So, I want an 120hz TV

Postby JaoSming on Sat Jan 23, 2010 2:31 pm

Every year around this time where money situations get a little better due to tax refunds I tend to splurge a little bit. 2 years ago i got this computer, last year I got a 2nd HDTV for the living room and a pool table.

This year the one thing that has caught my eye is a 120hz HDTV. After seeing the difference in Walmart running MJ old music videos and then understanding what these TVs do it made me want one.

Doing some research (aka, checking prices) I also found out that there are 240hz TVs now (and then I start feeling out of touch and old). Come to find out that my co-worker's new TV that he got the other month is a 120hz and he was telling me how his tech buddies were jealous because of the quality.

So, do any of you have one of these magical mythical devices? Any reasons why a gamer wouldn't want one? And how cheap do you think I could go and still get one with the incoming tax refund.
Opinions are my own.

There was a businessman who was getting ready to go on a long business trip. He knew his wife was a flirtatious sort, so he thought he'd try to get her something to keep her occupied while he was gone, because he didn't much like the idea of her screwing someone else.

So he went to a store that sold sex toys and started looking around. He thought about a life-sized sex doll, but that was too close to another man for him. He was browsing through the dildos, looking for something special to please his wife, and started talking to the old man behind the counter. He explained his situation, the old man.

"Well, I don't really know of anything that will do the trick. We have vibrating dildos, special attachments, and so on, but I don't know of anything that will keep her occupied for weeks, except …" said the old man, and then he stopped.

"Except what?" asked the businessman.

"Nothing, nothing," said the old man.

"C'mon, tell me! I need something!" protested the businessman.

"Well, sir, I don't usually mention this, but there is the 'voodoo dick,'" the old man said.

"So what's up with this voodoo dick?" the businessman asked.

The old man reached under the counter, and pulled out an old wooden box carved with strange symbols. He opened it, and there lay a very ordinary-looking dildo. The businessman laughed, and said, "Big fucking deal. It looks like every other dildo in this shop!"

The old man said, "But you haven't seen what it'll do yet."

He pointed to a door and said "Voodoo dick, the door."

The voodoo dick rose out of its box, darted over to the door, and started screwing the keyhole. The whole door shook with the vibrations, and a crack developed down the middle. Before the door could split, the old man said, "Voodoo dick, get back in your box!"

The voodoo dick stopped, floated back to the box and lay there, quiescent once more.

The businessman said, "I'll take it!"

The old man resisted and said it wasn't for sale, but he finally surrendered to $700 in cash. The guy took it home to his wife, told her it was a special dildo and that to use it, all she had to do was say, "Voodoo dick, my pussy."

He left for his trip satisfied things would be fine while he was gone.

After he'd been gone a few days, the wife was unbearably horny. She thought of several people who would willingly satisfy her, but then she remembered the voodoo dick. She got it out, and said "Voodoo dick, my pussy!" The voodoo dick shot to her crotch and started pumping. It was great, like nothing she'd ever experienced before.

After three orgasms, she decided she'd had enough, and tried to pull it out, but it was stuck in her, still thrusting. She tried and tried to get it out, but nothing worked. Her husband had forgot to tell her how to shut it off. So she decided to go to the hospital to see if they could help. She put her clothes on, got in the car and started to drive to the hospital, quivering with every thrust of the dildo. On the way, another orgasm nearly made her swerve off the road, and she was pulled over by a policeman. He asked for her license, and then asked how much she'd had to drink. Gasping and twitching, she explained that she hadn't been drinking, but that a voodoo dick was stuck in her pussy, and wouldn't stop screwing.

The officer looked at her for a second, and then said, "Yea, right. Voodoo dick, my ass!"

Yikes. They still make 60 Hz HDTVs? Seeing this thread made me double check the date of the posting. Are you sure you don't want a 240 Hz TV? Because I can totally see a "So, I want a 240hz TV" thread next year.

You won't be saying that when the programming is optimized for 240. The 120 will start to look plain.

If you can't tell, that's great. The only noticeable difference is during the scenes with a lot of movement, and it's quite irritating to see scenes chopping away.

well shopping around it doesnt look like it is happening this year. not the end of the world and I am still going to look, just not as hard.

ideally I only want to spend 2-3 hundred on it after selling the TV i'm currently using for my games/movies. So that puts me in a 400-500 dollar price range which probably isnt going to happen. actually got laughed at by a salesman yesterday when i told him what I was looking for. but fuck him, that local company is going out of business but they aren't going to sell their 32" 120hz TVs for 800 bucks when i could goto walmart and get a 47" visio 120hz for the same price

Interesting sales technique. You'd think a more savvy approach would be to not make fun of the customer.

Belittle them, make them insecure, defenses drop down, and then go for the kill. It's a great confidence booster once the consumer has bought the product and made the right choice.

Jon, if you are not much of a tv/film watcher, but enjoy sports and gaming more, a 120hz tv wouldn't be a bad investment. Saving your money is an even better investment, though.

oh yea but the way we have our budget setup we can splurge part of our refunds on ourselves

like i said, the price has to be right for me. The TV im using now is old but does 720p fine and I still have my surround sound going through that TV's headphone jack. So there is no rush (like with that computer), I just wanted opinions.

You can always finance it and consider the down payment the splurge and pay it off later with non-splurge income.

120Hz feature literally just doubles the refreshment rate, thus helping to decrease the ammount of blurr or motion judder seen on LCD tv's. Comparing a 120Hz LCD with a 60Hz LCD side by side, even with a source with alot of motion, you will be able to notice very little difference.

What you might have been seeing at Walmart was a type of feature usually associated or advertised alongside 120hz. One company calls it "Automotion Plus" while other companies call it some other gimmicky name. Simplist way to describe this feature is that it makes things POP more and produce more of a 3D-like image. I don't know how it does this, but I do know that some like it, and others hate it. To me personally it looks too processed and unnatural. I also notice more artifacts with this feature turned on than on the same LCD with the feature turned off.

Onto the 240Hz topic, once again this, along with 120Hz is separate from the "automotion plus" feature though they are usually advertised alongside eachother. Therefore I really wouldn't recommend jumping up and paying a tonne more for 240Hz when that image enhancement feature you noticed look practically the same on each set.

In my opinion 120/240 Hz is overated feature as most customers don't really know what it does and what they're seeing. If they really knew what it did, and there was still so much excitement over the feature, then they would be absolute idiots for not at least thinking about plasma instead of LCD. I used to have a 120Hz higher end LCD and upgraded to a mid-end plasma and will probably never buy an LCD ever again.

Most people like 120Hz and recomend it to theirs friends due to the motion processing feature, which literally has nothing to do with 120Hz or 240Hz.

Automotion plus is a feature that tries to create more frames and smooth out motion, but it can cause horrible artifacts. Many people say that it causes movies to look more like a soap opera or a video from a handheld camera. It can be turned on or off, although the tv will always be running in 120hz/240Hz.
