Anyone got a Nintendo DS?

Postby Ty-Land on Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:18 am

Just wondering if anybody has one of these. A mate of mine just bought one and it is actually pretty cool. I was thinking it was going to be quite lame, but the gameplay is nice. Thinking of grabbing one so I can play the 3 Phoneix Wright games and Hotel Dusk as well as the latest updates of Mario Classics such as Mario Kart DS.

The price is fairly reasonable ($180AU) for the Lite (updated) model, and I hear there are ways of getting games on the cheap side

Could be a nice little gadget to fill in my spare time this summer, as I'm not planning to do much at all except relax and enjoy one of my last summers without fulltime work committments.

So if anybody has one, or has played one let me know. Would appreciate some feedback.

I'm a sucker for handhelds, and I have a DS and PSP. Based on my own preferences, I definitely regret getting my DS. Should've used that money for something else :P I find games on the PSP more suitable to my tastes over the majority of the DS games. However, if you get an R4, it'd make the DS somewhat worthwhile. It all boils down to personal preferences really. But I do support the system and Nintendo nonetheless for trying to innovate and being unique.

I went to a Nintendo forum and saw a topic discussing that very question. They were arguing that because of the popularity of the DS that a new handheld would be at least 2 years away. Also, not until there is another console as there are similar release periods, i.e. not until the Wii is succeeded. That sold me more on the issue.

If I got one I would definitely by an R4 and play from ROMS. I already spend enough money in the gaming industry by purchasing all my 360 games. Pretty confident I will pick one up at the end of the month - start of october. Maybe when the new Zelda comes out as they might do a package deal or something.

The DS is pretty fun, but it doesn't last too long unless you like a huge variety of games. The R4 is a must have though.
I recommend Luminous Arc.

Yeah, I hate it when consoles have a huge variety of games for them...stupid choices.

It allows you to download games, movies, music, and skins for the DS.
It's like $40-$50 for 1GB and $60-$80 for 2GB.

As mvpshaq32 said, it's basically a "modchip." I don't know if posters are allowed to discuss this subject on console modding or roms, but since we're all human, X/Ty-Land, if you guys are interested, I can pm you a site that I get all of my DS roms.

My girlfriend and I both have a DS, and we both really enjoy it. The single-card download play for most games means we only have to buy one copy of the game (most of the time).

Admittedly, alot of the games flat-out suck, but that's true of any system, isn't it?

Mario Kart DS is easily the best of the series in my opinion. The local wireless (playing with two people and not having to do split-screen) made it worth the entire cost of the system to me. We love playing Mario Kart Double Dash on Gamecube, but both hate split-screen.

Tons of games have wi-fi multiplayer too, meaning you can play with anyone anywhere in the world. Kids from Japan kick my ass at Mario Kart.

Anyway, no time to type more. I <3 my DS, end of story.

Mario Kart DS

Blastphamy. Mario Kart Super Circuit is the pinnacle of the series. The spin offs of Mario Kart 64 are fail.

QFT. I've been able to beat everyone I've ever met at Mario Kart, but people with non-english characters in their names are strangely brutal at DS games.

Wi-fi is fun on DS, but Metroid Prime Hunters (or as I like to call it Cripple Simulator) will never be fun.

Oh god yes... prime hunters is awful. the graphics are nice but it plays worse than an obese kid with a piccolo.

so yeah, I had gift vouchers for David Jones....I thought about getting some work trousers, & considering they won't like AUD$200 for them, I thought bugger it, I'll just use them for a DS Lite....I haven't got the handheld yet, but will probably go down to David Jones on Monday or Tuesday & pick it up....

also my mate is a manager at EB & I had a few hundred dollars of gift certificates left there from 360 trade....so yeah, picked up Nintendogs Dalmations for my fiancee, that'll keep her happy (we've got a working class Beagle IRL, so she'll like it no doubt)....got Mario Kart, figured that you can't have a Nintendo console without at least one Mario Kart game....also picked up Brain Training (the original one) & the original Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney game....he dropped price of each game about $15 or so....used the rest of my remaining credit to pay for pre-order of Assassins Creed on PS3, as well as put deposits down on a couple of other titles....

so yeah, will let you know how it goes....I figured it's good for the half an hour train rides into & from work each day, as well as the 24 hour flight to & from Europe this coming March....it's the first handheld I've ever owned, so should be interesting....

Well it is Nintendo......The most violent game you see from Nintendo was the Resident Evil 4.
But I still see 20-30 year old people playing Tetris on the DS and some people enjoy the classics like Zelda.

Resident Evil isn't from Nintendo.

Mario & Luigi is amazing, and New Super Mario Bros. was a return to form for the series.

The DS, like the Wii, is for all ages.

How would you feel if I throw a Wii controller to your face?
The games may not be violent, but the hardware is.

I'm 26 & I recently got one....for me, it's good for travelling (on trains & planes) & passes time....I have games like Brain Training & more strategy games, card games, that sort of stuff....my fiancee plays it too....I can also play wireless against my nephew & it keeps him off my PS3

I got fairly big hands, but I don't seem to have to much of a problem with it....
