Computer Tech Problems.. need help

Sun Jun 25, 2006 5:01 am

Anybody good with computers here? lol, well, hopefully there is, I need some help with my new comp.

Specs:
Intel P4 Dual Core 4m Cache 3.0ghz
1gb DDR2 667mhz ram
SATAII WD 160gb HD
Asus P5LD2 Motherboard
eVGA Nvidia GT6600 256 mb vid card
450W Power Supply

Problem:
I just got this comp a couple days ago, and have recently installed Need For Speed Most Wanted on my comp. The graphics are super fine, but 10 minutes into the game, my comp becomes loud. Loud enough to make it tough for me to differentiate the engine noise of NFSMW and my comp. Something's gotta be wrong... is my power supply insufficient? Or what other problems? Please help, thanks. :)

Is this the only game you are experiencing this? It's probably just your ventilator going crazy (graphics card?) because of the extra heat. But it would be wise to get someone with experience to check the vents.

You would get that noise if it was overclocked. Are the fans working good?

Give some more specs of youre vid card.
Is it PCIE?
Is it onboard memory or Hypervision?
How many pixel-pipelines?
Clock speed?
What kind of cooling heatsink or fans?

I don't know that many details about the vid card, but it's a PCIE... I opened up my comp to check it, and determined that it's the power supply... funny, because the shop told me 450W was sufficient enough for my system... and whenever I play any kind of game, the power supply area in my comp would feel pretty warm.

Well, as long as the computer is on, the power supply should get hot.

By "loud" I assume I mean your fans are making a lot of noise, not the sound of the game gets louder. It has to be because your system temp is going up and all the various fans are trying to cool things off.

If the computer runs fine, the noise is just an irritant and not an actual problem with the computer. If it shuts off though, it's overheating or the power supply is insufficient.

That card is more than powerful enough to run that game. I only have the 128MB 6600 and it was fine with the demo.

Okay, now I'm relieved lol. My computer has been running fine, it's just the loud noise of the fan really irks me. But then again, my case does have alot of vents. Anyways, thanks for the help everybody. (Y)

That's a pretty nice setup you've got there. All of the parts, were they packaged together or did you custom build it?

It's custom built. I got it for $840 CDN. Only reason it's under $1000 was because I had the CD Drive, Floppy Drive, DvD Writer, speakers, keyboard and mouse left over from my previous set up. :)

I dont know about that. I keep mine on 24 7 and its never hot. I use stock fans too. If its too loud try watercooling.

just replace the existing fans with quieter ones, thats what id do if they were pissing me off

Yeah, I'm thinking of taking it back to the comp shop and see what they can do about it. Thanks for all the input everyone. 8-)

You don't need to buy a new fan, if you can just download it.
