So I met a few Austrailians...

Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:43 am

... now, what I'm about to say is all in good fun and hopefully nobody is offended. I don't think it's offensive, and I imagine a lot of people will reply with, "You're fucking right!", but hey, I figure a little disclaimer never hurt anyone...

So anyway, for the past five days I've been at the NSCAA National Soccer Coaches Convention in Indianapolis, IN. Now, one of the sessions I sat in on was run by a man who trains U15 and U17s, and had trained 5 of the 2006 World Cup Austrailian soccer players, and a handful of players before that. At any rate, his session was on advanced zone defending and was excellent, so I approached him after the 90 minutes were up to ask him a few questions and so on...

Anyway, he was a very nice gentleman, and we realized we were both staying at the Westin Hotel, and he asked me and the rest of my staff that was there with me to meet him and some of his buddies at the hotel bar for a few drinks later...

Here's where the stereotype comes in... now, I like to think that I can drink like a champion. I went to the #1 party school in the entire United States 2 of my 4 years, and did and still do on occasion drink like a fish... but when I tell you that these four men could drink me, my friends, and probably everyone else I've ever met under the table with ease would be understatement of the year. These guys just fuckin' slammed Guinness after Guinness. We were supposed to have the last round on three separate occasions, only to order up another one (See: they did, not me), totaling over a dozen in total in just a few hours. I was pretty set, but these guys were just going up to their rooms and were primed to head out and start "really drinking." Holy shit! It was the only night I passed out early in my room and wasn't able to get out until 3 - 4 in the morning.

So anyway, I now assume that all Austrailians can drink like beasts, and more power to you for doing so.

Some of us can, it's a natural talent developed by the hidden "bogan gene" we all possess at birth.

That being said, over here soccer/football is seen as a "girls sport" and not particularly known for the drinking involved. So really, if you were drinking with a rugby league/union coach (not GAYFL) he would've more than likely been an even better drinker than the soccer guy.

Hahahaha.
Yeah us Australians are great at drinking... (Yeah, I'm 14. haha)

If you look close enough, you'll see a beer can printed on our national flag. It's that involved in our culture.

From the sounds of it, those boys could drink. I can't do anything like that. I'm more of endurance drinker rather than a sprinter. I'll drink 15 and still be standing and talking coherently, but i'll skull one and feel like throwing up.

lol I've drunk about 17 beers + a couple of shots and been fine.. Probably just the culture.

Not enough? :(

You're a skinny Asian , I don't know ANYONE who can not only drink that volume but also mix drinks and still be fine. Not even hardcore alcoholics can manage that.

Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:30 pm

My uncle has no job, sleeps all day and drinks all night. In my 17 years and 3 months of life, I have never seen him sober. Surely he could handle that?

Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:41 pm

Matt, haha! in fact i'm not drinking vodka! but solid russian man could drink 12-15 cups of 100ml for the evening and he'll be

Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:43 pm

sorry

I'm not skinny though. :?

Well I do go drinking every weekend.

don't laugh so quick, I'd say of all the Asians I meet, 50% can drink big....this little Korean girl at my work goes nuts, it's classic....

but yeah, back on topic, Aussies are pretty big drinkers, according to statistics, they are No. 2 drinking nation in world per capita, trailing only New Zealand....but we all knew that would be the case....see Jae's comments about rugby players drinking a lot, as the whole country is full of rugby players it makes sense....

but yeah, some Brits are alright, as are Russians, Swedes etc when it comes to Vodka :P

We do seem to have that reputation. I represented my country at the NBA Live Community Day last year not only as NLSC webmaster but also by drinking 8 pints of Stella with dinner on the first night (which isn't that much really, I've had bigger nights and I know people who can put my best efforts to shame), which was apparently good enough to earn me "tank" status. However, I've been on the wagon so far this year. I had a couple of Extra Dry Platinums on New Year's Eve and haven't had a drop since.

Alot of people do, that's a fairly obscene amount of alcohol though. The 17 beers alone I could buy, but mixing drinks fucks you up regardless.

Obviously he couldn't if he's always drunk  Jowe said he was fine.

Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:14 pm

Mixing drinks doesn't really fuck you up instantly. It hits you later though.

Oh. I thought he meant he could handle it, as in he wouldn't be face down choking in a pool of his own vomit.

Hmmm, I haven't been drinking for very long, but I'm pretty sure 17 beers would leave me like the above. I dunno about shots though, I've handled every one I have tried pretty well.

Tue Jan 16, 2007 7:40 am

meh, it really depends how often you drink. personally i don't really buy the '17 beers + couple shots been fine' theory just because i've seen some heavy drinkers or big dudes get fucked straight up after 12 beers without taking any shots. not saying it's not possible to do 17 and a couple shots, but i'm hard pressed to believe anyone would be fine after that amount of alcohol, or liquid for that matter enters their body.

Tue Jan 16, 2007 8:10 am

If you would just review the global statistics, you would see that Lithuania is the second country in the world in "beer per person" after Chech Republic, if I'm not mistaken, but ive heard this.

Tue Jan 16, 2007 2:33 pm

^^^^i'm more inclined to believe Europeans drink more beer than anyone else too.

Tue Jan 16, 2007 11:17 pm

polish are better at drinking ;)

That sounds about right. Majority of my mates are spirit boys, i like nothing more than a nice "bee-ear". Ofcourse in saying that, i fit right in with the folk up here in NQ, somebody say something about my bogan "gene"?
