Well, i think this will be a quite interesting topic to discuss.
Where do you stand on internet literacy? I know some people get annoyed with peoples spelling mistakes and correct them (Cy and his padawan CableGuy) and some people don't give a shit. When is it ok to talk like "yo jugs ey i fked ya mum" and when is it appropriate to talk ...humanly?
Basically, where do you stand on internet literacy? I find it easier to type like this as i know if its more legible and more clear more people will understand what you're on about and you're more likely to get a better response.
On the other hand when you post like "u iz de gay men" i tend to skip over the post because i don't understand or think its retarded.
I think in an msn/aim environment its ok to talk like that because its easier & faster.
So..whats your opnion on it?
Mon May 29, 2006 10:55 pm
Spelling mistakes I can handle, I
absolutely fucking despise this whole "ZOMG ORLY L33T SKILLZ PWND!!!" type of shit. That bothers me alot more these days than it used to, now it's got to the point where if anyone uses it with me *cough*jugs*cough* I usually don't bother replying
Mon May 29, 2006 10:57 pm
I don't mind the internet slang/literacy etc... I just use it whenever I'm bored. The best abbreviation is WBBS? though.
Mon May 29, 2006 11:31 pm
I find it easier to type with proper literacy, but not fussed if people don't use proper puncuation. As long it's clear in what they're trying to say, and it doesn't hurt my eyes.
I don't understand people that go out of their way not to spell words properly. Like "dat", "lyk", "reely", "iz", etc. It just doesn't make sense to me. It's not like it's more efficient to type it that way. It'd probably take longer, for fuck's sake, to think of how to spell it the wrong way.
I can handle "u" though, cos that generally is much faster.
Tue May 30, 2006 12:04 am
I'm getting kinda tired of people using the hackers/ghettos internet slang for jokes.. it's not that funny anymore.
Apart from that, I always try to make as little spelling and grammar mistakes as possible when typing english, probably because it's not my primary language and I take pride in my 'english' skills or something.
I'm not really annoyed by spelling mistakes from others except 3th because the does it on purpose and Mazz' a
nny.

I hate internet slang and it pisses me off when people use it. They are always talking like they are some kind of e-gangster.

Agree with that.
Their seems to be two kinds of e-language, ones the e-gangster talk with words such as "yo", "sup dawg", "mah homiez", "beyaaatch", "datz da shit brotha" etc and then theirs the even more annoying talk those teeny boopers use like "OMG" "MwaahzzZ" , "NeOne" and its annoys the hell out of me when I see a girl saying "I'm Soo Bootiful" or typing with lower case and uppercase for every fucking word "hI bAbiiII, yOu waNNa LiCK mY PuSSy TonItE".
Spelling doesnt bother me(I'm not the best at it) but punctuation and spacing does cause its a stress on the eyes when someone types without any full stops or paragraphs.
hey dude did you see the game yesterday we did real well Kobe Bryant was the best dude he like scored 50 points and did you see that shot in the 3rd quarter oh yeah did you see the steal in the 4th when we were down by 5 and that dunk by Shaq was great but no way it could have beat out Bryants 360 did you see that it was somewhere in the 1st and Shaq was like with his mouth down but Bryant came through the lane and stomped one on Wade and Wade went backwards and Bryant was like boo yeah bitch and then did you see the play by Wade.
Not the best example but something like that^ would annoy me.

I tend to lose all respect for one's opinions when they start talking like a gangster.
Tue May 30, 2006 2:22 am
its only good if u don't have much time to type or u r mad slow
I don't think some people talk like that on purpose. I just think they are dumb.
I never use puncuation.

wa ar u takin aboot!?!
Yeah, it gets on my nerves as well.

I hate illiteracy on the Internet and in real life. Spelling mistakes are bad, but grammar mistakes bother me more. I don't expect everyone to know how to spell every word, but basic principles of grammar do not change and I don't think enough people follow them. Subject verb agreement and pronoun antecedent agreement are two that really annoy me. Most people dont even know what they are though.
Yeah I correct people in rl... sue meh.

I tend to be a little more on the extreme because I'm a perfectionist when it comes to sp eling wrods, but my biggest gripe is not only with stupid abbreviations, gangsta dawg yo slang, or tEeNy-bOpPeR_OMG crap, but what Stevesanity mentioned about the sentences that doesn't have any punctuation! I can't read them regardless of perfect spelling and grammar. It violates the number one rule of grade 1 writing. How sad.

I hope that was intentional.

The worst is long posts that aren't seperated into paragraphs. And they usally have plenty of run-ons.
I can handle a 'g2g' here or a 'omfg' there, but e-bonics (weird how that works) isn't my cup of tea.

Agree on that one. Plus I also hate how most of the girls would talk on MSN when they try to sound all cute and stuff with their "lolz omgz lyk u totalli tink so?" kind of typing.
Tue May 30, 2006 8:19 am
When people type like that (stevesanity's example), I don't read it. I usually get a headache by the time I'm finished if I try anyway.

hehe, but on topic, i think its much faster and easier to write u instead of you, etc, beside, everyone understands u.

I like "wtf" but I also appreciate proper sentences. If it's someone I know in real life, I can tolerate their online talk, provided they talk well in real life. I think I pick the people I talk to well, because I don't usually get that nonsense.
It kind of makes me angry, though. One thing they always get you to do as you grow up, in school, is practice writing. Obviously, the more you do of something, the better you will get at it. Well, more and more kids are writing more and more these days, thanks to the internet. It's the perfect venue to perfect proper spelling and grammar skills, not to mention typing. But the kids just exercise their laziness once again (haha, that's a sort of paradox, isn't it) and type the bullshit shortform jargon. It actually makes them worse in school.
In conclusion, I think internet crappy literacy is OK, provided it is not used in normal life, and isn't used when talking to me.

I don't care how they type it; I'd be the happiest man alive if a girl actually said that to me.

when i 1st came 2 teh NLSC i used 2 type leik this then i realized it looked really stupid so i stopped doin it
I still catch a "leik" or a "teh" in my posts but I try my best to edit them out so I give the illusion that I am smart
again...

Guess where I stand on this.
hey dude did you see the game yesterday we did real well Kobe Bryant was the best dude he like scored 50 points and did you see that shot in the 3rd quarter oh yeah did you see the steal in the 4th when we were down by 5 and that dunk by Shaq was great but no way it could have beat out Bryants 360 did you see that it was somewhere in the 1st and Shaq was like with his mouth down but Bryant came through the lane and stomped one on Wade and Wade went backwards and Bryant was like boo yeah bitch and then did you see the play by Wade.
I hate that the most, or even when they use periods, but not capitals. I can stand wtf? or ZOMG! or stuff like that, but only if it's the only word like that. Kind of like 'Wtf? That's crazy' is okay, but "Wtf? tats cra-z' is gay.

For me, I am able to handle it to a certain extent. As said by probably everyone else in this thread, I can read it if it isnt too bad with a few da or cuz, but heres an example of what I can barely read, like this: "Yo min i goin 2 da mall 2day buh i unno if mah gurl iz cummin also i dn fink she iz." That is just flat out horrible. I can barely read it and it fucking hurts my eyes. I think that there should be a little lineincy (spelling?) as long as it looks almost exactly like how it should be typed (ie. "I'm going to the mall with my friends." "Im goin to da mall with my friends."-thats tolerable, but this is just stupid-"im goin 2 da mal wit mai frenz"). By the way heres an example of some names on my msn thats just damn stupid and is barely readable, not to mention it also reflects the literacy level of how they type:
1: ˚º†•$δa TuFF℮§t tÏиK℮яB℮ℓℓ**♥XO.αиdαиd [(yn)[яомέo&juℓℓiet‹з.]] DA DANCE WUS SEXI1 LOL ME & MARISSA R DA BEST GRINDERS EVERR...
2: 'Vŧ¡M--[§1K W¡T¡T](%)ÅKÅ(%)[Ð_¥UÑg1] EXTREEEEEME(^)hbd SAM & ANNIE(G)
3: .[§1K W¡T¡T].(%).[Ð_¥UÑg1].(%).[KL劚iC].(W)RIP KETHEES(w)MOUBIN(W)
4: »]¦[٠©٠ħ٠u٠’][‘٠ħ٠ǟ٠й٠]¦[«
5: - ––––•(-•ॐÞüñ|{ǐέ ѕңảгМά•-)•–––– - Ǻmåñdè® gåñg$†è® $hº®†îè{Þ®ºµd †º bè Hîñdµ}------->happy valintines(L) day
6: ·#RIP KETHEES(f) Puйќїз·$39(L)Venita(L) [Łş]·$1 (L)I LOVE GWENDYLEETA MOST AS POSIBLE({)(l)
As told earlier, its almost impossible to read what these people type on MSN.
EDIT: By the way, if anyone thinks I'm brown after looking at that list, I ain't. I'm chinese and the people I found with fucked up names just happened to be brown. No racism intended, I have as many brown friends as friends of any other race.

Internet slang and shorthand is fine on MSN and other chat programs but I find it's very distracting in any kind of serious debate and discussion here in the Forum. I'm not a fan of the l337 stuff either, but one of my biggest online pet peeves is the use of "LOLOLOLOLOL" or "LMAOOOOO" or any other butchered shorthand. Unless "Laughing Out Loud Out Loud Out Loud Out Loud Out Loud" really does mean you find something really amusing.
