Futurama Thread: ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!

Postby Andrew on Wed Jun 23, 2010 11:16 am

A new season of Futurama starts on the 24th with two episodes. Anyone else looking forward to it?

Rebirth

After the events of Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder, the Planet Express Crew go through the wormhole and are brought back to Earth (the wormhole being Earth's channel for shipping). However, due to being chased by Zapp Brannigan, the ship crashes by the Planet Express building, leaving the Professor and Fry the only ones to survive the crash, and the Professor must bring the others back to life. The episode will focus on the relationship between Fry and Leela. Also during the third act, there will be a robot version of Leela.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela

Zapp Brannigan and Turanga Leela end up stranded on a Garden of Eden-like planet.

So I was on the internet looking for educational materials about nutrition and like happens so often running into pornography I accidentally ran into something called a "torrent" site. And while I tried to find the back button I accidentally noticed that the first two episodes may have accidentally been released onto the internet and that some people may accidentally download them.

So just a heads up. Watch out for some of those dangers out there on the internet.

They were a bit closer in tone to the movies than the original episodes, but I didn't mind that too much. I would like to see more eps that are closer to the style of the original run but I did enjoy the first two new episodes.

Anyone else catch the latest episode? I thought it was another good one, perhaps not exactly the freshest parody around but it's still good for a laugh.

thought it was funnier than it really was cause we were watching with someone who was trying to convert us from our ipod touch to the new iphone & get us to actually use twitter/facebook.

Couldn't have asked for better timing with that episode.

I loved how Mom represented "Apple", Mom's great

There were also a bunch of jabs at internet culture and Twitter and Iphones...Mom's presentation and then the battery runs out after a few minutes

Latest episode reminded me of the Simpsons, with some cheap jokes and then ends all of a sudden.

I just have higher expectations from Futurama, you could stick this into Animation Domination and I would still be picking American Dad each week.

That's not what I want from Futurama. It's not even like King of the Hill when it was being burnt off. It's not good. It's not using the characters, the movies despite their flaws worked Fry as the original series did (even if they fell short on the other characters), the episodes are not.

The brilliance of Fry in the original series was two-fold, he was the avatar for connecting us to the future world and he was also the most complex character as slowly revealed throughout a few episodes a season. For example, the former finale basically revolved around him alone. (Leela and Bender's plots were entirely focused on how they affected Fry's.) The films worked at their best when Fry was the impetus for the plot. "Rebirth" did this and put in an epic twist, but the last two episodes have been Family Guy fodder.

Not saying they all need to be Jurassic Bark, and I do trust that they're trying to re-find their footing, but they haven't really gotten back to getting that ensemble working yet, they're a while from using Fry to put it over the top. I do hope they get another season from this though.

But remember, I'm the one who wanted the new Scrubs to go another season after the last one since I thought it was better than almost everything since J.D. and Elliot leaned in for a kiss on that cot.

Fair call. I would have to agree they're not up to the standards of the best of the original run and I've considered the possibility of post-revival disappointment, similar to Family Guy which I found entertaining at first but like a lot of people have been disappointed with since. Still, I have enjoyed the first few eps for what they are, though I'm hoping they'll reconnect with their roots and pull out another Luck of the Fryrish or Jurassic Bark.

After the 2-episode premiere it seems like they are putting their spin on current issues such as "Robosexuality" and "Eye-Phones"...kind of like Family Guy and the Simpsons. I can't remember the original Futurama series having a plot line revolving around current affairs. I don't really mind though, the new shows are moderately funny.

The thing with Futurama...it was a comedy, but at times it could make you cry such as the Fry's Dog episode. It's nice to have a comedy that can also be serious at times.

They did venture into that territory at times with episodes like "The Problem with Popplers" and "The Birdbot of Ice-catraz". I don't mind it, so long as it's a funny take and I thought the last episode achieved that.

Does anybody happen to know if Simpsons writers are also writing for Futurama? Also, I think I read something about Futurama getting all new writers (than from season 5) after almost finding new voice actors for the characters. True?
