First website you visited

Postby Andrew on Wed Jun 18, 2008 4:15 pm

(Yes, another nostalgia thread of sorts.)

Do you remember the very first website you visited when you were introduced to the Internet?

I didn't get online until August 1997 when the family finally got connected. Technically, the very first page we brought up was one we went to so we could claim some bonus hours for our first month but after that, the very first website I pulled up was NBA.com. I followed the 97/98 season closer than any season before it since I no longer had to rely on the Game of the Week, NBA Action, magazines or newspapers for my NBA fix.

Within the first week of being online, I also discovered patches for the original Need for Speed that unlocked everything and some track editors which I immediately tried out. I also discovered the NLSC and the world of NBA Live patching. I remember being quite excited by the idea that my created Michael Jordan in NBA Live 96 could have a proper bio and retired players could be overwritten.

What about after that?

Come to think of it, most people's very first website probably will be the startup page for MSN or their ISP, or perhaps the website of the company that sold them their computer (or Apple's Livestart page for Mac users). So I guess I'm technically referring to the second page for most people; the first one by choice. ;)

I honestly don't really remember the first time I used the internet. I am gonna guess its most likely right after I came to U.S. in 96 and my dad was helping me set up a email. I still have and use that email  So I guess probably the Yahoo start-up page.

Very first I guess was hotmail. But the first one I visited frequently was something called Punch Baby (they have changed since the old days). It was really before it's time with viral videos and of course had a wanking section so it really was a one stop shop for me, haha.

NLSC did follow close behind that though.

EDIT: I just actually shuddered to remember that google wasn't prominent back in the day.
Opinions are my own.

Altavista was the first search engine I used, back when a search presented you with a more limited range of results.

Lays.ee or something. I saw it in a commercial and it had so many colours everywhere etc., so one day I went to my classmates place and told him I will show him something cool, and I went there. I was like 8 years old maybe.

Oh god, I first started using the internet shortly after the technology became public. I'm talking about a few websites that existed. Yahoo, aol.com, microsoft.com and nba.com is a few that comes to mind. If I wasn't 11ish years old, I would've invested in and bought a lot of domain names that probably would've made me a multi-millionaire right now.

Edit: Geocities! That thing was huge! Not anymore!

My mom worked as a webmaster for a kids' website back in the day, '96 I think it was, so that probably was the first website I visited. Of course I can't remember, I was just four back then. I think that website still hasn't been taken down.

I remember most of the time I spent online was on ICQ. Back when the person you were chatting with could see what you were typing while you were doing so.

My most visited page was probably Cyberjuegos.com. I used to play pool online. One game took ages, since I was on a 512 kbps broadband connection (which was like blazing fast in the late 90's).

Same here, but my reasoning is the layout. It's a fricking mess. Before it was crisp/clear and simple.

God damn clutter all over the place now. :x

I look up player profiles and other resources for the roster updates and occasionally might look up something in the history section but apart from that I rarely visit the front page anymore.

Agreed. It's not ugly per se but it does seem a bit cluttered, a bit too busy. Yahoo! NBA and RealGM's wiretap have become my first stop for NBA news.
