Needs Tips on how to cut around

how to do a cut-out clean.
I am doing some logos and some player portraits and want to know how do you guys make the cut outs so clean around the edges without a background? I want them to look professional, and can't seem to get that ultra clean look, with out little bits still showing around the image.

And tips? What tools and setings for those tools do you use?
