Terrible Humor: GloveGuy's Complaint

Postby GloveGuy on Fri Jun 23, 2006 8:04 am

I have some points to make.

- Can we ban the phrase 'lol'? It's overused, it's retarded, and we all know you're not laughing out loud. If you feel the need to use it after making a joke, it probably means the joke sucks.

- Just because you've stated the opposite of what is true, does not make it funny. Here's an example of someone who thought they were fucking hilarious in the "Players that would make good coaches" thread:

The Other Kevin wrote:Olliver Miller- Eating Coach
Alonzo Morning- How to inject steroids and not get caught
Shaq- Free Throw Assistant
Kobe- Shooting in Volume
Lebron- Clutch Time Situations

Oh, and another.

Scorer--20 wrote:Yep , because the point gouard knows all the plays and strategies , the PG commands the team .

Then , the point guards knows a lot of basketball.

PD : Shaq gonna be a great FISICAL CONDITIONING ASISTANT

Regarding the first one, how is that funny? That humor might've gotten laughs a century ago, but we all know Shaq's bad at free throws and Oliver Miller's fat. If you actually laughed at this, I feel sorry for you.

And the second one is just a terrible post. I'll forgive the poster for his awful grammar and spelling mistakes, but the first two sentences are beyond retarded. I mean, is this something we don't already know? Does Mr. Hooked on Phonics think he's enlightening us? And then he caps off the post with a terrible joke. The thing is, I laughed at how pathetic it was. Really, bud, we all knew you were bad at English, but we didn't know you were 10 years old.

CK wrote:Isiah Thomas (not)

This shit is just as bad as spam.

From the "Wade vs Jordan" thread:

Silas wrote:Howabout whos the next Mikan?

From the "New Hawks Logo!!!" thread:

Joe. wrote:Well, I think they made the new logo on purpose to put it on coffee cups

From the "So what was in that bowl?" thread:

Fitzy wrote:its probably a bowl for all their dirty washing

This is just skimming the surface. These are just examples from the past few days. It's on-going, popping up all the time. For some reason, people think they're impressing others by making jokes, when they're really just embarassing themselves. It's pathetic to read.

It should really be treated like spam. Making an awful joke is just as bad as complimenting someone on a joke by saying 'lmao' or 'lol.' I mean, you think I couldn't make these jokes? To some really think they have a talent for this? This shit should be enforced.

The start to ending terrible posts is by ending terrible jokes. lol

I've had discussions regarding this with Jae, everyone's a funny man on the forums these days. Complaining about it isn't something that'll help given I find it quite impossible to ban phrases like "lol". Fighting stupid humor is a pain in the ass and not something you can stop.

Unlike spam...

I must agree...except for the "fuck me" part. You get it right?....cause i'm trying to say i'm not gay. Hilarious.

But seriously...gloveguy you're being quite anal about this. No pun intended even though that's.... Hilarious.

I'm not nit-picking. I just find it hard to believe that people actually find some of the things they say funny. Maybe it's an American thing, maybe foreigners have a different sense of humor. The fact is, it's neither a) original, or b) insightful.

I mean, you don't hear me complaining about grammar, and you don't hear me complaining about the spam, but this is littering the forum. See the thing is, I attribute this with people who have nothing insightful to say, but since they feel the need to post, they think up a lame joke off the top of their head, which they really don't even find funny, and post it in what should have remained a serious and civilized discussion.

If you have something funny to say, say it. But by all means, keep the lame jokes to yourself, because no one's laughing, and I doubt that you truly are too.

Jackal, I know that banning 'lol' is not possible and pretty extreme. I just raised the question to begin my point.

I just ignore it now, everyone's a comedian but unfortunately no one's laughing. What I especially hate is if people use the exact same joke as someone else in a thread without realising someone else had already said it. Andrew and I have discussed this, well replace "discussed" with "made fun of the perpetrators" and it's more accurate.

The best we can really do without being complete ogres about it is to delete the absolute worst nonsense posts, especially those that have little or nothing to do with the topic. I know where you're coming from but if we're overly strict about it, that's not going to make for a friendly atmosphere and I don't want that to happen.

That said,

GloveGuy wrote:If you have something funny to say, say it. But by all means, keep the lame jokes to yourself, because no one's laughing, and I doubt that you truly are too.

I do think this is solid advice, because it can get quite disruptive to discussions especially when a whole lot of posts just quoting the joke with "lol" or the lol smiley follow it without any other on-topic comment. The latter is definitely spamming and we will simply delete that at our discretion.

On top of that, my advice would be to not worry about being the funniest or the most popular or the most active. Simply be yourself, contribute to discussions and set a good example for others. You'll probably find yourself a lot more popular for it. :)

In my opnion, that thread is a great example of people trying to be funny but failing miserably.

Both attempts of 'humour' were terrible. People try so hard to be 'funny' or a Jackal and flame or ridicule others in an attempt to get some laughs.
Not saying Jackal does, just using him as an example.

One question.Did you dunk with a basketball or a baseball, tennis ball etc... Razz .One thing is to get up to the rim without the ball another is to go with the ball.Ok two questions How high can you reach the backboard?

Who are you a member of the and1 team or Harlem Globetroters?9'0 thats like 3 metres. And if you dunked with a basketball that means you had to be like 9'5 up to get a chance to dunk.Just get that bullshit back to the farm, because we ain't buying it here.

Wtf? Honestly, I didn't laugh once.

Just my two cents.

I see what you're saying Gloveguy. And i don't disagree with you. It's the fact that it's raised as an issue that i find mind boggling.

Does really affect you at all? Do you really care? If i see bad humour i usually ignore it (or light-heartedly let them know they're a dickhead). Why create a thread?

And what's with this attitude of "These people's attempts at humour are blah blah blah"... I don't know really what to say about except that i don't understand the problem. OMG Call the police, certain members aren't funny enough, they should just stop breathing.

I don't know about everybody else, but i don't "try to be funny". It's more just chilling out and saying whatever i want, because i can. I'm not here to impress people or make anyone feel a certain way.

I realise you didn't direct this thread at me, i'm just pointing out how i go about posting, and i assume the others gnawled in this thread probably do too.

It wasn't even a joke more bitterness but go ahead and sue me..

But seriously shit happens on internet forums, it's there on every forum. I'm annoyed by a lot of things on here too but it's no use complaining because it will come back when new posters come here or other annoying this pop up..

Holy shit, at least I was nice about it. This is helping to prove his point.

P.S.- Read everywhere on this forum, Caps Lock does not help get your point accross, it just makes you look like a retard.
