Describe you on the court.

Wed Nov 26, 2008 5:40 pm

I'm making this thread considering many of us play basketball, but no-one knows how everyone plays. So I'm asking the question, what's your style of play? Can you dunk? Can you shoot? What makes you the player you are. Give your strength's/weakness'.

Strengths
Good mid-range shot, very consistent from 12-18 feet.
I can create shots for myself, which is something I couldn't do before.
Good on-ball defense, I know how to apply pressure on the person I'm guarding.
Great at getting blocks and steals, have a good idea of where the ball is going.
Relentless when going after rebounds, I don't let size make a difference and I box out.
Not a selfish player at all, look to create shots for my teammates before myself.
Excellent at little floater shots
Can use both hands to dribble or lay the ball in.
Now a better fade away shooter, and shooting while I'm on the move.
Use moves such as pump fakes, stutter steps, hop steps to score.

Weaknesses
I am a slow runner, once a quick person gets past me they have an open lane.
I am a very inconsistent three point shooter, if I'm slumping its near impossible for me to get out.
Miss easy lay-ups at times
I foul a lot while I'm playing defense, mostly small ones like slapping of the hands/wrist.
I work horribly on a fast pace offense.
I'm only 5'9", so when I play at certain colleges I usually give up size.
I play like A big man, but I don't have the height.
My handles get sloppy at times.
I can't dunk. Not even at 9 feet now, about a year ago those were gimme's.
I am extremely out of shape now, so I'm completely out of rhythm.

You could think of me as a poor man's Jason Kidd / Dirk Nowitzki.

Strengths
Excellent mid-range shot, between the arc and the key.
Excellent spot-up shooter.
Excellent free-throw percentage.
Good on-ball defense.
Good at getting steals, and playing the passing lanes.
Unselfish player. I actually only shoot if I need to, otherwise I find an open man.
Pretty good rainbow floater.
A good sideaway shooter, working on my Nowitzki-1foot-fadeaway shots.
Excellent runner, good on the fast break.

Weaknesses
No 3PT shooting skills, whatsoever. I really need to work on my strength.
I'm only 5'4, so I get blocked really easily. Hence, the rainbow floater.
I need to work on using my left hand and left side more, as I'm right handed.

We have pretty similar skills, Doobie. I am also 5'9", too.

Sometimes I am too unselfish and don't take shots when I should.
Very good at lead passing, especially with bounce passes and lobs for a player who is taking off on a fast break.
I am a streaky shooter, excellent from mid range, though.
Had a characteristic to throw the ball through the hoop from 50 or so feet after bullshit fouls that were called on me. Ball never lies.
Had a signature style perimeter defense. Real lockdown stuff. I'm talking about pinning the ball on crossovers. Basically tried to make the ballhandler not want the ball while I was guarding him.

When I started playing competitively, I still had a lot of work to do with my offensive game. I'd already found that out when I tried out for the school team earlier in the year. I hadn't been doing too badly in schoolyard games amongst my friends up until that point but against more experienced and enthusiastic players, I found I was far from polished offensively. To that end, I was more of a defensive player when I started, getting a lot of rebounds, blocking shots and mostly scoring on garbage points. Sometimes I'd look for my own shot but mostly I'd only score when opportunity presented itself rather than really being able to create for myself. I got better though and in time I was scoring more regularly driving and posting up.

With a bit of help from a dirty player, I suffered a badly sprained ankle my second year of playing organised ball and coming back from that injury, I was a bit more reluctant than before to attack the basket. The positive thing about that though was that I developed a three point shot, so for the rest of my time in the junior leagues I had a bit of a Dirk Nowitzki-type game offensively, pulling up for threes but also putting the ball on the floor and still playing in the post a fair bit. I was always a bit shaky from midrange though, I preferred to either take the three or get within ten feet.

I wasn't really able to pursue basketball beyond the junior leagues as I stopped growing at 6'4" and having been one of the taller kids during my teens and during my time in the local comp, I mostly played centre and while I can handle the ball reasonably well, to the point where it would be adequate if I were big enough to play the centre or power forward at a higher level, my skills definitely aren't strong enough to play guard so there was no chance of me taking it any further. Someday I might get back into a social league, unfortunately there seems to be a lot of dirty players in the open age comps here. I don't mind physical play but there's a lot of ankle kickers and Bruce Bowen-like antics going on.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Wed Nov 26, 2008 9:59 pm

Strengths:
Ball handling skills
Love to pass the ball
Speed(if compare to guys, that i play with)
Post moves
Ability to drive to the rim
And my strongest ability is clutch shooting, i don't know why, but when i dribble to the rim i always perform layups and shots, that i hardly make in practice, so in clutch situations i play good
My post defence (i make a 3-4 blocks every game) and low defence
Not too short (6'1", 200 pounds)
i'm more like D-wade type of player in his youth, a LOT of defence (i just love it), a LOT of dribbles to the rim (back in the day i was scared to dribble to the rim, so i had to fight with my fear, so now i can do it against almost anyone i play against) and a LOT of assists (just love to make plays)

Weaknesses:
I shoot very inconsistent from midrange and 3pts, but recently i develop my jumpshot and right positioning of my hands, so all i need is practice, but have no time, tho
Very low vertical (45 santimeters)
A LOT of fauls while defending an opponent

well that's my main charactiristics! in fact i could say that i'm not great player by myself! but i shine when it comes to playing 2 on 2, 3 on 3

You definitely should, I did & it's worth it. Good exercise, & good to light up the younger guys for 20pts  The social comp I play in isn't that dirty. You'll get your occasional dirty players though. Although I don't probably get targeted much as I'm a pretty big guy myself. I have heard that some of the more suburban leagues (I'm in city one at Auchenflower - Bullets' old stomping ground) are a lot dirtier, but best to stick clear of those. I actually find the old guys (40's to 50's) are the dirtiest players for whatever reason, so I just give it back to them at times

Anyways, I'd call myself an Andrea Bargnani/Matt Harpring type player....I'm about 6'2" & 240lbs....perhaps Will/Sit/Fresh can shed some light on my game if he passes through here....

Re: Describe you on the court.

Wed Nov 26, 2008 11:36 pm

Strengths

- Excellent three point shooter
- Good mid-range shooter
- Excellent freethrow shooter
- Unselfish, quite often I'm too unselfish and tends to pass the ball when I should take the shot
- Good perimeter defense
- Good fastbreak runner
- Good offensive rebounder
- Clutch shooter
- Have the ability to get to the rim
- Can lays it in with both hands
- High percentage at hook shots and floaters
- Always work hard on both ends of the court, on offense I'll always cut and move without the ball
- Can get 3-4 blocks per game

Weaknesses

- Not a consistent defensive rebounder despite being 6'0 tall
- Bad passes results in turnovers
- Bad at stealing and interceptions
- Low stamina
- Not a good jump shooter, I'm more like the Brent Barry type
- Slow hands, cant get steals when I should easily be able to
- Bad 1-on-1 defender
- Short hangtime
- I say whatever I feel like saying when I'm on the court, this includes swearing and telling off stupid teammates

Strengths:
I rule. Flat out.

Weaknesses:
Huh?

P.S.: MJ ain't got shit on me. I'd serve him so bad his mustache would fall off.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Thu Nov 27, 2008 1:37 am

Strengths:
-I play the same whether my team is up 20 or down 20. I never care about the scoreboard and try to keep my team in it no matter how ugly the game is
-never giving up on any play. I miss a pass or get picked out i work my ass off to over come it.
-Speed-only 2 or 3 people in my conference are as fast as me.
-Passing. If a big man sets up down low and puts a hand up: i can lay it in his hand. If someone sets up on the perimeter and is left open: it's a guaranteed assist
-Toughness. I'm one of the smallest guys out there but I'll take on anybody on any play.
-Fast Breaks-I can pretty much always at least give an outlet pass when the teams in trouble with the speed if not get an open layup
-picks-I can get defenders pressing our big men off of them so we can play our game
Weaknesses
-Handles: although much better than they used to be i'm still not as reliable with the ball as i would like to be.
-inconsistent shooting-sometimes i'll hit everything from off balance to perfect long range shots: other days i cant make easy layups
-Speed control: sometimes i outrun myself and end up shooting my layups too late or outrunning the pass.
-size-being as small as I am: if i get stuck down low, there is no other word than "fucked'
-occasionally when frustrated get selfish trying to get out of my slump and shoot things that i should wait on.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:29 pm

I cant dribble, I only have one post up move and that is a Aldridge type sissy fadeaway. I am a descent passer when it comes to finding open man inside.
I get some blocks, i play descent def on perimeter

Yeah it's tempting, I'd like to get a few friends together and play socially but unfortunately I'm the only one who's into basketball and I've lost contact with the guys I used to play with in the junior comp (I believe some of them have actually moved away, too). It's the players that target ankles that really put me off because I've had my share of bad sprains and there's no place for that. Like I said, I don't mind the physical play but anyone who's out to injure people or start brawls, there's no need for that.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Thu Nov 27, 2008 9:37 pm

Andrew, I've never seen players target ankles. Can't believe anybody would do that to tell you the truth. As for how I started up the 'Fighting Irish', well I got back into social basketball, then my sister's boyfriend started up. Then one day, we both starting talking along with my older brother, & we started the team. Two of my old school friends who were into bball back in mid-90's were keen. So I got some jerseys together & signed us up. We sucked big time & lost a few games by 40-50pts. The thing was I was only bball player on the team. And most games we would only have 4-5 players. The other guys on team either had never played basketball or hadn't played in over a decade. The trick is to find people who just want a social, team activity. The same type of people that wouldn't mind playing indoor soccer, indoor cricket, touch football or so on are the ones that would play. Anyways, after frustrating first season, we needed a break, & 6 months later, I put the team into a different competition closer to the city as I had moved. Two of my high school friends quit the team, meaning we had 3 players, but I recruited Sit who has played before, my wife's brother who is a soccer player & never played bball, & one other random who would later quit the team. Eventually Sit brought in another couple of players. We cycled through lots of players & went through the non-dedicated ones. All up, I think the Fighting Irish has had about 30 different people wear its great uniform, & the legacy will continue next year. If you ever move to Brisbane, I'll find a spot on the team for you

But yep, back on topic

Strengths:
- Good 3 point shooter out to NBA range
- Not afraid to keep shooting & playing through cold slumps, trying to help team in other ways
- Pretty good offensive rebounder, especially off own shots
- Solid handle & passing
- Good bball IQ
- Solid positional defender

Weaknesses:
- Lacks good footspeed
- Not going to be confused with an Olympic athlete
- Poor stamina
- Poor shotblocker
- Tends to fall in love with outside shot

NBA Comparison: Andrea Bargnani meets Matt Harpring

Re: Describe you on the court.

Thu Nov 27, 2008 9:47 pm

Careful, I might just take you up on that. ;)

There's probably not that many really but it's happened to me a few times and when it happened to me again playing in the open comp, I decided to give it up. It's real Bruce Bowen stuff, kicking out at people or sweeping under people's feet when they're landing.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:11 am

Strengths:
-very good stamina (hope that´s the correct word) I can run all the time and I do it to get open
-good midrange game, able to create room and get a shoot off and mostly make it
-good court vision and Basketball IQ
-good defense, rebounding and blocking

Weaknesses:
-strength, I´m like Kevin Martin -30% of muscle (I´m 1.96m and 75kg)
-bad 3 pointer shooter
-bad post defender
-not so comfortable with my dribble

Re: Describe you on the court.

Sat Nov 29, 2008 8:51 pm

Strengths
-Good ball handler. Rarely loose the ball.
-Good 3 point shooter.
-Great court vision. Can make passes out of nothing.
-Large 2/3 man, for my age.
-Can make And 1 plays.

Weaknesses
-I'm overweight. Which means low stamina(Gonna start cardio training during the summer).
-Poor freethrow shooter. If i take like 5-6 a game, I would only make 2-3.
-Underaverage mid-range shooter.
-Lazy at times. Fail to help out at defense, don't stay in front of my man.
-Gamble a lot on defense.
-Bad clutch player.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Sun Dec 07, 2008 4:57 am

My skills 2008:

I am as good as Stephon Marbury. I could be on the IR and earn a lot of money like him. I could also stay away from the Knicks´ practice well, too. I have never seen the Knicks gym for ... all my life.

My skills when I used to play basketball 10-15 years ago:

I was taller than other pupils in school and rejected many shots.
Others kept growing while I remained at 6' 3'', that's why my blocking and rebounding "dominance" vanished. At the age of 17 others were as tall as I am but were stronger and I could not get as many rebounds as years ago.

+ Rebouding
+ Shot blocking
+ Good jump shot, although I only played for fun and not in a real basketball team

- Horrible ball handling
- Limited passing skills

I could only go for rebounds and blocks or get the ball and take shots. I could not play 1-1 due to my lack of dribbling skills.

Re: Describe you on the court.

Sun Dec 07, 2008 7:47 am

Strengths

-Really good ball-handler
-fast runner
-driving to the rim
-quite often I hit some ridiculous shots
-good shot blocking
-very physical
-very high vertical/I'm 5'11 and I can really dunk strong, if I grow, hopefully I could do windmills

Weaknesses

-Quite unselfish
-not exactly a three-point threat
-I make many fouls
-I'm a big sucker, I get up on many pump fakes
-As I have a really competitive spirit, sometimes I over-react and get a technical
-Rebounds/I have a big vert but I just can't rebound
-Currently I can't run much

Something about my basketball life

I'm only 14 so there is a lot of time to improve. I like to tease on the court when I block shots or make a dunk. Never in my life I was a shooter, but I can have my nights. I easily block shots due to my long arms and a great vertical leap. I played for a minor club where I stared as a guard. Due to my bad grades, I can't play anymore. My friends tell my I am really an exciting player to watch. when on fast break I know how to dunk, 1-on-1 I always get past the player either with my fast foot work which sends the defender in the wrong side, or with my strength. I have a really big fear of getting blocked, so when I get up and see a hand higher than mine I get all chickened out and miss the shot. I don't like to someone, and I suck at jumpers. Due to my selfishness on the court some guys hate my, but when I play with my friends its just fun and trying crazy things. Last week my school was 1st on a city tournament of 8 schools and I was the best defensive player. I shot decent, while really breaking a guys ankles, when I did it I started showing off so I was fouled. I really need to work on my discipline. I haven't played competitive basketball for about 6 months if we don't count the city tournament. My grades are a little better, should I try to get back on the basketball team?

I'm like a Bruce Bowen but without the defensive ability.

I'm a player like Manute Bol but without the height.

I'm a bit similar to a Kyle Korver but without the shooting stroke.

I'm also comparable to like a Reggie Evans but without the rebounding ability.

Or like a Stephon Marbury without the selfishness.

I'm like a LeBron James but without the passing ability, rebounding ability, scoring ability, extreme vertical jump, court vision, strength, grace, quickness, ability to finish, charisma, amazing dunks, body control, leadership, composure, speed, clutch, anticipation, versatility, ability to get to the FT line and ball handling ability.

X pretty much covered it all about himself in his post. I would say his biggest strength is his shooting touch from all over the floor. He is great on the offensive boards; surprising for his size/athleticism... literally goes slow-motion and I don't know how he can do it and still get off a good shot. Skillwise, I would say he's at least average (Or close to) everywhere across the board. If he improves his fitness, he would be great. Main thing is he is consistent.

So right back at you X. :P

phpBB [video]

Watch the big guy in the light blue shirt.

Yea he is getting dunked on a whole lot but his mannerisms, look, and build is oddly similar to me right now. He goes for a lot of blocks that he has no right attempting, alot like me.

In my "prime" (6'6" 220lbs) I would describe me like this

Offense:
A lot of picks
Nice touch down low
More finesse than power
Great passing
Quick putbacks on O-Boards

Defense:
Slow in open court
Great post defender
Great Shot Blocker
Great D-Rebounder
Quick Hands

And for now, judging my the games I played during the summer (~300lbs for the sake of rounding off)

Offense:
Outside shooter
Rarely drives in the 1v1
Power Post player
Relies on size for position
Many Screens
Still a good passer out of or into the post

Defense:
Slow to respond for help D
good hands
boxes out well
football player

With the games I played during the summer, I definitely changed my game up from a quicker finesse player to a power gtfo my way player
