in response to ke7in's thread, I decided to post some new stuff I've done this year... didn't really want to post my stuff in his thread. I took two quarters of drawing this last school year in preparation for changing my major to studio art (from bio).

I posted this one before, but if you haven't seen it... Ricky Davis in pencil

And my final project in intermediate drawing... my huge Malcolm X piece which I eventually had custom framed which set me back like $400 USD:

All done in prisma (except the head & neck in pencil). I was thinking of doing one huge piece but decided to split it up into 6 different pieces because I liked the thought of having 6 different pieces of art that could each stand alone, but would work well all together. When I finished the head & body, I wasn't sure how long to make the arms and I was afraid of making the arms too long or short. I realized the head was about the same length as mine, so I used my own arms to make the arms here. When up on the wall, this thing is about 6 feet from left to right and 2 feet from top to bottom. Yes, I know the head doesn't match the body but again that's what happened in the picture-taking process.

Amazing stuff man... I wonder how long it takes for each drawing...
Right now Im trying to learn sketching on my own, got a few books... But I'm having a really hard time shading and apply lighting realisticly... Also stuff like clothes wrinkles etc, is there are way or technique to really do 'em properly?

That girl picture looks really nice, like my little cousin
Keep it up, and good luck with your future man... (Y)

well, when I really like something that I'm doing, I seriously OBSESS over it and after I finish, I look at it and find something else to fix. some of this stuff I did at work and it would take me a few 4 hour shifts to finish. it all depends on your pace and how fast/slow you like to work.

the only advice I can give is keep practicing. look at a lot of pictures and drawings and study, practice and try to emulate drawings you like.

and on the clothes/wrinkles, obviously on the first one I had to work hard to wrinkles. it was a pain, but I think the best way to do them is think of it like a "gradient" in photoshop  . the lightest colors are on the part that sticks out at you and the darkest are in the crevices and wrinkles.

They're great (Y) Do you favour the pencil at all (not in any homo-erotic way)? Because it seems like the pencil drawings are the best. The only one I don't like is the Malcolm X one from the head down. The head/face is so well done but the arms/chest seems very rushed.

haha I do favor the pencil (not in a homo-erotic way). that's always been my bread and butter, but this year I was forced into doing color and I'm still learning what I can do with it. and yeah on the Malcolm piece it's no coincidence that the head & neck were done in pencil and the rest in prismacolor pencils.

But I guess you have the right to do that since it's some of the best I've seen and I can't possibly draw for crap. Good job man.

Overall the pencil work is ok but you could work on the charcoal some more. Maybe use a variation of charcoal pencils along with the the vine (I'm assuming).

The best suggestion I can give is to pay more attention to your linework and also more importantly work on the tones. Make the dark darker and the lights lighter. There isnt much variation in the tones except in the fourth pic of that little girl which is probably your strongest piece in my eyes. Of course in the charcoals you have the really dark darks but you dont have much variation in between it and the lighter sections.

In regards to composition I will look at one piece specifically which is the charcoal still life with 4 glasses. The first thing you have to look at is how your eyes flow over the paper. Its good to give the viewer something for their eyes to follow (which covers the contents on the page) in your piece. You have the 4 glasses basically in the four corner which leaves the center of the page blank. Best to avoid blank spaces if there is no reason/purpose for it. Better usage of the paper regarding positioning could help it greatly. Also I dont know if the glasses should be the same size but if they are the perspective is a bit off as the ones closer are smaller than the ones in the back. The shadows also kinda off since if its the ame light source there should be more consistency in their direction.

Thats all for now. Looking forward to you sharing some more.

Your pencil work is very, very good. I love the patience, line weight and line direction that you use. Very nice!

Your charcoal work is not very good though, since they lack proportion, tonal range, a degree of sharpness, and line weight. Also, you really need to use the eraser as a tool that's just as important as the charcoal itself. Look at positive and negative space more and use the eraser more to control the tonal range.
