NLSC Graphics Comp - Sign ups over - Format posted, ideas?

Postby peaches on Wed May 17, 2006 11:29 pm

Well, the idea isn't fully developed yet but i think from feedback we could get this running.

An NLSC Graphics Comp!

Different from the Sig League in many aspects but the format in my idea would kind of be the same. As in week 1 we make a CD cover.. , Week 2, an advertising poster etc. there are limits to the dimensions and stuff but you pretty much wing it from there. No boundries and we'll have something like official judges to vote.

Anyone like it? It'll be an all around Graphics test on our skills. We wont kick it off straight away as some people are busy (Null, ck) and it would be better if everyone and anyone good was involved. I'd defnitely like to run it with some help from Jae, if hes willing.

I know this is pretty much something Cy will dominate but i reckon this will be a great idea. (y) Anyone up for it?

I'm not really good at making graphics or what not. But if there's room to judge or something, then sure I'll be willing (Y)

I'd participate, as long as the voting isn't the same as it is now. I think we should vote the same way the MVP voting is held...place votes for first, second, third, etc... no individual matchups.

I really like the idea... I would like to be in, but I don't know how much time I can dedicate to it.

what about the idea of having two-man teams so if one doesn't have as much time, they can get help from the other & vice-versa?

and I agree with Axel. Head to head isn't a great way to vote IMO

I don't know how well this would work, as doing something of that size takes longer than a sig. Maybe not have this as a running competition with set times and everything like the sig league. But every once in a while have a design to do that everyone can enter in. They'll still be standings of course, but it could be done the same way the NBA predictions have been done in the past. Did I make that clear enough? I'm not sure.

Completely defeats the purpose of the concept of a "league".

Either way, I'd join but I'm not interested in running another comp. Too much complaining to bother with.

^Hence the fact it's reffered to as a 'comp'. I see what they mean with their voting point though. Let's say you've got nbalive774 and wankster going up against each other, someone is going to get enough votes to win. On the other hand CK and Cy are going up against each other and make fantastic sigs, yet one of them is still behind either nbalive or wankster in the matchups. It eliminates that.

Well yeah, THIS is a comp. The sig league is a league, hence my reply to his annoyance at the current sig league voting system.

That's like saying Charlotte shouldn't play Atlanta because someone is going to get a win, while Dallas vs San Antonio will see one of the better teams get a loss.

Im open to any ideas on how the voting would work.. but in my mind i had it as, we had 4 judges vote on each matchup or just go with a public vote/poll each week.

I'll run it, but i'd prefer some help getting it kick started.

As far as the comp will run, get more feedback in people.

to kind of expand on my suggestion for "two-man teams", I think that one photoshop "veteran" should be paired with someone that's fairly new to the program to keep it fair. I'm just starting to pick it up and I think I could still learn a lot...

Seeing that Unrestrict3D likes a little competition, I'm in :P

Though I have my hands "full" with the Sig League competition, this will be a nice way to keep my design skills and creativity sharp over the summer despite the fact I'm currently working as a web designer for a printing press.

Another reason for making it more of an open contest. Lots of people leave periodically during the summer. Including me. I'll be gone for a month at one point.

Colin, i think the open comp sounds good at this point. We got a shitload of people.

Whats everyone else think of this? I had an idea also thinking about this and i thought one of the partners starts of the entry then sends over the psd to the other partner who finishes it off.

Jugs, Shotgun going with Cyanide or Jae.

I don't like the idea of pairing up, because more often than not the "veteran" is going to do the large majority of the work... the newer guys will either a) not be bothered doing anything because they're not as good, or b) be too intimidated to share their own ideas.

I completely agree. I'd rather be the lone warrior... or a geek who likes to make his own images.

I'd like to be in depending on when this starts. I'm in my exams period right now but when that's over I got loads of spare time.

Also my opinion (which y'all probably won't share with me) maybe make this not so much a contest but rather just make a task for people to make something in PS and then showcase what everyone has made. So the whole win/lose stuff and what it brings won't be there and people don't have to participate every single week.
