An example of how NOT to post/tips for new posters.

I am not meaning to bash this person individually with anything I say. It's just a perfect example of how one should not post. I'm sure he/she is a very nice person, they could probably just use a bit of a crash course on posting politics.

All of this member's posts are either "(Y)" " :o " or copying/pasting the same shoe request into just about EVERY patchmaker's announcement thread. I understand wanting to tell someone "good work" on a patch that you find appealing. But if you feel the need to express that respect, why would you not actually SHOW the respect by typing out your reaction to it, what you like about it, etc, instead of using a single emoticon.

Also, if you have a request... use the request forum for pete's sake! If you absolutely must request something from an individual, use their request thread if they have one, but if not- there is a private message feature for a reason. Use it. (Y)

This is alot of what's wrong with the state of the forum now. People post for the sake of posting, and for post count "e-peen". This is a DISCUSSION forum, so discuss! :) You'll find people will be MUCH more responsive to you if you follow the rules/guidelines, respect the moderation crew, communicate properly, and don't act like a complete turd. Once you get into the swing of posting properly, people will respect you- and you'll probably find you'll make friends (and some of those friends might be able to do your patch requests for you).

Also- there are an awful lot of threads (a very high percentage of the new threads posted, actually) that have already been discussed, or in many cases, stickied. A sticky is a thread that is sort of 'pinned' to the top of a forum, so that it is always near the top.

(From the NLSC Forum Rules: Try not to post a topic that has already been answered several times, or has a dedicated "sticky" thread.

Whenever possible, please search for an old topic before asking for a help on a patching issue, bump up old topics to ask for help, or use the provided sticky thread dedicated to an issue. Although we aim to be a helpful community, posting the same answers and guides over and over again does get tiresome. Please make use of the Search feature. If a fellow forum member has the time, they might point you in the direction of an older thread)

I (and most people) realize that the search function doesn't always reveal everything we think it should, and it can be a bit overwhelming when a million results pop up, but try to dig around a bit anyway before posting a new question. Odds are extremely good that there's a Sticky on the subject.

You have the right to learn, nobody expects you to be a perfect poster right off the bat. Hell, I was horrible. All we expect is that you learn and respect the rules.

To wrap this up.... Respect= key.

Welcome to the community.

Fucking shit what a moron  .People just don't understand its not how many post you have, its quality posts.A lot of people think that they will have respect, because of their post cont.Like mentioned before you have to give respect to earn respect. The definition of that is:
-you don't spam
-you show respect to others
-you make quality post

And if you are worth of respect you will get it.Not like some show up here and they think they automaticly get respect, but it doesn't work like that.

And what do you call what you do? Excessive Commenting?

Fri May 26, 2006 5:58 pm

Nah, it's just commenting.

Fri May 26, 2006 9:52 pm

The past 5 posts have been spam too you retards.

Anyway about that guy, there's tons more of those kinda posters. All they do is request, over and over again. Oh yeah and bitch about how they want stuff to be released.

I've noticed a lot of posts going around saying "please don't spam" or "read the rules please" like some sort of Forum vigilante group has been formed, it shits me and it is intimidating. I'm bound to get eaten up by the likes of Ryan., Pera and others.

To me, the forum vigilante is what makes this forum boring to me nowadays, I can not have fun without seeing some random NLSC veteran who joined in May 2005 (yes  ) telling others what to do.

:?

I think he's at least trying to point people in the right direction, sure he or most of us may not be the best example to what we may preach but if you have your ideals set right then thats a bonus. It would suck if he just posted a smiley after saying what a stupid fuck or just made a post without reading whats going on. Didnt think it was against the rules or something totally wrong for someone to tell people that way to be a better/good poster, plus I dont think the date you joined really matters just like your post count. You can be part of a forum for 5 years and still be a crap contributor compared to someone who joined 6 months ago.

At another forum I go to they have a "Great Post" function, where you press a button if you think a post is great, it PM's the person telling them so and this little counter under their location tells how many "Great Posts" they've had... it might prevent smiley posts and "LOL's!" or "I agree"'s.

That'll be sweet if the NLSC can adopt it. A more advanced version of dotorg's Karma.

I'd like that too. The only risk that it could get abused/misused.

Tuomas wrote:I'd like that too. The only risk that it could get abused/misused.

Im not sure if modification to it is possible but maybe leave it so that only specific members can use it, maybe a list of 25 to 50 members that are regarded by the people that count here (Andrew, Matthew, Jae, Yohance, You etc and others like Colin, The Black Death, Donatello and Cyanide etc) as good members and people you could trust with a system like this.

It could be used as an indicator for banning too, people that get an overload of bad post votes or whatever could be considered for banning/or banned. :?

I know this is a huge community and pretty hard for the 25-50 man group to vote on everyones post value but with careful choice I'm sure that group will prove sufficient and help get rid of spamming and just maybe by the stroke of a miracle make spammers become actual forum members.

Good Post. (y)

Me- Bad Post. (n)

edit: It sounds like a good idea and it doesnt really have to be limited to 50 or so since there may be many more good posters around and it shouldnt turn into some elitist thing. We can also write up a little guideline on how to identify good/bad posts to avoid instances where people get bad post votes because you disagree with them. Whether right or wrong I think the format of the post is more important (at least if they are wrong you get to start a debate).

Flaming- bad post. "Do you hear that Jackal!"

...KIDDING.

edit again: It also gives spammers something to aim for: useful spam I suppose. Instead of aiming for high post counts they aim for good post counts, or a good bad/good post ratio. I really like this idea.

Sat May 27, 2006 2:55 am

IMO, that would turn into a popularity contest. You don't like someone? You give him a bad post mark. Someone flamed you a while ago? You give him a bad post mark. As much as I respect some posters around here, I don't know if you can find 50 people who would be objective enough to handle this responsibility. If a ranking system is established, I would much rather see mods handle it. Same with banning.

Sat May 27, 2006 3:02 am

Well, as you say their might not be 50 but I dont think it should solely be up to the mods as there are a bunch of regular members who will never get an opportunity to be a mod (they have enough)and are fully capable of handling the responsibility. This could be a way for NLSC to show gratitude I suppose.

Your right though, 50 sounds like alot now that I think about it.

Sat May 27, 2006 3:07 am

No definetly not, it would totally set a new kind of tense feel, that would grade members into levels. The ranking group would be an elitist group.. no I just don't like the idea. It's just against a free online community. Like we're supposed to set a government here or something.

Sat May 27, 2006 7:57 am

I'd say Hitler-esque mod behaviour in the NBA Live sections and a bit more laid back, tolerating style in the general forums.

Well, at least I have a life and don't have five fucking thousand posts in one year. This forum is beginning to turn into a joke.

And then I get flamed for stuff for no apparent reason...yet I admit my mistake. Then these people just are 'accepted'.
