Why are they your favorite teams?

Postby Christopherson on Wed Oct 10, 2007 2:52 pm

So we all have teams that we just love to root for. We cheer them on for various reasons. It may be that a fellow countryman plays for that team or that we were hooked on their success or as a young child. Many of us are loyal to local teams. So the purpose of this thread is to explain why you like the teams that you do. Feel free to include NFL, MLB, Hockey, soccer, NBA as well as teams from leagues residing in different countries.

NBA: Utah Jazz. Why? Well lets just say that a relatively close realtive of mine was drafted by the team after a career at Gonzaga. So that is the reason I began rooting for them. Even though John has been retired for a while it just doesn't reel right to root for another team.

College Hoops: Gonzaga. Why? Not because of their cindarella run, and not even because Stockton played there. I have a friend on the team. Yes, the one who got caught with strooms. :shakes: Dumbass

College Football: Idaho Vandals. Why? I go there, my family has all gone there, etc. I HATE Boise State. You know what really pisses me off, ever since their BCS win it seems like everyone in the state of Idaho has jumped on the bandwagon, including people who go to Idaho. It pisses me off. BSU is like the Ohio State to my Michagen.

Other than that I really don't have any strong rooting interests. I love the NFL and follow baseball, but mainly I just root for good storylines, etc.

NBA: Nets. Im not sure why i chose the nets, ive loved them for ages. not because of ron mercer, i think its cause the first nba jersey i got was a jason kidd one

AFL: Kangaroos. Ive gone for the roos as long as a can remember. my grandpa goes for them so its probably cause of him

NFL: Ravens. Because of Ed Reed. Hes a beast and one of the first nfl players i came across

NBA: Lakers. Back in the early-mid 90's, the NBA was shown on FTA tv here every weekend and one guy I really loved watching was Cedric Ceballos. So I sort of latched on because of him. Of course now there are so many bandwagoners here that it makes me question the choice.

NRL: Sydney Roosters. When I was a kid, my brother/cousin were huge Manly fans so we went to Sydney to watch some games with them. We were there to see Manly vs Norths and the players were complete cunts to us, then the next day we saw the Roosters vs the Bulldogs and the Rooster players were great, so I was a fan from then.

NBL: Sydney Kings. It was the Falcons but since they were removed I just went for the next closest team. Plus I've always liked Shane Heal, and they had Acie Earl for like three games.

S13: NSW Waratahs. I generally don't like rugby and barely pay any attention to it, but they offered me a youth development deal when I was 15 so I've vaguely supported them since.

Serie A: Inter Milan. My dad is from Italy so I wanted to pick an Italian team when I was like 5... I liked Inter's jerseys the best at the time  so I picked them. I still love the team, for more valid reasons now obviously. Though if I was going to pick a team purely based on jerseys again it'd be Juventus or Roma.

EPL: Aston Villa. One of my great grandads apparentely used to play for them ages ago so I started following them for that reason. Unfortunately the team was a disappointment constantly, always showing promise but never following through, now there's a new manager, a new owner and a pretty exciting bunch of players so it's a good time to be a Villa fan 8-)

NBA - Toronto Raptors. I've lived here since I have been in Canada (came here when I was 2 and a half). To make it short, I got hooked during the 2000-2001 season, watching Vince Carter be absolutely amazing and I was hooked, plus they were from the same city I lived and still live in today. Also add into the fact they're the only Canadian team.

EPL - Arsenal. Quite a few years ago, I was at my cousin's house looking for his copy of NHL99, couldn't find it but instead I found FIFA99. I popped it in, I selected the first team that was available and there was Arsenal. I began messing around with the game and found it fun (favourite sport as a kid was soccer). Then I started watching some soccer on TV and when I watched a game that had Arsenal playing, I couldn't believe how exciting and awesome they were, so that got me hooked onto the team. Recent years I haven't really watched as much though, but I still like the Gunners. TOP OF THE EPL RIGHT NOW :!: Eat it, Chelsea, Man Utd, and Liverpool!

NBA - Portland Trailblazers. Because I bandwagoned Zach Randolph and now I love their new foundation.

AFL - Geelong Cats. Hometown heroes wooooooo.

EPL - Arsenal because Davor Suker (the GOAT) played for them. Now Eduardo Da Silva plays for them :D

Premiera Division - Real Madrid. I've always loved the players they have/had, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Raul, Casillas etc

NFL - St. Louis Rams. Back on NFL 2k3 they were the best team.

NBA - Chicago Bulls - It was almost by default. I started getting into sports like most kids, as soon as they could play. I was buying basketball cards when I was 5 years old, and constantly bombarded by images of Jordan, Pippen and the first three-peat. Watching the games, Michael and Scottie amazed me, and I had always loved the city of Chicago. It was just natural.

NFL - Atlanta Falcons - The first NFL game I ever watched was a Falcons game. Michael Vick was amazing, the thing's he did in that game had me hooked. I was flicking through the channels and always had a slight interest in football after we had a football player come to our school to teach us the game, which was alot of fun. Watching Vick in that game was crazy, and after that I started watching the NFL more.

College Hoops - Texas/UNC - The first time I got to watch college basketball was probably 4 years or so ago when I first got cable TV. I saw UNC play, and really got hooked on watching Rashad McCants. Then I the PJ Tucker/Daniel Gibson duo at Texas. I loved watching PJ play, and I have followed these two teams since. High points would definately be the UNC national championship and Kevin Durant's freshman year with the Longhorns. If I ever manage to go an exchange during university for a year, whatever college I goto will naturally become a team I follow (probably UCLA).

EDIT: Marks post reminded me, UConn. Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor were alot of fun to watch and I really liked that team as well - since then the only UConn guy I've really liked has been Rudy Gay. They were really quiet this year, and I think I only saw a game or two.

College Football - Texas - The first time I ever sat down and watched a full college football game was on January 5th, 2006. I skipped school that day. I was watching all these analysts shows on ESPN regarding college football, then the game started. I had no idea what the Rose Bowl was, but I sure as hell did come the end of it. Vince Young put on one of the best shows I have ever seen in the world of sports. I still remember Vince Young running into corner of the endzone to take the lead with something like 20 seconds to go. That game - even though I knew very little about football - was the best game I had ever seen since Jordan's final game as a Bull.

Rugby - Canterbury Crusaders - Although I don't follow Rugby much at all anymore, they are the hometown team and they were absolutely dominant during the years I followed rugby. I've got some great memories from watching these guys.

NBA - Orlando Magic - When the whole Basketball craze hit me when I was young it was during the period that Shaq got drafted by the Magic so most of the games I saw on TV were often the Magic or the Bulls. I always thought Florida was cool at that age (themeparks etc) so I followed the Magic from then on. I'm proud to say ive stuck with them from then on, even when they traded T-Mac (who became my favourite player during his Magic days, and still is)

EPL - Arsenal, I wasn't as into soccer as much as my mates, I played it when I was young but didnt really follow it. The first pro game I saw was Arsenal and I just fell in love with their style of play, Henry quickly became my favourite, and although I was sad to see him packed off to Barca I have to say that the Gunners are just as if not more exciting to watch now. Oh and yeah a whole EPL season unbeaten, amazing!

La Liga - I would have to say Barca, more so now that Henry is there, but also beacause I love the new Rijkaard era, and watching Ronaldinho always playing with such a passion for the game is always great. But I my support of Barca will never be close to Arsenal, so I was extremely gutted when they beat them in the ECL final two years back.

College Hoops - UConn/NC State - Uconn simply because when College hoops started to be shown here frequently me and a few mates picked a team to support through the tourny, I picked Uconn cos I had read about a few of the players in SLAM mags. UC State for a similar reason, just new tounry but now I just stick with either of the two.

Rugby - Canterbury of course, Cantab man through and through whether it be NPC or Super 14.

I am kinda like a bandwagoner I have to admit.
The Bulls of 96 were the first team I was a fan of. Just 9 years old I think it was just because they were successfull. But I have to say I always loved Pippen and not Jordan, maybe just to seperate me a bit from all the Jordan fans.

After the decline of the Bulls I stopped being a real fan of any team ...
In live I often took the Hornets because I just liked the logo and the state and I was more like an Eastern Conference guy.

Well .. things changed when Dirk entered the league. I mean its really something spectacular when a german player gets drafted and has success .... basketball aint too popular here .....

So when I check the scores on NBA.com Im always like what did the Mavs do and how many points had Dirk.

So Ima Mavs fan I guess .. but truely its just because of Dirk.

Soccer : I am still a symphatisant of Bayer Leverkusen, but not a real fan.
But Im a supporter of the german nationalteam for sure :)
And I like the soccer club I am playing for myself (in the lowest league that is possible ^^ )

And I got another one, NHL: That was quite fun since I played NHL live 97 and no idea of any pro teams. I took the Detroit Red Wings and I did not know that they were good ... loved to play with Fedorov and Yzerman ;)
Well so I was rooting for them but acutally I am not that interested in Ice Hockey ...

Yeah I also enjoyed watching those old UCONN teams. For some reason I really liked watching Khalid al Amin (sp?) play. That final four with Andre Miller and Utah was what got me hooked on college basketball. I've also always been a fan of UNC almost solely because you have to choose sides in the UNC/Duke rivalry. Joe Forte used to be one of my favorite players.

NBA: I root for the Heat. I think I started to like them when Shaq first came to their squad. I was an instant fan of the squad or should I say a bandwagoner.
Wade was their too .. I was impressed with his game and so I started to really cheer for them. I also like the Cavs . James's jersey was the first NBA jersey I ever gotten.
And I also like the Bulls, because of the Jordan years.

Euroleague: CSKA Moskva.. great club and Matjaz Smodis plays great for them. I only got into following the club and its one of my favorites already. I also root for the Slovenian team Union Olimpija that plays in Euroleague. They might not be the best , but they are from my country.

NHL: Ottawa Senators .. I like Dominik Hasek so when he played there I liked the team. I don't follow hockey much , but I still like the Senators.

NfL : Seahawks were the first team I ever saw play. Alexander was a monster in that game so I started to dig them .

Soccer: Don't follow it much, but when I do I usually root for Bayern Munich and Milan (Y) .

And I root for Slovenia and Croatia in every sport. Got to support them (Y).

NBL: Victoria GIANTS. Best team ever, world class. I would never like a team and become a blind fanboy just because David didn't like them. Never.

College: Anyone who is not Michigan.

Other than that, I don't really have any favorite teams.

I like a few teams like Golden State, Orlando and Portland, but I can never truely become a die-hard fan of the team like I have become for Toronto, for obvious reasons of course. At first when I didn't really like basketball and the Raptors were still considered an expansion team, I thought they sucked and never really cared for them. The Raptors started to pick up steam in the 98-99 season with the Carter craze going on and I was blown away by the guy's leaping ability. I think I was spoiled in my early years of watching basketball because I got to watch a guy like Carter throw down a ridiculous dunk or two every game (literally).

Then I started to analyze the game a lot more closely and I began to appreciate hard workers like Oakley, Antonio Davis, Jerome and Alvin Williams and the team just grew on me.

NBA: Toronto Raptors, for the same reasons as Its_asdf: "for obvious reasons of course." Before Toronto existed, though, I loved Penny and the Orlando Magic, Reggie and the Pacers, and briefly, the Phoenix Suns when Penny was there for a year before more of my attention was drawn to Toronto. I've always admired the Spurs organization, though.

NHL: Edmonton Oilers, for obvious reasons.

NFL: N.E. Patriots. no other team worth rooting for if you ask me

MLB: Boston Red sox. no other team worth rooting for if you ask me

NHL: Boston Bruins. i am sure you get the point by now

NBA: Chicago Bulls. I loved Steve Kerr as a kid, and of course MJ, Scottie, Kukoc, the whole team. Luc Longley and Bill Wennington included.
I'm a big fan on Luol Deng and Ben Gordon, although I don't follow basketball as much as I used to.

New York Knicks. To me, they were the best back in the 90's. Ewing was my favorite player at that time and I really liked Starks too. The whole team was amazing back then in the mid-late 90's. I still support them.

Serie A: Juventus FC. Back in 1996, I went on vacation with my grandparents and came here to Italy. I happened to go to a soccer match here in Milan (I think it was Inter-Juve). I was mad at my granduncle for some reason I don't remember, and he told me to cheer for Inter, but instead I cheered for Juventus. Since that moment I've been a Juve fan.

Campeonato Argentino: CA Boca Juniors. My dad's a Boca fan, so I've always taught Boca is the best team in Argentina and in the Americas. I've been wearing gold & blue since I was born.
I can't wait until we kick AC Milan's ass in December.

I'm also a New York Jets fan but for no apparent reason. I just like them.

Did you sign with them or get any money?!?

as for Lakers, that's my story right there....Ced Ceballos....I might You Tube him right now....I stopped liking Lakers in once they got Shaq & Kobe (& traded Cedric) & the bandwagon started to fill up....

onto my list....

NBA: Don't have a favourite team, but do want one. One day maybe, one day.

College Hoops: I'm a fan of Cinderellas, but as far as who I normally like. I like Maryland a little due to Laron Profit & that team. I like Wisconsin due to Kirk Penney, but don't like their style of play. Always had a soft spot for Arizona teams, dating back to the days of Jason Terry, Miles Simon, Mike Bibby, Michael Dickerson, Eugene Edgerson etc. They now have Chase Budinger so it helps. All that being said, my fav team at the moment is probably West Virginia due to their vaunted 1-3-1 matchup zone  If coaches didn't move around so much these days, I'd probably have one or two favourites....

Rugby Union Super 14/NPC: Canterbury Crusaders/Canterbury. Hometown/Birthplace team.

Rugby League: Don't like league anymore, but if pushed then the Auckland Warriors & Gold Coast Titans as secondary team. This is home country team & hometown team.

AFL: Don't really follow it too much anymore, but I support Brisbane Lions & Sydney Swans as secondary team. This is hometown team, & I've always liked & respected the Swans for whatever reason. I think I started liking them more when they had Tony Lockett.

Football A League: Queensland Roar & to Wellington Phoenix as secondary team. Home team & home country team.

Football Premier League: I've always been a Liverpool supporter. Find myself preferring West Ham these days. Don't really follow it too much though.

NBL Basketball: Brisbane Bullets & Gold Coast Blaze. Hometown teams.

NFL: Miami Dolphins. Had a fake jersey when I was a kid & thus always liked them.

NBA: Lakers. I followed them because they were the only team I knew about apart from the Pacers - courtesy of the NBA live 2001 demo. Liked Fish and Lue at first but then started to follow Kobe. The rest is histroy... and probably chose a bad time to be a 'fan' but i don't care. Because now I am a huge fan and I ain't gonna support another NBA team in the future. :D

Soccer: Arsenal - my mate is a big Man Utd fan. My other 2 mates likes Liverpool. They told me not to like Chelsea so I watched a few Arsenal games and played FIFA (always chose Arsenal since they were the only team I had heard of and they were first due to alphabetical order of course to pick from) and I slowly claimed them as my own. I have come to fall in love with the style of play from the team. The fluidity of the attack and the passing.

Also go for Barca now that Henry has joined them.

In the A-league, Qld Roar since they are hometown team.

NBL: Brisbane Bullets. Hometown.

AFL: Brisbane Lions. Hometown.

NRL: Brisbane Broncos. Hometown again.... I follow Broncos and Bullets more than Lions though. So you could say I'm not really a Lions fan. Also support Souths since grade 9 because they were shit and a laughing stock. They were one of the only constants in the NRl in that they were consistent losers. :D Now that they started winning, my mates still say I'm a fan. Which is why I got a Souths ball and shirt for my birthday...

Tennis: James Blake. Love his history/story.

That's pretty much how I became a Bulls fan. The Jordan/Pippen era came about as I was growing up and as I developed a keen interest/obsession with basketball, I became enamoured with Chicago since they were one of the teams featured most prominently in Australian TV coverage and merchandising (not to mention all the magazines).

MLB-Atlanta Braves-My dad grew up listening to them on the radio with his grandfather, i grew up watching them on tv with my dad. Bobby Cox, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux are all eternally etched in my memory as the good parts of baseball. Even some of the other players who didnt stick around with the braves (Javy Lopez, soon Andruw Jones) have given me hours of amazing entertainment for years. Its not gonna change, no matter how bad they get or where I live. Atlanta is the team i watched to learn there is more to baseball than homeruns. Thanks to that, i can watch a pitchers duel in baseball and enjoy it more than an offensive slugfest, go figure.

American Football (NFL and NCAA)-Being originally from the South this sport rules all. Thursday JV high school, friday high school, saturday College, pros sunday. As for this the Pro team of choice for me is the Carolina Panthers. Their training camp is in my hometown and i've gotten a chance to meet the majority of the coaching staff and players. As bad as it got (1-15 season), and as good as it got (only losing on a squib kick in the SB) the Panthers are my childhood summed up. My room is still decked with Panthers stuff. I even have from the Superbowl run each week a cutout from the local paper. Also the panthers taught me as did the braves the meaning of defense. Sure its fun to watch an 80 yard pass, but lamar lathon laying steve young on his back is even more fun. As for NCAA, naturally i pull for Illinois (my school) and Clemson (once again father influence and my sister's school) I also will pull for the Gamecocks as long as they're not playing the Tigers or Illini.

Basketball (NBA and College)-I started as a Charlotte Hornets fan, back in the days of Mugsy, Alonzo, and Larry Johnson. Not a bad time to start watching hoops. As I grew older however, my role models were replaced by Vlade, Glen Rice, etc. Once the hornets moved my allegiances changed. Like everyone else from my generation I had followed the Bulls in the Jordan era, and i took a look at their team a couple years ago. I saw a lot of underappreciated hustle players pulling big time upsets with nowhere to go but up. The Bulls are currently my favorite NBA team because until this past year or so, there was no standout, no all-star, it was a true team that played the game. However the most part i just pull for players; any Illini, a few players from the South (Joakim Noah, Ronaldo Balkman) and dont really follow team aspects anymore. As for college basketball, my freshman year is one of the greatest years of my life solely because of the Illini's stellar run to the NCAA final and raping by the refs they received (Sean May shoulder blocked our guards and no fouls were called, Augustine looked at a ball and was called for it) but i have never felt as much a part of something as i have then.
Soccer-No i know nothing about it, but i just pull for the USA and Brazil in any world cup event. Brazil defines the art of soccer, and the USA, so i'm a homer

Ok enough rambling from me.

NBA: Seattle Supersonics. They're my home team, not much else to say. I've been rooting for them since I knew what basketball was.

Anything College: Washington State University. In Washington there are Cougar Fans, and then there are UW Husky fans, and well, Cougar fans are just better. Creighton is OK I guess, and my reason for that is fairly obvious.

MLB: Colorado Rockies. I started to like them about five years ago, before that I'd of course been a Mariners fan. I liked their logo, stadium, and uniforms, and they were always terrible so I figured it'd be fun to root for them. Now they're really good and I'm really happy.
