I need help with Columbia House

Postby Sac-1 on Sat Nov 25, 2006 9:01 am

Ok, here's the problem. I once registered for Columbia House since it said 5 DVD's for 49 cents. So I did not order them at the end but they still sent me the DVD's, with a $8.50 bill. I pay the bill and what do you know they send me a late payment fee. Today I went to check the mail and I got yet another DVD and they are telling me to pay 37 dollars. i've been trying to cancel the membership but their is no way of contacting them. I call the toll-free number and a woman says "We're sorry, but we could not contact the number. Please check the number.". I send them an e-mail and they either don't respond or send an offer.

What should I do?

Should've read the licensing agreement before signing up.

But the thing is, that I never even finished registering. So they can't do this. Besides, i'm not the only one, i found a whole website just for this problem with atleast like 40 complaints.

Don't pay.

Fuck'em. If you never finished your registration, then just take the movies. THey are basically sending them to you for free, unless some ass decided to pulla prank and register with your info.

Which would be the exact story I'd use, provided I never signed anything. If you've found an entire site dedicated to the issue, the site must contain a phone # of e-mail address other than the one you've got, for customer service. That's where I'd begin searching. Once you get a # that works, claim you've received nothing, never signed up for anything, and are outraged. If you're a younger kid (I think you are -- not trying to make fun of you here, I'm just trying to remember), possibly see if your mom can make the phone call, saying you're too young to sign up for things like this, etc. etc.

Something like this happened to me. I got the 11 cd's for a penny or whatever. Then I forgot to start sending their crap back. So I get a cd, and a bill. I send the cd back, stop sending their mail back to them, and they eventually just stop sending me stuff. They have sent some "we want you back" mail once a year from 2003-2005, then I actually got a call from them. I was able to get them to "delete" me from their database, which probably means they just kept my info, but wouldn't contact me anymore. Hope everthing works out for you, Sac-1.

Pdub, I have a question though. Doesn't the policy say something like you gotta purchase an x amount of CDs for the full price before being able to cancell the membership? Because I read the policy for DVD's and it says "Join the Club now and you'll get 5 DVDs for 49¢ each, plus special reduced shipping and handling of only 99¢ per DVD.
After that, all you need to do is buy 4 more DVDs at regular Club prices in the next 2 years... and that's it! How long you remain a member is entirely up to you, as you're free to cancel your membership at any time after buying your three selections.". So they want me to buy 5 more and then i'll be able to cancel. So should I just ignore them?

bigH0rt, I sent them a message saying i'm too young and they have to cancel my membership but no response yet.

I have signed up for that deal more than once. I remember them wanting me back, and I said why not, because they had some cd's that I wanted. I stopped sending their mail back, so they sent me a cd, I sent it back. This happened about 3 times. Then they start sending me mail less frequent, like once every two months instead of every month. I think because I bought a good amount of cd's from them before, that they just let it go, and they let me have'em.

You can also just say you never got the cd's. :P
