Mice on a plane - and that's no joke

Postby Cloudy on Wed Jul 26, 2006 4:00 am

There were dead mice in the oxygen masks, live mice under the seats and mice feces "throughout the whole aircraft," a whistle blower has told our Gannett colleagues at KSDK-TV in St. Louis about an American Airlines Boeing 767 that was brought there for maintenance.

In a video report you can watch here, the tipster tells KSDK that 900 to 1,000 mice may have been onboard. He also gave the station video he took with a hidden camera. The airline, in a written statement, said it found 17 live mice. (You can read KSDK's story here.)

According to KSDK, American kept flying the jet even after the first mice were discovered.

A safety expert tells the TV station that mice are a serious hazard because of the potential damage they can do to communications gear and controls.

As serious and disturbing as this news is, we know someone's going to make the connection if we don't. So here goes: Maybe this whole thing could have been prevented if they had some Snakes on a Plane.

Update at 11:30 a.m. ET, July 13: A reader e-mailed us to say that KSHB-TV in Kansas City had the story first. He's right. Here's a link to that station's report, which adds that there's evidence of some 20 plane crashes in recent years that were caused in part by damage done to the aircraft by rodents.

Read the comments

Might not sound too serious at first, but after thinking... What if the mice chewed the wires or anything? That's gonna cause another airplane accident. Plus, I wonder how they have mice on plane... Everything related to plane seems so secure and sanitary. :?

Anyway, don't forget to read the comments to this news... Lots of negative comments about American Airlines.

Slightly off topic, I'm sick to death of hearing about this Snakes On A Plane garbage. For starters what a retarded idea for a movie, secondly why have all of these (American) fanboys latched onto it suddenly and declared it the greatest movie to ever exist? I don't just mean Mazzocchi, but all over the internet there's threads about how bad ass this movie none of them have seen is going to be, purely because it stars Samuel L Jackson and has a stupid name. Everytime the preview of it is shown over here people are mostly like "wtf..." I read it got a standing ovation in the states when the preview first started showing

 Wow, that is sad. The last time I heard a movie or preview getting a standing ovation was the Passion of the Christ. Who would've thought a movie title would create a cult following?

Wait, I thought those people were being sarcastic?

I don't get how finding snakes on a plane makes for a great movie. You'd have to be blind and numb without feeling to notice some gignatic thing slither into a damn plane.

I did read about an airplane being fumigated for rats here in the Philippines (Manila). I thought it was just a few rats so no biggie, but the possibility for it to exist by the thousands in a single plane, damn. It gives me goosebumps.

I don't get it either. It sounds like a cheesy movie on some C-grade channel you'd not even bother reading the info of. Besides, Sam Jackson hasn't been bad ass for a long time. :?

Snakes on a Plane is a spoof movie, that's the whole point of it. It's supposed to look stupid.

I've never quite got it either. Maybe Mazz can come in here an explain everything in detail for us so maybe we can understand why people are rubbing nipples and gyrating hips over this flick.

Frankly, the spoof thing is getting old. Come up with some new concepts. Something gripping I'd like to watch.

These days it's remakes, comic books and spoofy comedies. Let's not forget the ever mushy chick flick that guys seem to be drooling over because some chick shows a bit of nipple.

Where are the days of the gangster/street flicks? Where are the Al Pacino's, Robert De Niro's and Joe Pesci's?

I shouldn't complain though, Running Scared was quite a kickass movie. But here again my point is proven, where are the Pesci's, De Niro's and Pacino's? We've got pretty boy Paul Walker enacting such a nice role? Blegh.

Ehm, end rant. Sorry.

Hype is a powerful machine my friend. It's nice to see some sane people still exist on the net though.

[Comic Book Guy] Greatest movie ever! [/Comic Book Guy]

Sorry to nitpick, but it's supposed to be "Greatest. Movie. Ever."

It just doesn't look right without the periods.
