Nostalgia Critic

Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:46 pm

Another Internet favourite that I'm sure a lot of people are aware of but like the Angry Video Game Nerd, I've been getting into lately so I thought I'd make a post about him.

Nostalgia Critic Episodes

I have to admit, I like/liked a couple of the things he bashes like Space Jam and Captain Planet and I think at the time, both were good for what they were. That said, his skewering of them is justified and hilarious. I guess like AVGN it might appeal to older viewers who were around at the time and either enjoyed or were repulsed by the various subjects of his tirades but anyone familiar with them should get a kick out of it.

Favourite reviews include: The 90s Sports Montage, Saved by the Bell, The TMNT Movies, Top 11 Drug PSAs, Cartoon All-Stars Drug Offensive and of course, Space Jam and Captain Planet.

NC does quality videos. I watch them when i need a good laugh now and then.
favorites: just about all of them.

Since I bumped the AVGN thread and I've been watching a bit of Nostalgia Critic lately as well, thought this was worth a mention:
Critic and Nerd: TMNT Making of Coming Out of Their Shells

Pretty good crossover ep by the two of them.

I don't like the critic much. He is a bit too busy and unsympathetic.

After getting used to him, he is pretty funny.

His latest one is worth a watch, I've never seen Alone in the Dark but I saw as much as I cared to see during the review. Nice call back with the "Why was I in Star Trek VI?" line being used a couple of times.

Yeah, that one was hilarious. "Is he trying to outslater Chris Slater"? lol.

His bum review about district 9 was way off though. I know district 9 isn't original by any stretch of the imagination. Like Enemy Mine is probably the greatest influence for it being made. But that is not the movie's appeal. If you haven't seen Enemy Mine by the way, it kicks ass.

I haven't seen that one yet, I don't usually check out Bum Reviews. Ask That Guy With The Glasses is pretty funny at times, but I usually just stick with the Nostalgia Critic reviews.

No worries. Just to add to what I said before though, I don't mind the other features but I mostly watch the Nostalgia Critic stuff. Oh, and the Nostalgia Chick, she's pretty funny though she hasn't released a new video for a couple of months.

She's hot, but her sarcasm indicates that she doesn't enjoy life so much. I bet she could use a hug.

dude...sarcasm does not imply you dont enjoy life. Are you too young for your mind to comprehend it or something? sarcasm is a specific although sometimes caustic type of ironic humor. It implies nothing.

Sarcasm is frustration manifesting through humor. Can be funny, but it's still an indication of being unhappy.

Agreed, that's a huge generalisation. In any event, she's assuming the guise of a character, same as Doug Walker is with the Nostalgia Critic (who is pretty sarcastic himself at times). Some may use sarcasm to mask pain and problems, but the same could be said of a lot of things. In farce and satire, it's a handy tool and I'd say that's all it is here. Or maybe the Nostalgia Chick character has that angst but Lindsay Ellis herself does not.

Similar situation with the Angry Video Game Nerd. I doubt James Rolfe is actually that infuriated by bad games but he plays it up because it's part of the character.

Sometimes blanket statements are ok.

Where do you gather from that they are playing characters? And didn't they start making online vids because they were frustrated?

Re: Nostalgia Critic

The use of their respective monikers and recurring gimmicks, out-of-character interviews with them and so on and so forth; they are most certainly characters, based on their real opinions most certainly but with wildly exaggerated traits. As for why they're making the videos, they're making them to entertain others, mostly. I'm sure they have some fun doing it and ripping into things the way we all like to as armchair critics, but I highly doubt it's indicative of deep angst or frustration or anything of that nature.

Do you get mad when you play shitty games Andrew?

Re: Nostalgia Critic

Fri Sep 11, 2009 8:39 pm

I wouldn't say mad. Not to the extent that AVGN does anyway and I doubt James Rolfe carries on like that in his normal life as well. It's done for comic effect.

You don't think the extent of the emotion is realistic?

Re: Nostalgia Critic

I note this only because I clicked into yet another ALKAPWN train wreck by accident and because The Undiscovered Country is the best of the Trek films.
Andrew wrote:"Why was I in Star Trek VI?"

His mom was the casting director and he wanted to be in it.

This thread should now be about Star Trek VI, instead of the attempts to psychoanalyze everyone over the internet from a dual-identity forumer. (Or there should be a stickied thread about Star Trek VI.)

Re: Nostalgia Critic

It's not implausible, but in this case I really do think it's being put on for the sake of humour. I suppose it doesn't matter to us the viewers in the long run, we get to watch some funny videos.

Speaking of which, I have to make mention of the Saved by the Bell review again. "He looks like Vanilla Ice's bitch!"

The worst part is murdering your family wouldn't even work like all the other times I do it to break someone. You'd be glad to see them go.

I enjoy the fact that you consider yourself some sort of psychoanalytical savant. How does it make you feel?
