Any hardcore fans?

Postby J@3 on Sat Jun 13, 2009 1:52 am

Anyone into hardcore/post-hardcore music? I wasn't such a huge fan originally but I've been converted pretty quickly, some bands to check out (alphabetical)

Abandon All Hope
As I Lay Dying
August Burns Red
Between The Buried And Me
Bleeding Through
Born Of Osiris
Burden Of A Day
Bury Your Dead
Carpathian
Comeback Kid
Confession
Deez Nuts
Destroy The Runner
Drop Dead, Gorgeous
Emmure
Gwen Stacy
Haste The Day
Her Nightmare
Here I Come Falling
HORSE the band
I Killed The Prom Queen
In Flames
In Trenches
Mychildren, Mybride
On Broken Wings
Parkway Drive
Picture The End
The Red Shore
Refused
Still Remains
Terror
Throwdown
Wish For Wings

Some of those are more well known than others. If I had to do a top five, it'd go..

1: Wish For Wings
2: August Burns Red
3: Deez Nuts
4: Carpathian
5: Abandon All Hope

Any other recommendations?

Well the only other band I heard that was "post hardcore" (whatever the hell that means, I'm clueless when it comes to music genres) is Alexisonfire. They're pretty popular here in Canada, but other than that I'm pretty unexposed to the genre. I guess "post hardcore" its just another thing to wiki up on when I have some spare time.

I like In Flames especially Cloud Connected. And I still have that song you sent me a couple of years back from Alexisonfire (if they count that is) but that's pretty much the only thing I know. Too many subgenres of Rock/Metal to keep up.

I was very much into it a few years ago before I realized that, like many rock sub-genres before, there were literally 50,000 bands doing the exact same thing, based on the exact same influence. This really encouraged me to look deeper, in order to find more eclectic bands that are not as easy to categorize, and that are more extreme in whatever approach they chose.

Even though it's still just labels and etiquettes in the end, your list seems more metalcore than post-hardcore. Post-hardcore is usually more assimilated to "screamo", which would be more bands like A Static Lullaby, Underoath, Emery, Dead Poetic, Alexisonfire,...and the zillion others that sound exactly the same. Still, if you're looking for a few more of those, Life In Your Way and also Lower Definition are fairly good.

Between The Buried And Me is one of my favorite bands and I certainly wouldn't include them in this list, they're just on a level of their own, and more metal driven than hardcore I would say.
Also, Refused are pretty much the inventors of mid/late 90's modern hardcore (as opposed old school NYC hardcore), they're kind of in their own category too. They were such precursors, you can hear strong similarities to their music with pretty much any post-hardcore band out there.

Yeah I think I mentioned post-hardcore initially, I don't explain it quite so technically I just basically say "if it's got more singing than screaming it's post-hardcore". In Flames technically aren't hardcore, I think they're considered melodic death metal... Still Remains are more pop-metal now, Deez Nuts is bordering on rap-metal.

Even though there are new bands like that popping up all over the place everyday, it seems like most of them have a fairly short life span. When you got so many bands in the same niche, you'll always have a few that do it better than the others and manage to sell much more (like As I Lay Dying for example), and the rest just releases one or two CDs, tours for a couple of years before facing the harsh reality of this industry and calling it quits.

But you also have those bands that decided quite early to change their whole approach while still retaining the heaviness and melodies, and not just incorporating a few things here and there to try to stand out. In that aspect, I'd mention He Is Legend, which have always blurred the lines and opted for more of a Southern rock/metal kind of sound a couple of years ago; Poison The Well, who worked with Refused's famous duo of Swedish producers to go for a more post-punk kind of style, also with a Southern rock vibe at times; or In Reverent Fear, who were pretty much a heavier version of Glassjaw (another precursor for post-hardcore) at first, but then went for a Dredg/Codeseven-style of melodic and progressive rock.
Oh, and also The Dear Hunter, led by The Receiving End Of Sirens' former vocalist. They probably listened to lots of Muse and went for a very daring, Mars Volta-esque, kind of post-rock. They seem to have inspired quite a few other bands, like Forgive Durden. I think that's gonna become one of the next trendy rock styles, where the musicians try to incorporate as many instruments as possible to sound like a real "band" in its traditional "orchestra" meaning.
My .02

That's an interesting point actually. I think there's a definite trend towards more orchestral sounds, although annoyingly the orchestras tend to be mostly synthetic which is a bit irritating... Cradle Of Filth I'm looking at you. I've noticed within most "hardcore" music a swing towards more, I guess pop vocals you'd call it. The screaming seems to take its toll on the singers after a few albums and they're forced to change, Atreyu and Still Remains comes to mind there.

Exactly. And even though some of these bands have managed to sell very well while still being heavier than the mainstream rock and metal you hear on the radio, it obviously opens them more doors when they ease off the screaming and go for a more melodic, stadium-filling metal style. Atreyu would definitely be up there.
The record companies are certainly to blame here (well, as far as I'm concerned at least). It's understandable that the bands choose this direction, they all want to trade their old smelly ass van for a nice little tour bus, they all want to come back home not having to wonder how they'll pay the bills...But you can't help feeling let down as a fan at times.
Creative bands that can afford to have the freedom to do whatever they want are quite rare these days...I don't know, Queens of The Stone Age, Tool or even Pearl Jam come to mind.

Since Blaqk Audio I've moved away from it. Like completely. Especially since the recent albums of a ton of the bands (actually, most bands, every follow up released in 2008 was almost always crap) have been epic letdowns.

Jae, you need to go back through the Music Reccomendation thread for my posts. Ignore the obvious hasty decision ones. (People in Planes)

I thought "Pressure the Hinges" was easily Haste the Day's best. It seems so far above the other three.

I like When Everything Falls personally... All I Have, Bleed Alone, When Everything Falls, Long Way Down, all good tracks. They are terrible live however.

I've currently got 36 downloads going, all bands I've never heard before. Once I sort through that mess I'll trawl through the music thread.
