Air Alert: Sink or Swim

Postby Fresh8 on Wed Mar 31, 2010 6:55 pm

I did Air Alert back in late 2008. After 7 weeks, I felt an improvement in my vertical. I don't know if The X could see it so hopefully he can shed some light on this. I think I was close to touching the rim or at least on my way towards that goal. Doing the program definitely improved my game - it was at least making me more confident and I remember that I was chasing down more fast break attempts and getting some swats (a rarity for me if you ask X or Dragon). Whether it had a big impact on my game, I truly can't say yes or no.

What happened after Week 7 was chicken pox, which kept me out of any sport for about 5 weeks. When I was better, exams started and after that, I started a new job. By the time I played basketball again, three months had passed. And my newly gained vertical sort of faded over time.

Right now, I am jumping nowhere near as high as I did even a year ago. So I've had this hunch to start Air Alert again. I was going to start this week but after a run last night, my left knee was a bit sore so I will start it next Monday. Being around 5'7" - 5'8" (1.72 m), my aim is to just touch the rim. Hopefully improving those fast twitch muscles will make me quicker.

My first objective will be to touch the rim by Week 8 - which is around the time my team makes the playoffs.

My second objective is to have made enough gains by Week 12 in order to finish the program then because according to my friend, the program becomes ridiculous around that stage.

Hopefully I don't blow out my knees or anything. I started this thread as a place to log my progress, keep me motivated, and perhaps help to answer the question many wonder about: does Air Alert work. Feel free to post any of your experiences with it here!

Started - Could touch the rim, but not dunk.
After 8 weeks - Could touch the rim, but not dunk. :D

Right now, I can do some weak-ass dunks and jump off two legs and hang on the rim. But I'm thinking of starting again in the summer so I could really throw down. I mean I'm 6'3/6'4. And hopefully I can finish, so I can see some real improvement.

My friend is 6'2" and did it and as a result he could dunk. He's lost it all though because he stopped playing basketball for a year and a bit but now is back. He started dunking again a lil while ago but nothing as good as he used to.

Plyometrics are not made for recovery, they're made for improving healthy muscles/joints. If you're injured and do this stuff, you're going to make it worse. Sit, be careful bro. If your knees already sore, its a risky venture to do this insanity Air Alert.

You don't need to be able to chase down players & block shots. You need be able to go left as well as you go right. The use of changes of speed/pace is also something that you should incorporate.

In the end, you seem quite injury prone for whatever reason so Air Alert might not be the best answer. It's a quick fix.

Yeah, will be watching how my knees go. Played basketball today and they seemed to be fine. So will closely monitor it.

It is a quick fix but I am committed to this. You know how stubborn I am. Also, am working on my skills as well. Playing a lot more than I have been for the past 6 months. I think finding time to play basketball is the biggest issue.

After hearing about your sore knee, I suggest doing some strength and conditioning before using the wear and tear program again. Also, if you do start it again, don't worry about finishing all the repetitions in one go if you are exhausted, it's ok to rest. If you do start it, make a thread and post your progress.

Also, you need to add a runner/floater in the lane. I told you to add that years ago

Yeah, I work on lower body in the weights room so I think I'm as ready as I can be.

And yeah man, starting on Monday with this and will start posting progress in this thread. I will measure my vertical every 4 weeks.

I know. As you could tell, it comes and goes. My shooting touch has been horrible and the past month has been rubbish...

Not in an actual game. LOL. Ok, they are a rarity. I probably take more fadeaways than anything... i must admit that.

Well I am planning on starting air alert after my weight loss program is complete. As of right now I got 50 lbs to lose before I am complete and my goal to lose this weight is september. I have noticed a nice increase in my vertical just off weight loss and running alone. I can now touch the backboard (not during a lay up.) I am hoping to be able to dunk by the end of the year, with air alert starting 15 weeks before the year ends.

How tall are you doobie? And I used to be able to backboard tap during a layup but not anymore. Man, the good old days...

True.

Well, I'm 5'7" - 5'8" and around 12-15 inches from touching the rim.

Week 1 starts tommorrow!

Damn. I hope you are out of shape right now. So your basically touching the bottom of the net? I suggest not setting a goal for dunking, just set one for better explosiveness. Try to get as quick as you can. Getting off the ground quicker can get you open shots because it will catch the defense by surprise when you spring into the air so quickly. Sorry to be so negative, but you are a long way away from dunking. But hey, there have been people who have completed the program and been able to dunk, I just don't think that dunking should be the main priority. Maybe you should go-to/join a gym and ask one of the trainers for advice on how to meet your goals.

No Pdub, i don't think i will dunk. My main goal is to touch the rim. i am thinking realistically i will become a lil more explosive and hopefully quicker. I am in fairly good shape at the moment, I hit the gym 3 times a week and play ball twice a week so this is just something extra.

a few guys think I can touch the rim after air alert. Also... Yeah the goal is to only touch the rim. I been close to it before so i'm pretty confident about it.

And thanks for being realistic to bring me back down to Earth. :)

Halfway through the first week. I do my air alert in between my sets in the weights room. I can't touch the ceiling of the weightsroom anymore - in comparison to last time I did air alert, I could touch it after 4 weeks. Hopefully I can reach that mark again with the program this time around.

So far no dramas.

Hell yeah, I can touch the rim when I barely jump. Can't dunk it properly though because I don't have big enough hands to hold the ball. So I only can dunk on putbacks occasionally.

btw: I got no hops at all, but you can't teach height :D (6-3)

Pretty much the same for me, accept I can't do (or at least haven't tried) put-back dunks. I should be able to dunk more easily, I'm 6'4 with a ~6'7 wingspan. I'm gonna start again in the summer. My goal is to dunk with 2 hands on a regular basis.
