Censorship: When do we finally stop dangerous media?

Wed Jul 08, 2009 11:59 am

We all like "free speech", but where do we draw the line? Why do we allow blatantly dangerous things to continue to harm us and our children without holding them accountable?

Once media becomes dangerous and hurts/kills people we have to stop ignoring them and start taking action. Be it Counter-Strike causing the Virgina Tech shootings, DOOM causing Columbine, Bill O'Reilly causing murders of women's doctors, Glenn Beck causing shootings of Holocaust Museums and attempts on our President, Rush Limbaugh causing America to fail and racism, Wrestling causing kids to get killed or injured imitating the moves, countless sports figures causing our kids to take steroids and drugs, and the Grand Theft Auto raising a new generation of hooker murdering perverts. Not to even mention rap. Media is out of control and killing people.

Clearly the government needs to stop being lax in enforcing standards, especially against offensive and dangerous media. And companies need to start being held accountable not just civilly but criminally when they cause this harm through their media. When some kid shoots up his school, not just him, and the gun manufacturers need to be thrown in jail and their assets seized but companies like Sony need to be also punished for the gritty realism of Killzone 2 encouraging this kid to murder the "Helghast" (aka, his fellow students) at his school. When a women's doctor is assassinated, it's not enough to punish the assassin, those who incited the violence by condemning doctors of women need to also be.

We all need to stand against the rising tide of bodies slaughtered by the out of control media. How many more need to die?

Love your rant. I'm AN animal that enjoys ants as part of its daily diet!

Censorship by Jae.

Edit: Due to complaints made by viewing parties, the word "rant" and references to animal cannibalism must be removed. The sentence shall now read "Love your post. I'm an animal".

Love, The NLSC Censorship Committee.

It's not media that is causing this, it's stupid people. If it is a problem you want to see fixed, we need to get rid of them and not censor things.

Censor the stupid people so we can get back to not censoring anything?

Teaching the ignorant how to understand their feelings would solve a lot.

Videogames-there are much violent games out there. Kids/adults play them. In some point they are good to "potential killers" because they can "kill" in real life. And i think porn is also good in some point ,you can watch them in home, instead of unprotected sex.

Free speech: discretion is strongly advised and correlation does not mean causation!

Relating to the NLSC... I think some people shouldn't be banned for saying stupid, annoying shit since they actually spark longer discussions, create joke material, and potentially cause spin-off threads. Otherwise, this place is dry like shadowgrin's vagina. People like puttincomputers and vinceair make this possible.

See what I mean?

Porn's also bad as it will give a new generation of repressed Catholics an addiction, ideological clashes and unrealistic physical standards that would cause problems in marriage.

War doesn't kill people. Four letter words do.

We can't afford to do nothing. If dangerous media isn't stopped now, the deaths will be on the hands of all those who did nothing to stop them.

We don't allow cigarette ads on TV, and we put weak warnings describing potential effects of smoking. Why don't we label video games, and violent movies the same way? "THIS GAME MAY TURN YOUR CHILD INTO A MURDERER!" It's obvious that media causes people to do things, that's why we banned Joe Camel, that's why we have broadcasting standards.

The problem is, it doesn't go far enough, and doesn't cover broad enough. A law banning minors from buying violent video games. Excellent. But what's stopping them from getting from an older friend? Or seeing coverage of the game on the internet? Or television? The hateful dangerous ideas can still seep into them.

If people weren't aware of these things, they wouldn't even think about doing the terrible acts.

It's like fast food. If we didn't allow them to advertise, and only allowed reports on how dangerous it is, millions of lives would be saved every year from obesity and heart disease. Instead we do nothing. Their blood is on our hands.

Porn is a good example, it causes people to treat women improperly and also teaches that rape is okay. There's also a lot of racism in it. Yet we have no problem with it, and some sinners are encouraging it. Even though a lot of it is unprotected, which just encourages more unprotected sex!

Heck, at least we tax cigarettes and alcohol. We should tax all goods/media based on the amount of dangerous content within. (As decided by a fair and objective government council.) That way when someone is murdered due to the hateful ideology of Bill O'Reilly, this tax fund can pay out to the victims along with O'Reilly going to jail. (Along with his assets seized to help pay more.) Or when mass murders are simulating their rampage in a DOOM custom map, id will have already paid reparations for each sale of their game. (On top of them also going to jail and their assets seized.)

We hold Hitler accountable for the acts of the Holocaust even though it was just his ideas and influences. When children die trying to replicate wrestling moves, the least we can do is hold the WWE and the like accountable.

A lot of people go down the right path by wanting to get rid of dangerous tools like guns, cars, etc. It's time to get rid of dangerous ideas.

We no longer have the option to do nothing.

Oh. I wasn't really sure if I remember what I typed, and I remember it was a pretty dumb post so I wouldn't be surprised if it warranted editing.

Kids have been playing cops and robbers and cowboys and indians for centuries.
