My brother just got promoted in his job, and his kid is due today. He works at Wall St. for a paycheck process company or something like that. He said he is going to get me a job there I am sooo excited, he works across the street from Ground Zero.
Well besides my excitement, I also start school in January. How will i manage working an 8-5 and going to school at night? What do you guys do?
Wed Oct 29, 2008 7:39 am
it sucks, i would try your best not to go to school and work every day. i did that for a while. it sucked balls.
Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:55 am
Hmm... do people go to school to be able to work in Wall Street? If you can work in Wall Street without having to go to school, then I'd skip school (not to devalue education... I'd still take school over work 9/10 times, but an opportunity doesn't pass by often.
Work + school doesn't work for most people.

I think I'm going to work full time and go to school part-time, taking 2-3 classes every Saturday.

Doobie, the full time work, part time school option sounds most sensible from what I can gather from your posts.

My brother told me that its always good to go to college, but with a job like this chances are I won't need it. He said most people who move up in the company and stay there for a long time usually make about 100k or more a year.
Wed Oct 29, 2008 4:10 pm
Well, if you feel that you will have that job security then go for it. However, a college degree always comes in handy; employers like employees with qualifications no matter what field you work in.
However, You're the one who knows more about the company and position so you will be able to make a more informed choice.

So good luck!

I thought pretty much eveything in Wall St. is fucked up right now, with the global economic crisis and shite.
Wed Oct 29, 2008 9:40 pm
If you can juggle both then it's certainly better to have some qualifications behind you and if you can be gaining experience and earn money while you study, so much the better.

Judging from your posts, no offense Doobie, but I don't think you can handle a full time job plus school at night. I wouldn't be able to, either. I'd stick with the job if it means you can make your way up to 100k a year, which is basically an opportunity of a lifetime.

It is, my brother didn't go to college and he regreted it until he found this job. Now he is making more money then a bunch of his friends who graduated from college and got there masters. He told me he has a friend who went to Monte Claire St. university, and 5 years after graduating he is a manager in an Olive Garden.
I really don't think I can handle doing both full time, but I really want some sort of college degree to fall back on, in case this job doesn't work out. My brother told me its a huge paycheck company (I don't know exactly what it is, but it has something to do with paycheck's). He also told me its a huge office building and I will be starting from the bottom (Messenger or something like that.) But since he is now the head of some department, chances are I'll move up as fast as possible.
I really believe I'm blessed for this opportunity, because like someone mentioned before, people go to college to be able to get a job like this (Not the messenger part.) But yes, I want to get atleast an Associates degree to have something to back me up. I will look up online classes, weekend classes, anything. Most likely I will go to school part time.

The most important thing man, is that you decide to do what you want to do. It's always huge factor to choose to do something you will enjoy. If you feel like this is a job/career you really are motivated to work in - by all means go for it! And if it doesn't work out, it's never too late to go back to College full time.
If you are working full time, studying part time is a viable option however you'd probably want that time to yourself for rest and having a social life.
Thu Oct 30, 2008 7:24 pm
Despite my previous post, I too would probably go for the job and keep my spare time free rather than study if I had an opportunity like that but keep study in mind all the same if the job doesn't prove too demanding that you just want to relax when you finish work for the day.
Thu Oct 30, 2008 10:05 pm
My advice to you would be to settle into your new job before trying to juggle studies with work.
Fri Oct 31, 2008 3:36 am
Get the job before the economy doesn't have any more to get. School will always be there. You can always go.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that getting the job wouldn't be the problem for Doobie, keeping it would be.
Focus, drive and motivation?

My brother actually spoke to me about that, he said I can't be lazy. He sees that its hard to motivate me but he also told me that after I see the money I will want to work everyday. He said its an easy job too, so we'll see.

I think it's a little different when it comes to paid work that you enjoy. If you start hating your job, that's when it becomes difficult to get out of bed at the crack of dawn and go in every day.

That is if money is one of your key motivators.
As Andrew said, you might be earning shiteloads of money but if you lose interest in your job, you'll eventually quit it sooner or later. Unless you're really desperate for the money.
