The "Post Your Football Manager Game" Thread

Sat May 27, 2006 1:12 am

Andreas and I have been talking a bit on MSN about our FM save games, so I figured others who play the game can post about their team here.

I'm playing as Strasbourg in France, they're not a bad side... finished 11th the season before I took over. There's some good young players but no real stars, and very little defence. The board gave me 1.7 million pounds for transfer funds which I guess was enough, I made a few signings...mostly to strengthen the defence:

Carlos Martins from Sporting for 75k
- Complete bargain, he's been starting in the midfield all season and is averaging 7.19. He's only 23 years old aswell.

Lorenzo Amoruso from Blackburn for 35k
- I was hoping he could start in the defence but he's been injured alot and useless when he plays. Really old, will be cut at the end of the season.

Fabian McCarthy from Kaizer Chiefs for 60k
- Another bargain signing, he's been probably our best defender all season averaging 7.13 in all competitions. Not very young but good and cheap.

Gift Leremi from Orlando Pirates for 140k
- Bought purely for potential, only 20 years old at the time and looks fairly decent. He's gone from being worth 80k at the Pirates to 2.9 million here.

Stefan Por Pordarson from Norrkoping for 40k
- He has a weird name with lots of symbols in it, that's mostly why I bought him but he's actually been a useful utility player.

We're coming 11th at the moment but only 3 points separate 3rd from 11th. Our goalkeeper was injured, then our back-up goalie so we're stuck using a 3rd stringer who isn't much good.

The board said they'd inject more funds if I proved myself with them, we were sitting 4th at the time so they gave me an extra 7 million to spend. I'm not sure whether I should buy more depth or get 1 or 2 impact players. I'm looking at a goalkeeper called Kamil Contofalsky who looks great, but might end up costing me about 3 or 4 million so I'm not sure.

I've enquired about alot of players... Raul Bravo, Juan Seba Veron, Olivier Kapo, Ryan Babel, Jefferson Farfan, Massimo Maccarone amongst others. If I can manage one of those guys I'll be happy, especially if it's Babel, Farfan or Bravo.

Any ideas on how to spend the money let me know, I feel like I've won the lottery

Havent played FM in a while but I been trying to pick it back up since last night. Funny that you post this thread. In the mean time I been playing Fifa Manager and Champ Manager but I know FM is better but my pc doesnt seem to share the view. Once I get going I'll post some stuff.

Ajax accepted an offer of 5.5 million over 2 years for Ryan Babel... he's only 18, can play in the midfield or up front and has really good attack ratings.

I'm trying to decide between signing Noe Pamarot and Raul Bravo... leaning towards Pamarot, will edit this post when more happens.

Sat May 27, 2006 1:29 am

Go with youth. Are you looking to throw any of the 2 in your starting 11?

Sat May 27, 2006 1:35 am

Yeah both definitely. The team is awful defensively so Pamarot will jump straight in, and I don't really have a capable left winger/striker so I'll use Babel there. I'd say Babel will instantly be my best player apart from Alexander Farnerud.

Have officially wrapped up the signings of Pamarot and Babel, won't get them until January but I really can't wait for Babel to start playing. I also signed a goalkeeper for 350k, he looks really good. I'd forgotten how addictive this game is.

Currently in 2009 with Lyon, but I'm playing CM 01/02 (best game of the series :D). I won the French Championship 7 times in a row, winning also many domestic cups (French Cup, League Cup and Champions Trophy)

In Europe it's a bit harder: I managed once to reach the UEFA finals (after finishing 3rd in my Champions League's group), but I only reached once the Champions League quarter finals, last year, Thierry Henry scoring a 90 min goal against AC Milan to help us finishing second of our group.

I acquired slowly but surely some superstars: Thierry Henry, Louis Saha, Willy Sagnol, Sébastien Frey, my latest acquisition being Joe Cole, bought 15M€ from Arsenal

edit: just saw Jae's latest post, just one thing to add: Image Alexander Farnerud Image

Do you mind if I post my CM 2006 info since I cant get my pc to run FM 2006? I wont wait for an answer anyways.

I am playing with Barcelona (start summer 2005) and have made a couple moves to sure up the team.

First move was obtaining Toure from Arsenal to sure up my back line. Puyol got injured and was out for a couple months and I needed an extra player to add depth to the team. He's young so I will have him for a little while (23 yrs I think).

I then obtained Ze Roberto from Bayern. He was shown on a list of people interested in joining my club and I never really liked Motta playing LW for me. Immediately got a place in my starting 11.

MY BIGGEST SIGNING. i wanted to start off my new managerial job with a bang so I went in search of a young, world class striker who could partner up front with Eto'o. His name is Zlatan Ibrahimovic! I initially wanted to go for Adriana but he wouldnt sign since he was pretty happy where he was. Henry was a bit too old for my liking. I like the young players because I like to keep the team intact over a number of years.

Zlatan used up almost all of my transfer budget so I was pretty dry after that deal. The cpu got another player for me however (I need them to help out with mini-deals and renewal). I got Munitis from Deportivo and he is solid coming off the bench occasionally.

I initially tried for Gerrard to replace Xavi in my Defensive Midfield but he wouldnt make the move. Thats the guy I really wanted to complement my AM Ronaldinho.

--------ST-------ST--------
-----------------------------
---------AM-----------------
LW----------------------RW
----------------DM----------
----D------------------D----
----------D------D----------
-------------GK-------------

Thats it for now. I had an amazing start to the season with a 5-1 victory.

Sat May 27, 2006 4:11 am

I'm cheating my way up with Colo-Colo (Y) Using MCFM 06, I changed my players, the budget, everything :P I've won the Libertadores 2 years in a row, the league 3 times, America's Cup, etc. When I'll get bored, I'll start another one, and won't change anything. But for now I'll enjoy the success

Sat May 27, 2006 7:49 am

Woohoo!

Well I finally got FM2006 to work again but unfortunately I gotta go out now so when I start playing I'll post transactions and such. (y)

Sat May 27, 2006 8:18 am

You guys should buy my two former classmates and teammates (a local club we used to play for, I quit and they still ball), back in primary school. Nikola Veljovic and Samir Sisic, 19 old defender and striker, I guarantee for them  .

Sat May 27, 2006 12:35 pm

I initially wanted to go for Adriana but he wouldnt sign since he was pretty happy where he was.

I'm glad the sex change went well for him :P

Played on a few games, lost 3 and won 1 I think. This goalkeeper thing really hurt, we've been losing like 3-1, 4-1. Our second stringer came back from injury, and we finally beat Lens 1-0. Since Babel is coming in, these are a few of the other youngsters that could end up being really good:

Rudy Carlier, SC, 19 years old
He's the first striker off the bench for us, he doesn't get a great deal of game time but when he comes on he looks pretty dangerous. Has 3 goals in 9 games and scored the winner against Lens.

Ricardo Faty, DM/AMC, 19 years old
Called up from the Under 18's because he got too old, but he was pretty much dominating there. He can play a whole bunch of positions but has only made one appearance in the first team.

Gift Leremi, AM LC, 21 years old
Signed from a South African team, he looks full of promise and scored a great long range goal on his debut. He's playing on the left wing at the moment but only averaging 6.33.

Alexander Farnerud, AM RLC FC, 21 years old
Probably the best player on the entire team, at 21 years old. Rennes have shown an interest in him but they can get stuffed, I won't sell him for less than 15 million.

Jean-Christophe Lourde, DC, 17 years old
Hasn't made an appearance in the first team but is by far the best defender for the under 18's. Already worth 500k at 17, averaging 7.67.

Nourdine Assami, DC DM, 18 years old
I'm not 100% sold on this guy, but he's playing great for the U/18's. Two goals, one assist and 2 MOM's in 4 games is amazing for a defender.

Thomas Zerbini, DR, 16 years old
Has fantastic attributes for someone so young and is playing really well for the U/18's. He'll probably be playing in the first team within 2 years.

Abdelkader Bendjilali, AML C, 18 years old
He was tearing apart the U/18's to the point where I called him straight upto the first team and played him. He was doing ok until he got injured and his performances have dropped since.

Mustafa Durak, ST, 17 years old
Has scored 9 goals in 13 games, with 3 assists. He's the only real striking prospect we have in the under 18's so hopefully he'll pan out well.

I've also confirmed the signing of Labinot Harbuzi from Feyenoord... he's 19, can use both feet and did well when I took him on trial. I think we've got the youngest team in France all round.

Edit: Ugh... went up 2-0 against Ajax in the UEFA Cup after 15 minutes, they pulled one back but we scored again and went into half time up 3-1. They score right after half time, then with 10 minutes left RYAN FUCKING BABEL the guy I've just signed comes on for them and scores the equaliser :x

  I can imagine how pissed you would feel. What would have been worse is if one of your guys injured him.

I played one game so far but I had no choice but to restart it. The only reason I chose Barca was for Ronnie and Eto'o and both of them got injured in the first half of our first preseason match and are missing for months (not days, months!!!!). I hate doing it but my hand was forced.

Sun May 28, 2006 4:23 pm

Ok so here is an FM2006 update on my managerial role with FC Barcelona.

I have adapted two main formations I have found on sortitoutsi. 2 versions of the brazilian 4-4-2.

Image

Image

They are actually pretty good. It gives you realistic scores and you pass the ball around fluidly. I was a defensive version of it but it was only once to Betis in the Spanish cup (?). I was desperate to defend that 1-0 so I could go home and finish them off. I couldnt ask for more.
Read about them here-----> http://www.sortitoutsi.net/fm2006/index ... ws_id=1830

Transfers

I felt I did a very good job finding some hidden gems to add depth to my team. I never really wanted the big names like Adriano since it takes away from my competition. The board got pissed though because I didnt get a superstar like they requested so they went out and got Ashley Cole from Arsenal even though I used up the exact amount allocated to the budget. Thats on them. He isnt bad but I already had a nice young guy playing his position. Oh well.

Ashley Cole- D/WB (Arsenal)- 22.5 ml (Very good wingback are needed in this formation so I'm not really mad at the board anymore.)

Fabio Grosso- D/WB/M (Palermo)- 9 ml

Edu- DM (Ceara)- 1.1 ml

Alexis Sanchez- AM/F (Cobreloa)- 850K (16 yr old talent)

Freddy Adu- AM/F (DC United)- 4 mil (I think I paid too much but I was getting tired of negotiating)

Dirk Kuyt- ST (Feyenoord)- A whopping 30 mil (I had lost out in negotiations with some other strikers so I gave him an offer he couldnt refuse. I was desperate).

I got rid of some no name players + Larsson because he was just too old for my liking. The oldest person I got was like 27 I believe. Everyone else was 25 or under.

My record is 5 wins and 1 draw (3 preseason, 2 cup and 1 league). I took in 4 goals while scoring 18 goals. I had one blowout game where I beat some no-name 7-1 (the 1 was a penalty).

Check out a young Brazilian called Whoshington, he'd be great for a big club like Barca...

Ok I think I am gonna start over but I wont delete the earler post. I'll use that as example of how not to mismanage funds. I dont liek to think I am Jose Mourinho. I'' post the moves I make and hopefully they will be better. :)

Mon May 29, 2006 1:32 am

Alexis Sanchez- AM/F (Cobreloa)- 850K (16 yr old talent)

Get the fuck outta here  See? Chile's a beast. :cheeky:  :headbang: :applaud:

Mon May 29, 2006 7:22 am

Nice!!!! I didnt't expect anyone on the forums to play Football Manager.

I always find it hard to start with a pretty bad team and work my way to the top, I usually just dont bother saving it and just play my Man Utd game.

I'm in the 2009/10 season and my team is pretty sweet:

GK - Ochoa
DR - Glen Johnson
DL - Heinze
DC - Ferdinand
DC - Vidic
MR - Walcott
ML - Ronaldo
MC - Bodmer
MC - Nolan
FC - Fernando Genro
FC - Rooney

I also have a host of good subs such as Ingebretsen, Pineda, Saha and Yaya Toure.

Can anyone give me any suggestions of any teams I could start with?

Mon May 29, 2006 7:34 am

Valencia maybe. :)

So here are my new signings for My barcelona team which I started over. I am quite content with them and I have a little money left over. :D

Its just 3 guys anyway. :P

-Lukas Podolski ST 19 mil (Koln) Playing alongside Eto'o in my brazilian formation. He missed our first D1 match because he just came off a training injury and was fatigued. Looking forward to great things from this "Wonderkid".

-Fabio Grosso WBL (Palermo) again. He did such a good job last time that I went out and got him again for the 9 mil. He hasnt given me anything less than an 8 so I cant complain. The formation seems to be perfect for him and Belletti.

-Got a young 16 yr old goalie named Vincent Degre from Metz. Good stats for his age so he's my little project.

I am really trying to get Rafinha during the next transfer window and other than that I dont see any other big deals except maybe a good DM.

Mon May 29, 2006 11:02 am

Vincent Degre is a well known future FM legend, so good find with that.

As for a team to start with, I'd suggest Porto, Sporting or Benfica... there's very few player restrictions in Portugal and you can sign Brazilians at any age.

Mon May 29, 2006 1:42 pm

I gave up on that Brazilian 4-4-2 because it didnt make me feel like a footballing genius. I decided I wanted to make my own formation from scratch and I did. It has been very successful so far and this was verified by my 2-0 defeat of Real Madrid (top of the table clash) where I even missed a penalty. The defense is very strong and the attacks are very precise. It was funny that I won even though I was outshot by Madrid but all their shots were long range cuz they couldnt get any penetration. Its a very odd variation of the 4-5-1.

EDIT: I just narrowly beat Juventus in the Champions cup with a 2-1 scoreline. If there is one thing I dont like its that the other team seems to always get twice as much shot attempts as I do. The shots on target are about the same though. Oh well, it just means more tweaking. I think I might switch to 4-3-1-2.

EDIT: I switched to the 4-3-1-2 and its very good. I get about 50% possession every games and 3 shots to the oppositions 2. I havent lost in league play and my record is 12 wins and 1 draw. I have a couple of 1.0 games in there somewhere also. I feel so proud of my formation and I love the way they move the ball around the field. Podolski took a while to get in the flow but now his goalscoring pace has picked up. Eto'o leads La Liga in that department and is also my highest rated player ahead of Ronaldinho. Just barely though.

Tue May 30, 2006 10:17 pm

I'm, playing as my home town team Öster in the Swedish league. The first season I was expected to go up to the highest league, and so I did. Now I'm four games into the second season, and so far I've got one win and three losses. The pundits expect me to go back to the first division, and the board will be real happy if we manage to stay in the premiere division. So this season will be a bit of a challenge..

I haven't really made any major changes to the team so far, for some reason; other than that I sold my starting left midfielder for £ 2,2mil, and was able to sign another good one to fill his place, and still have about £ 1,7mil left (which is huge considering I started off with £ 40k ). Oh well, hopefully I'll be able to avoid relegation and prove the pundits wrong, and be able to build upon the team now that I got a much larger budget..

Wed May 31, 2006 12:17 am

Had a pretty big 2-1 win over Paris, we'd lost a few games previous so I'm happy about that.

I've made a couple more transfers...

Julien Gorius: 20 years old, AMRC (300k)
Young French guy who has great attributes and will most likely end up getting the starting spot on the wing ahead of Pascal Johansen who I've never been impressed with.

Daniel Tozser, 20 years old, MLC (150k)
Looks decent, just gives me some extra cover in the midfield since apart from Gift Leremi I've really got no one who can play on the left.

Ekene Ezenwa, 21 years old, ST (400k)
Has amazing attacking attributes, I don't know if he'll start but I'm guessing he'll get the bench spot ahead of Rudy Carlier who hasn't done much lately.

Considering a few young South Americans, I want to wait until the transfer window opens so I know exactly how much I have to spend. Can't wait for Babel to arrive, his attributes have exploded in the last few months:

Image

Wed May 31, 2006 8:45 am

Babel's stats are looking good.(y)

You know whats funny? Ok, I will tell you.

I was pressuring Sevilla (?) over and over about Dani Alves because I want him to play in my back right and he finally gave in and said he is considering his options after Sevilla have been denying me for months. This morning I wake up and I find out that Dani Alves IS really onsidering a move to Barcelona (real world). I must have magic powers eh?

Wed May 31, 2006 1:15 pm

 wanna start a game as Aston Villa and begin pressuring Ronaldinho for me?

I've picked up this awesome young Brazilian called Everton... he's 20 years old, costing me 1.6 million but he can play wing back, midfield and up front all on the left. There's one or two others I'm considering, there's some 2nd Division French team who are making a nice run in the league tournament thing, they're in the semi finals so I'm raiding them and trying to pick up their best players.
