Civilization V

Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:57 am

It's coming out on the 21st, and I already pre-ordered on Steam. Is anybody else looking forward to this new addition to the franchise? What do you think of the new additions and changes (i.e. hex tiling instead of square, no more unit stacks)?

dude i will be playing this non-stop when it comes out. i don't know about the changes yet. i really liked civ 3 from a gameplay standpoint, so going to 4 was tough, but i got used to it. i assume the same will happen for 5. apparently there's no religions in this game... interesting to see how much the game has changed. since you pre-ordered it you get the Babylonians for free? i really wanna get the free civ, but i get all my games from best buy because i get rewards for buying from there.

The extra Civs will be available as DLC.

Same here. I'm so excited.

I think the hex tiling is a welcome change as there are six ways to move and they're in all equal distance as opposed to the previous square tiling where you can travel further diagonally. War strategy should be improved with this change. The only thing I don't like is how wonky borders appear with hex tiling, but I'll get used to that.

I did enjoy religion, but I don't think adding it or removing it hurts the gameplay since culture is still present. Ditto with gold vs commerce where they ditched commerce entirely for just gold. Everything seems more streamlined while maintaining complexity by eliminating what could be redundant. I think they made smart changes from what I've read that offers a different gameplay without drastically changing the core of the series.

I didn't get the deluxe (which has Babylon and a game soundtrack) since I don't think the extra $10 is worth it, and I'm sure the civilization will be offered as DLC for less than that. Since you're gonna get it from Best Buy, if they have it available, there's that $100 special edition.

yeah i think the religion thing was pretty annoying with Aztecs and Mayans always hating you if you're a different religion but then again it's pretty realistic the way some people hate on different religions in real life.

and as far as changes to gameplay, i agree they always seem to make sense from game to game, so there shouldn't be too many legitimate gripes about it.

who do you play as? I usually go with the Ottomans because their traits follow what i usually go for. (scientific & industrious i think) and the sipahi is badass

I haven't really played as a specific nation in Civ IV since I liked trying out different nations, though in Civ III, I usually went as Babylon or India. In Civ V, they're changing those specialized advantages to one special ability, like England has "Sun Never Sets" which gives each naval unit +2 movement. Every nation seems to get something that'll boost their advantage in war, science, economics or culture. Then there's the unique units and unique buildings.

I really don't know which nation I'll go with in this game, but it'll be spur of the moment I guess. You could get a head start on downloading the Civ V manual recently released: http://www.civilization5.com/#/community/feature_manual

Never been a fan of strategy game, but this looked good, so tryed out the demo for Civ 4 and it was quite awesome, once I got a hold of it. I might get the 5th one, but I checked out the requirements and I had one problem:

CPU Speed
Minimum: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz or AMD Athlon X2 64 2.0 GHz
You Have: 2.93 GHz

Does this mean that I won't be able to run it at all?

All that's listed there is your speed, not what processor you have.

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
You don't need to install it, just grab the zip version for your OS and run the .exe within it.

I tryed to see if I would be able to pass the minimum requirements for it here, the other stuff passed (the link you're referring to is similar thing, only a lot more stuff, right? Kind of newbie in this area).

No, the link I posted was to a piece of software that will identify your processor so you can tell us what you have. All we have currently is your speed.

Oh, then Intel (R) Core(TM)2 DUO PC E7500 @ 2.93GHz 2.40HZ should be the processor?

Here's the pic from that program.

Notice that the requirements say Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz. You have a Core 2 Duo at 2.93 GHz. Of course you pass.

skimmed through it pretty quick and 2 thigs i noticed. first, they don't seem to mention coast/sea tiles, so maybe all they have is ocean tiles now? and also, the removal of saltpeter, which i have mixed feelings about. i mean, it was amazing when you get it but you're totally screwed and have to kiss someone's ass to get it.

Not sure what you've missed, but the manual does mention coast, and saltpeter hasn't been in the game since Civ III.

This game is fucking amazing.

The art from the art deco style to detailed icons, and the streamlined intuitive UI design is world class. The hex tiles and one unit per tile seems to really improve the strategy factor. It's a fantastic game, and so far, it's looking to be significantly better than Civ IV.

I'm not going to sleep much tonight.

Edit: Two days in, I'm fucking addicted to this game.

holy shit i can't stop playing this game. i played through one game already as the ottomans on cheiftain level and i have only a few minor issues. my favorite part of the game is the diplomacy. i cant stand the fact that you can't see whether someone likes you or not or if they like someone else or even if they are at war or peace with someone else. i dunno what i did, but everyone started hating me at the end. i declared war on arabia and they were allied with some silly city state and after i killed them off i forgot i was still at war with the city state and i left it for a while. every few turns, the leaders would show up just to talk shit to me. i don't see the point in that. honestly i didnt know they had a problem with me until the HOSTILE word came up next to their name.
the no piollution thing is weird too. i wonder what they do to simulate nuclear fallout if they have that.
giant death robot is awesome  nice surprise
i like the mini side missions that the city states provide.
I'm glad they kept the guy who reads the quotes for each new technology  i really like it for some reason.
otherwise, everything else is what i expected so im thoroughly addicted at this point. im playing another game on the next level up as japan and removed most of the annoying city states. they piss me off.

Actually, Leonard Nimoy was replaced with Morgan Sheppard, but they both fit the role well.

I didn't really like the city states at first, but they're actually pretty valuable. Make them allies, and they'll give you bonuses. City states are either militaristic, maritime, or cultured, which means after several turns, you could get either a free unit, free food, or free culture. They're also good diplomatic chips against rival civs.

isn't that guy from Star Trek? well, either way, they sound the same i couldnt tell the difference.

so how do you use them properly? the ones near me get in the way of where i am building my cities so i get tempted to take them over. otherwise, i just go about my business and leave them be. i don't like paying 250 gold to make them like me only for it to slowly go away, i feel like it's a waste

Yep, he's the Star Trek dude.

It's 250 gold to be friends, 500 gold to be allies, though you're allies for quite several turns actually. When you're friends, that's when the bonuses kick in. If you're tempted to take over, then go for it, though keep in mind it'll affect your civ's happiness rating. If you're in war, a city state could be beneficial in supporting you, especially if a rival civ borders an ally city state. I think it's worth the gold, especially if you don't want to build military units or farms.

you know, i also like how the leaders talk to you in their language too. i feel like the techs come too quickly compared to units and buildings but then at the end you never really get to all of the techs, so it's a ewird imbalance that i cant put my finger on just quite yet.

Re: Civilization V

What speed do you play on?

Re: Civilization V

Thu Sep 30, 2010 11:19 am

i played 2 games on standard and i just started a new one on epic (the next one up) and the sciences do take maybe 5-10 turns more to get which seems right but then i try to build buildings or units in my cities and i'm looking at like 35 turns for a granary, which does seem like too much

Re: Civilization V

Thu Sep 30, 2010 11:29 am

I always play Civ IV on Marathon so I didn't notice anything out of wack in the demo.

Other than the fact it seems to take longer to build standard city improvements than to build Wonders.
