Government Stimulus Money: BILLIONS? TRILLIONS?

Thu Feb 19, 2009 11:02 pm

Besides tax cuts and mortgage assistance, is there any other way to get the money in the hands of the people, instead of businesses? …without causing inflation…your thoughts?

Theoretically yes, increase aggregate supply (long term and short term) at the same rate as aggregate demand increases. Problem is, government of a free market country don't have tools to control aggregate supply. You give people more money, they'll spend, increasing demand while supply stays the same.

Luckily, the US isn't a free market country.

This question makes no sense. If people are allowed to keep more of their money, they will spend some of it and save the rest (for most people in banks), so the money will go to businesses, who will give the money back to people as pay after investment. If the government takes money from some people and then uses it in a mortgage assistance program, it's going to businesses.

The government spending and tax credits aren't "stimulus" it's just another vote buying and lobbyist repayment program.

Don't worry though, when we're all poor, we'll be easier to please.

With this trillion dollar stimulus, do you think we will see the economy strengthen quickly. Technology is way too strong right now, and the wheels are turning fast. I can't imagine this thing crashing...that wouldn't make sense at all.

It would make perfect sense: when was the last time people in washington acted like they knew what they were doing and understood longterm repercussions of things?

Do you guys think inflation would be a problem? Give every tax payer over $10,000. Make a law that won't allow businesses to raise the prices on products past a certain point!

You give every taxpayer 10,000 dollars? Do you understand the basic concepts that run things like an economy? I only have a basic knowledge but still. Some people pay more taxes than others, some people pay less. 1 flat rate for all wont make anyone happy. Some people (although less now) could reach into their ass and pull out 10,000. while for some: thats more than they've ever had at a time or will ever have. But anyway 2 things happen if you give 10k to everyone
1. People dont spend they save it for a "rainy day" because people are scared to spend currently. Part of the vicious cycle of a bad economy.
2. They use it on something that wont go back into the system...something illegal. I know some people who used their last refund check on drugs.

The third and much smaller percentage of the people currently may go "spend" but thats too big a risk to take. Also: where is that money going to come from? You think government employees or any particular industry is going to take a pay cut for that?

No, no, no, no, you don't get it illini. We can just take from the "super rich", and if we have to keep defining "super rich" down so be it. And worst comes to worst, we can just print more money! The government has assured me there is no downside to that. You need to stop worrying so much about the effects of "democracy" in a system where more than half the people get more from the state than they put in while keeping their voting power. When times are bad we can just vote ourselves more from the people who have. Democracy! The rule of law is whatever a majority says it is!

You should tell Congress and the President about this before they send out more one-time rebates instead of cutting the rates and reforming the system. Oh, whoops, too late. Nobody wants to read those long boring bills anyway...

Yeah, that worked so well in the 1970s.

And I must have missed that whole "Congress has the power to decide prices" line in the Constitution.

The money will come from the bailout money. No one should have to take a pay cut...

The bailout money has to come from somewhere.

What happened to the concept of printing money? You can print money and create value through hard work over time...

The money we print has no value if we do not have the resources to back it up...printing it means nothing....

DrGonzo, the value is in people working. We know people will work. More money, more confidence. There is nothing wrong with printing money to stimulate things quickly and properously! We know people will get up and work!

Prove it. People are lazy: always have been, always will be. Printing money does nothing, you must not understand how economies work. There must be RESOURCES (better than the "hope" of work) such as gold or other liquid assets to backup the money. Money is a relative measure, not an absolute. Therefore, if we print a shit ton of money that doesnt have any backing, we lower the value of the dollar even more so than it already is.

Re: Government Stimulus Money: BILLIONS? TRILLIONS?

No, the US dollar hasn't been backed by gold in a while, now. Printing alot of money doesn't lower the value unless there isn't a sufficient demand for it.
