Graffiti Art

DISCLAIMER: Am not encouraging you to go out and be a dumbass and spray walls and get arrested. If you're an idiot, move along.

So we had the tats thread...i'm watching a documentary called "Bomb It" all about graffiti artists and how the movement started etc.

I've always been fascinated by graffiti art, seriously like ever since I was a kid. And i'm not talking about canvas/easel graffiti being sold in a gallery, im talking about actual tags on buildings, walls, trains etc. I don't know why, the style has just always appealed to me. I have no artistic talents whatsoever could be part of it, im baffled at the amount of depth that can be put in a "quickly as possible" mode with spray paint and markers. Closest I ever got to being a tagger was some friends made a stencil of wheelchairs we spray painted on a bike path we used a lot in college. I drove them. Real wild kids in the cornfields of Illinois...

What personally surprises me is the violence/gangs/territorialness of it all. Maybe I'm just an altruistic fuck, but I'd think you'd want to work together to cover every surface in a town, rather than fighting over the same spot.

Also not a fan of the gangs marking their territory, thats a huge problem around here.

So..what do you guys think of graffiti? Like it, hate it? Couldn't give less of a shit?

I like it when it looks good and sprawled over a place where nobody owns. What I do not like is how people here put their graffiti in some places that shouldn't be there like say, UNDER THE BRIDGE.

I love most graffiti except for just random tags scribbled somewhere. The way they use colors that really shouldn't go together but somehow make it work has always impressed me. Wish I had a wall I could paint on lol. I've got the most amazing graffiti documentary, it's fucking hilarious. I'll post a link to it later.

True graffiti art is pretty impressive as it's obvious those people are pretty talented. I like the idea of providing places that give those people a creative outlet without making them into criminals. As for random tags and the like, I'm no fan of that and have no problem with those people being prosecuted if they're caught.

phpBB [video]

It's in 7 parts so if you don't like the first part you won't like the other 6, but it's funny as hell.

Graffiti art can be absolutely amazing and there should be more places to encourage these people. I share Andrew's sentiment on taggers.
