Your worst injuries

Postby Andrew on Thu Nov 06, 2008 6:32 pm

What are some of your worst injuries (or illnesses)?

So far, I've been fortunate enough to never break or fracture any bones but I've had a fair few ankle sprains, at least four while I was playing basketball competitively in the local junior leagues and a few more as a result of some unfortunate mishaps while my mates and I have been out on the town. Nothing too serious in terms of badly torn ligaments (though I do have some ligament damage) but as anyone who's sprained an ankle or another joint knows, it's not particularly fun especially during the first couple of days of a bad sprain.

My worst injury though happened when I was four, at a local beach. I ran out into the water and stepped on a broken bottle, severing tendons in my foot. Fortunately I don't remember too much about it but what I do recall isn't particularly pleasant. Fortunately, surgery was able to put everything right and I don't really suffer any lasting effects from it.

The worst pain I've ever been in aside from that though would be from a couple of gout attacks I had this year, which caught me offguard as I figured I was too young at 24 to suffer from that but apparently my brother (who just turned 40 this year) has been suffering from it from the time he was my age. I control it with medication so now it doesn't bother me but when it flared up earlier this year I was in agony. Although the joint swells up like a sprain, it doesn't matter if you ice it, the pain won't go away without anti-inflammatories and as far as pain management goes, neither icing nor heat nor any over-the-counter painkillers will touch it. There are other health risks with gout but the pain alone is enough for you to seek treatment and take care of yourself.

Usually running around when I was a kid, I'd usually get bumps and scrapes most of the time. Sometimes, runninng towards clotheslines. Lol, the worst i could remember was tripping and running most of my arm through concrete and having a huge scrape all over my arm near middle.

The most recent I could remember was spraining my ankle from a band landing after a layup while just playing around. Funny thing was it was after the game and we were just playing around. It was probably coz I was wearing sneakers and not proper basketball shoes.

Luckily I too have never broken any bones.
A few years ago we where playing a rebounding game at school using a volleyball and a basketball backboard for Sport, and as I went up to rebound the ball someone shoulder slammed into the middle of my back. Because of this I had mild whiplash, which bloody hurts, meaning I could hardly walk for a week.
About 16 months ago which playing soccer for Sport, two kids in my grade thought it would be hilarious to table top me. Incase some of you dont know, this is when 1 person kneels behind the victum, and the 2nd person pushes the victim, making them lose balance, and fall over the person kneeling, and landing on your bum.
But for some reason, the person kneeling started to stand up while I was falling over and making contact with him. This resulted in my feet being in the air, and me landing all my weight on my lower neck, in the middle of your shoulders. Because of this, I some how tore a muscle in my back near my kidneys. This is the worst injury I've had, because it hurt to move my neck, shoulders, back, legs. Every single everyday activity was made extremely hard because of my injury for about 2 or more weeks. It even hurt to piss or take a crap
This year I did my ankle twice playing basketball. First game of our season, I badly sprained my ankle and was on crutches for a few days. When I was finally ready to play basketball again, in the last 5 seconds of a match, I shot a 3pointer, and the defender did a Bruce Bowen on me, by putting their feet under my landing area, and a sprained the same ankle again :|
But I haven't had any injuries in the last few months, and hopefully it stays like that.

Mine have to be my various (some embarrassing) sport injuries.

First, in 10th grade, in a rebounding drill my coaches were looking for effort on the long rebounds. So when it was my turn in the drill, the ball was infront of the other kid who I was behind. I dont remember if I tripped or dove for it, but I fell and took out the kids back legs. I hit my head against our awesome rubber floor, started to get up, then he pretty much butt slammed my head back into the ground giving me a severe concussion. And I continued to finish practice.

In 11th grade, playing doubles badmitten in gym, I thought I'd be a smart ass and play up front, seeing as I am tall and can act like a wall for the other team. As I was turned around telling my teammate my plan, he served. As I turned around, the other team's front man spiked the birdie straight into my left eye. Hyphema or some shit, basically it filled my eye with blood. I could still see out of it, but if I moved around too much, I'd be blind in that eye because of the blood moving around...and I played basketball 2 days later with no depth perception...

12th grade, mid basketball season, I proceeded to try and grab a rebound at the foul line coming right for me, 6 others ran at me to get it as well. My foot was stepped on, someones foot pretty much kicked my right leg's inner calf area while someone pushed me to the left with their hip. Torn MCL, this one gets the most pain award since it was my first time doing this...refused crutches as my point of genius on this one.

Freshman year of college basketball. In season, pinched shoulder nerve, sprained elbow, pulled groin. After the season, after intremurals, went for another long rebound. Landed funny on someone's foot and instead of my ankle going, my right knee went out again. Video footage shows me yelling, "Oh No, Not Again!" as I fell. Received my cell phone, called my mom, she asked what I was doing and I respond "Just admiring the gym's amazing ceiling."...."Oh, god, not again.."...retorn MCL and ACL sprain...genius moment, no crutches again.

Sophmore year of college basketball. Shin splits, yay me. Never fully recovered from my last year's folly so got reinjured against a 6'10" hefty NCAA D2 kid in a tournament. Recovered put played a lot more limited minutes for the rest of the season (except for the National Tournament)

"Junior" year of college (UMass), Oh nos, I've fallen again off a rebound. This time it's my left knee. I actually used crutches thanks to my girlfriend showing me how. I refused medical treatment and just acted as if it was my MCL again since it was similar pain areas and just a different knee.

Hmm, quite the list. But my first MCL injury was by far the worst since it was my first time.
Opinions are my own.

Aside from breaking/dislocating my wrist going for a blocked shot, nothing major. Probably a few ankle spains but they were minor, the most I stayed out with one was about 2 weeks. I also have knee tendinitis on my left knee =(.

Was out skating with my friends about six years ago, give or take. Went for a frontside boardslide, coming off the rail, my front foot slipped off the board. When the board came to the ground, my back foot was still on the tail. This made the board pop up into the air, hit me in the chin. Was about 9 stitches, I think?

Had a few other instances where I had stitches, a fractured rib, ehh... That's about it. Thankfully, nothing too serious.

1. Have two blown out shoulders with severe tendinitis from track and all around using my arms too much
2. Almost broke my jaw freshman year by pushing myself out of my track chair and fell directly ono the steering mechanism

Think those are it

That would've sucked. I know what you mean about everyday stuff being made extremely hard; when you start treating gout, you usually have another bad attack while the medication kicks in and after basically being unable to walk for three weeks, I had a couple more days where it flared up in both knees meaning I couldn't even hop or use crutches. Not a fun time.

Same thing happened to me a couple of times. That kind of stuff has no place in the game.

That is quite a list Jao, I don't envy that.

ok ill start telling my story..
so i was a lil boy (5-6years) . Do you know the metal stars that goes round , and they are in playgrounds..k ill draw that.
So... I was on that thing with my sisters friend (5years older) and my sister was on the ground shaking that thing. And at last it started to fall.. i was still hanging on to that thing. and when that thing touched the ground in somehow fall on my arm and broke it.
Than was the night when i was really sick..got a virus or something. And at the middle of the night i woke up and started to puke, cleaned up everything, went to sleep. After an hour i puked again.. and then after few minutes. 3 times already. Now i took a bucket to my bed. Again i woke up and puked in to the bucket, but the funny think was that nothing came out. I was just puking air. I even lold.
And this i was just playing basketball..alone. so i jumped, and then i was landing, tuch the ground and i heard something like "krght" and than said fuck..i think i broke my leg. So i went jumping on one leg to sit somewhere. Waited 5 min, hoping that it will not be serious and i could continue practicing. I had to jump to my apartment, since i didn't bring my phone with me. Its like 5th floor and has no elevator. So now i thought that i need to go to the hospital. Its like 1km from my home and i had to jump on one leg all the way. I thought of calling ambulance to get me, but no, i just didn't know what to say. So i reached the hospital. I went (jumped) to registry, waited in a long line, asked if surgeon is here, she said no and he will not be here the whole month, she said that i should go to the ambulance. I jumped outside the building and door to ambulance was closed. I said: well cool, if i was dieing there would be none to help me, "i will live all my life here, fo sure". So called my mother, she asked a friend to pick me up from there with a car and we went to a nutter hospital in capital city(Riga) 24 km from my hometown. So we got there.. got a Roentgen and the doc said that i had a broken ankle (wow, maybe i can be a doc too) . Couldn't walk for 3weeks and run for a month he said.
Thats all sofar.

One time I went camping with a bunch of friends. It was midnight and we all went to sleep in our tents. It was dark, no lights around except for the moon, and crickets chirping until... a loud chainsaw started buzzing into one of the tents. Screams ensued. I had a flashlight by my side. I quickly popped out to see what all the commotion was, and there stood a huge disfigured man all covered in blood, holding a roaring chainsaw. I watched him behead two of my camper friends before turning in my direction. I dropped my flashlight and ran as fast as I could.

I ran through the thicks of the forest, and I could still hear loud buzzing directly behind me. The dude was fast. He took one swipe and slashed my back. I screamed but kept running. My back felt wet. Soon, I found myself in an open field, and the moon cast a light on a barn ahead of me. I went in that direction and sprinted as hard as I could. I reached for the barn door handle and pulled. That gave the crazy guy the opportunity to make his attack. The chainsaw went right into my shoulder and sliced me down all the way to my torso. I fell into the barn, and bled profusely.

I was lying on my back, watching the silhouette of this fucking nuts guy walk in, and instantly, a long rod popped up into his direction, he slipped forwards, and this rod went right into his eye socket and through his brain. He fell back and the running chainsaw fell right on him, slicing his innards into a million little pieces. He stepped on a rake.

I padded my upper body with hay to absorb the blood, and dialed 911 until paramedics arrived. I was lucky to be alive, but I'll have to live with this scar, physically and psychologically, for the rest of my life.

Was playing basketball after school one day. Went up to get a rebound but this other guy spiked it right onto the top of my pinkie. Turns out I fractured a bone in it and it as puffed and swollen as a donut.

Broken (i.e not just torn) meniscus when I was eight, several dislocated fingers (passed out because of the pain once,) numerous sprains to my ankles and wrists.

Also, as a kid I used to cut my legs/arms/fingers open anytime I could. I've had stitches pretty much everywhere in my body. I cracked my head open twice when I was three and my chin when I was four, too. Most stitches I've had are 27 on my left forearm.

Err...

Last year I sprained my ankle pretty badly in a soccer collision. Trying to go for the ball, goalie plowed me over (goalie was 250+ lbs). Didnt play for 2-3 weeks.

Sometime when i was a kid (like 4) i tripped on the sidewalk, did a faceplant right into the ground. That one hurt.

Today I went up for a dunk in the rim on my yard ( 9 feet) and I lost the ball on my way up, and my thumb got caught on the bottom of the backboard while my hand/body was still in the motion of going towards the rim. Pretty hard to understand, but lets just say the area surrounding my thumb and my thumb are both swollen as shiz right now.

It feels like its just a really bad jammed finger, hurts a lot though. In my mind I'm thinking I could've dislocated it, but I still have movement in it. I also believe I may have damaged a ligament or something. I'm giving it a week till I go get it checked at the doc's, cause if its nothing serious it'll be a waste of money considering I don't have health insurance.

I know what you mean. I spent $60 on a consultation just to get a letter for my gout medication when I went to Canada back in June, in case I ran into any trouble at customs. As it turned out, it never came up but knowing my luck I would have been questioned about it if I didn't have the letter from my GP so it was worth being prepared. Normally, I avoid going to the doctor unless I'm in a bad way, like my first gout attack that had me on crutches.

-dislocated finger 2 times
-broken collarbone and 3 broken rips
-several lacerations (I stopped counting at 10, mostly eyebrows and chin)
-skull fracture (my head got smashed against the post)
-broken nose and cheekbone
all this happend while playing field hockey, mostly by getting hit with the ball or by getting run over.

(I hope that were the correct words my English is not that good when it comes to medical vocabulary)

But by far the worst was when I got hit by a hockey stick in the lower abdomen (for the ones that don´t know what I mean, I´m talking about my balls) that was by far the worst pain in my life. But don´t worry I´m back at 100%.

So I got back on the court today, my finger is feeling oh so much better. Still a little swollen now, and in pain when I make contact with it, but the pain and swelling is nowhere close to where it was when I hurt it. (Y) (Y) 2 thumbs up for my thumb still working.
