Linksys router

Postby Doobie on Wed Oct 17, 2007 1:06 am

I am currently using my brothers computer and we have a Linksys wireless-G router working in my house. The internet stopped working in my room and I'm wondering problems that I could be having? I changed the ethernet cable and it says that the receiver is connected its just not goin through to my comp. Any advice??

First of all, talk to the other people in your house and see if they changed the tcp/ip settings for the router through their computer. There's probably a list of allowed devices, yours might have been accidentally removed. If that's not the case, here's some steps. First off, just curious, do you see a connection to the wireless network? Not the actual internet, just to your house's network.

Step one is powercycling the modem and router (or the gateway if it's an all-in-one unit). Leave it unplugged (the power, not the ethernet) for about 20 seconds, then plug it back in.

That will fix it like 80% of the time (I work in a cable internet call center).

If it's still not working, Check your network connections panel and verify that your wireless connection shows as 'enabled'. If not, obviously, enable it.

Still no? Restart your computer. Still no? I'll check back later, there's more steps than are worth typing out at the moment. :)

Well my computer shows a connection to the wireless network but when I click on aim or firefox or anything internet related, it says a server error has occured. I tried disconnecting the power and its not working on the modem and my internet still is down. My brothers computer and my older brothers computer all have moments where they are not connected to the wireless network, mine is the only one thats connected most of the time but it doesn't work. I will try unplugging the modem for 20 seconds once again. And yes my network connections are enabled.

Why I asked is because you can be connected to the wireless network without an actual internet connection. The same technology can be used without any internet connection at all for just filing sharing between desktop and laptop, for example.

If this is an ongoing issue in your house, you might want to consider getting a wireless range extender, or a set up (for about $150 at Best Buy) that will allow you to use your electric outlets in your house as your network. Normal wireless routers really aren't all that hot for getting the signal all throughout a house, especially if you're on multiple floors, have thick walls, etc.

Picture dropping a stone into a pond. The ripples that move out are your internet signal. If they hit something; a log in the pond or a wall in your house, it doesn't get through as well.

Good point but it has worked perfectly for over a year up until last week. I don't know I'll keep trying to get mine working.

Hm... well, my girlfriend is a complete guru at this, I barely know anything. If it's fixable, she can fix it. We won't be home for like... 9-10 hours, though. We'll see.

And she'll probably tell you everything that was wrong with my previous advice, too.
