Good Lord...why do they feel they need to do that?

Tue May 20, 2008 9:34 pm

I guess they've got a lot of faith in Seth MacFarlane with the popularity of Family Guy and American Dad, so they're giving any old idea a try.

Tue May 20, 2008 9:53 pm

Yeah, but.... Cleveland?!

Tue May 20, 2008 10:09 pm

yeah why cleveland, why not the big Q?

Tue May 20, 2008 10:23 pm

Either way you've got a series based around a one-joke character. If they actually wanted to go ahead and depict Quagmires sordid misadventures, they'd probably run into more trouble with the censors anyway.

A teaser:

I'm underwhelmed, though admittedly the footage is all from Family Guy itself.

Cleveland sounds the exact same as Family Guy, only with black humor. Even the characters look alike.

I don't think it'll work. I actually hope it doesn't since they're wasting a timeslot with it.

I'm still underwhelmed. At least all the shows that Seth MacFarlane has been taking shots at will have some ready made material of their own.

MacFarlane should've created a new concept like American Dad (or what the Simpsons did with Futurama). Cleveland is pretty lame (see: Joey) and I can't imagine watching a show where he's the star because he talks soooo veeerrryyy slooooow. At least it's not a sci fi show, because I'm just so sick of the Star Wars references.

Even if he did come up with a new concept, it would probably have the usual MacFarlane trademarks such as anthromorphic animals, cutaways and a slew of shots at the expense of other television shows past and present. For someone who makes fun of other people's material, his own seens to be fairly limited.

Dont think that would stop him, somehow.

A Cleveland spinoff would maybe work as one episode. The idea has no legs beyond that.

Looking at that picture and the cast of characters, the show actually looks like it has a lot of potential. At first I thought it was just Cleveland, but to see a family juxtaposed with two contrasting families is actually looking promising.

Not to armchair mod, but benji does raise a good point. Maybe the Cleveland stuff could be merged to a new thread?

Thu May 22, 2008 7:40 am

As suggested, the thread has been split.

Thu May 22, 2008 7:44 am

Thank you much.

I thought I read it was supposed to get back to the old Family Guy point of being a satirical take on the classic family sitcoms. In this case, specifically targeted at The Jeffersons, Good Times, The Cosby Show, etc.

Are we to assume that Cleveland Jr left Quahog with his mother? Or did he just go the way of The Brady Bunch dog?

Thu May 22, 2008 10:16 pm

i would hate to have a couple of bears for neighbors

He hasn't appeared since Loretta was written out of the series so presumably he left with her.

Fri May 23, 2008 4:37 am

who are all these new people anyway?

I reckon it was even before that, though. Loretta left in season 4. Cleveland Jr was last seen in what i think was season 2.

I'm not sure about this. Cleveland is not my favourite character of the series.
And why his family has to be exactly like Peter's? A teenage girl, a fat boy and a little kid. :?

Fri May 23, 2008 1:17 pm

Don't you know, that's how all families are! Hopefully they'll have a talking house pet.

It looks like the girl might get a slightly different treatment than Meg. Just a guess though. Going way out on a limb here.

Fri May 23, 2008 1:50 pm

HAHAHA !
I'll be watching this show.

My guess: the teenage girl will be similar to Hayley from American Dad in terms of treatment, but more of a diva rather than a hippie, and the fat boy will be more like Chris with Peter's brain, and receives Meg-like treatment.

True, I don't remember him featuring in many episodes beyond the original run but as far as his current whereabouts we can probably assume he left with Loretta.

I'm guessing they might skip that step if they really do have some neighbors who happen to be bears...

I really don't know about that show, Cleveland is a hilarious side character, but having him as the main one, I really don't think this will do well with ratings.

Sun May 25, 2008 10:06 am

MacFarlane should concentrate on improving the other show (American Dad) than releasing another spin-off series.

When will Futurama save us from animated crap.
