on to defeat the Cardinals in a thrilling Super Bowl victory that delivered them a best in the NFL a sixth Lombardi Trophy.
Now they will face the Atlanta Falcons, even though they open up as the home side they will be under extreme pressure to perform, particularly their defense, which let them down so badly last season after giving up various leads in to what can only be described to Steeler fans as "forgettable games" in a season filled with injuries, agony and high-expectations.
Now they have vertually little to no expectations by other fans of the NFL as they will start Dennis Dixon sunday against the Falcons. The Falcons come into this game under third year quarterback Matt Ryan who is poised for a break-out year and Michael Turner who is coming back from an injury last season.
If the Steelers are to win...• They will need to get back to their 2008 defensive form, where they surrendered only 237.2 yards per game and allowed just 3.9 yards per gain over 974 scrimmage plays, last year they dropped to allowing 305.3 yards per game and 5.1 average respectively.
• Rashard Mendenhall will need to carry the offense on his shoulders, if he does not play well or does not produce long gains and touchdowns, it could be a long month for the Steelers, Mendenhall looked decent last year, but he will need to have career highs if the Steelers want to go above .500 without Ben Roethlisberger.
• Forcing Turnovers. The Steelers recorded just 12 interceptions last season, 3 were from Troy Polamalu who played in just a handful of games and Ike Taylor recorded just one interception all year long, at the end of week 17. The Cornerbacks need to be in the 2008 form that gave up just 156 yards per game, if they don't turn things around, goodbye play-offs for the season.
If the Falcons are to win...• Don't rush Matt Ryan into the game, the quarterback has yet to see a complex defensive system in his young career, let him get comfortable and feed Michael Turner the ball early and often to take some of the pressure of the quarterback.
• The Falcons will need to display some good defense today and restrict Dennis Dixon to doing anything at all, if they can make the Steelers offense one dimensional and play 8 in the box when Mendenhall rushes the football, the Falcons could win based on turnovers and field possession.
• Special Teams. The Steelers were putrid on special teams last season, if the Falcons can use that to their advantage with their solid returns, they may not need any offense as long as their defense can keep Pittsburgh's offense out of the endzone.
After sixty-minutes..The Atlanta Falcons should wriggle their way out of this one, but barely as the Falcons will take this 12-9, Ben Roethlisberger's absence already weakens Pittsburgh by that much.
