Like most things of that nature, I'm against doing it myself, but as far as other people go...well, it's their choice. Mind you, I have a friend who does marijuana (hence I don't see him very often, I don't like being around it) and is having trouble going for a job that he's interested in because he won't be able to pass the drug test.

Even though I hate people who smoke, occasionally I join in for some Dutch vegetables. I know it's bad but hey if I don't do it they'll kick me out of the country

no.... we are the cool guys, we are the one's that are less likely to get lung cancer, we are the people that know we dont stink of tobacco and we are not the people that have to nip out of such things like films all the time for a quick smoke, and we are the people that feel fitter and the people that have £10 - £20 extra a week in are back pockets.

im not mad at yall for smokin
it should be legal in my opinion, especially here in Cali
smokin is alot more safer than drinkin by far
i have never heard of anyone who has been smokin to crash and kill somebody, the worst ive heard is somebody to have a big mac attack or raid ur fridge on a munchie mission.

Given that marijuana has been proven to affect a person's sense of depth and perception, driving under its influence is not at all safe. Driving under the influence of any drugs, legal or otherwise is generally not recommended. Why else would you be advised not to drive or operate machinery after undergoing an operation under anasthetic or after taking some over the counter medicinal drugs?

lol yeah just look at Lenny in Andrew's avatar... he's farked!! :D

I'm not hating on the smokers, I just don't do it myself. I have friends that do/have done it (any kind of smoking) but they have enough respect to keep it out of my face, and I repay the respect by minding my own business :)

...and as I've confessed to other people like Matthew, I can't be bothered smoking anything because I'm already on the hard stuff. Yeap that's right, Coca Cola! That shit will eat out your stomach lining and keep you up all night. When I finally run to the toilet to relieve my self after a couple of bottles... I feel like I'm flyin man  :) :D

That's pretty much how I feel about the situation. I only take exception if it affects me in some way (as someone driving under the influence of any drug might) or if they take a "I'm cool because I do this, you're not cool because you don't" kind of attitude.

How can you say smoking is alot safer then drinking because of the effects it has on someone's driving? Lungcancer is one of the biggest causes of death! Also, when you smoke, this depends on your environment ofcourse, and I don't think people are aware of it all the time, other people have to inhale the smoke, at parties or whatever. These people are exposed to the same dangers smokers are, but the difference is smokers do it by choice.

Since this is a message board afterall, why not discuss this. I'll make a statement we can discuss about. There have bbeen more discussion the past days than there has been most of the rest of the year so I hope this can be kept clean, off the personal and unlocked.
This should be even more interesting since there are some smokers around.

The statement:
People who sue cigarette companies because they have lungcancer have no right to do so.

Fire away.

A right to sue? I'd say so. A good chance of winning? That depends.

A smoker probably waives their chance of successfully suing a cigarette company when they continue to ignore the warning on the box. Tobacco companies are required by law to place warnings on all advertising and on their products, so it's not as if the harmful effects of smoking are kept a secret.

In addition to that, the world has been made aware of the dangers of smoking through medical literature - pamphlets in doctors offices, published research and the like. In Australian high schools, it's taught in PE/PD/Health classes.

If you are willing to risk your health in spite of prominent warnings and proven medical complications, then you shouldn't be able to turn around in 20 years when you develop problems, and sue the tobacco companies.

Someone who has been subjected to second hand smoke might have a case, but it would be difficult to prove. The argument could be made in regards to avoiding situations where you are exposed to second hand smoke - restaurants, night clubs, social gatherings etc - but you should not have to forfeit your social life because of one aspect.

People who are affected by second hand smoke would probably have a more convincing case against the proprietor of an establishment, say a restaurant, that did not provide adequate smoking/non-smoking sections. I think they should also have the right to sue the tobacco companies, on the grounds that they continue to supply the public with a substance that can be harmful to not only people who use it but also the people around them, but their chances of success would be slim, IMHO.

Dan i agree 100%.
theres warning all over packs of cigarettes and if people buy them, they are smokin at there own risk.
same if they have been smokin at a time of pregnancy(for the ladies of course lol) and there child comes with a deformity or a mental disease(handicap) and they decide to sue the company. they have no chance of winning coz there are warnings all over them these days.
geez, people will do anything for money these days lol
if a smoker won a batle in court for sueung, they probably wouldnt have gained anything(money wise i mean) coz of all the maoney they wasted on buying the cigarettes.

I believe the people who have made cases out of this are mostly people who had been smoking before the tabacco companies put warnings on the packages, or even from the times where commercials promoted tabacco as being cool etc. This is their biggest lead, I can't think of any other argument they might have. I wonder what they'd answer when a judge tells them about the various methods that exist to quit smoking and why they haven't done so yet.

To provide another argument against these cases, when someone shoots himself, does it sounds reasonable for the family to sue the company that's made the gun? Or when someone shoots someone else? Sueing the company?
When you crash your car, sue the motor company? They made the car..
