Fritz The Cat

Has anyone else around these parts seen it? It's famous for being the first X-rated animated film in the United States when it was released in 1972 and was referenced/parodied in the Simpsons' episode "The Day the Violence Died". On the commentary track for that episode, Josh Weinstein mentioned it and recommended anyone old enough should watch it as it was hilarious, so I tracked it down and the whole thing's on YouTube. It certainly puts Itchy & Scratchy to shame with its content.

They did, though I haven't seen the second one yet. I've heard it's not as good as the first.

It's worth watching to the end. There are a few slow points, or perhaps they just seem that way because they're so tame compared to the rest of it, but it's worth pushing through to the end. I'd be interested to see if the original comic strip pushed the envelope that far.

the first time i watched it i kinda thought i fell alseep and was dreaming. then i thought i must be fucked in the head to think i would be dreaming of that shit.

It's funny to think about the controversy that surrounds shows like South Park, Family Guy and even The Simpsons at times (moreso in the early 90s though) when Fritz the Cat took things so much further. Admittedly they're network TV while it was a theatrical release but it kind of puts Bart saying "ass" in perspective.

Fritz the Cat is a genius movie. Any Ralph Bakhshi (sp) movie is wonderful.

You should really check out American Pop, Heavy Traffic, and even Wizards (which isn't as good).

The 9 Lives of Fritz the Cat, or whatever the sequel was isn't near as good as the original though.

I really like his on paper cartoons too, such as Mr. Natural. (Y)

I've read that Robert Crumb was unhappy with the adaption of his original comic strip, leading him to kill off the Fritz character. I've also heard the sequel wasn't as good as the first movie but I'm interested to see it all the same.

Yeah, I could see how Crumb wouldn't like it... Mr. Natural got a tad less hippie-ish....

But yeah, the sequel has some interesting points to it, but still... by far worse than the original.

You should REALLY watch American Pop and Heavy Traffic if you haven't though, those movies are a million times better than Fritz The Cat and are simply works of pure genius.
