Was/Is your High School/College like the Movies?

Postby Stevesanity on Thu May 11, 2006 12:55 pm

I'm just wondering did/does anyone go to a high school where its like the movies in the sense you get the Football jocks and cheerleaders on one side and the nerds/geeks on one side, the goths/emo's on another side, the Indians on another etc.

I mean I didnt' really have that at my High School, it was all mixed. Our ball teams were obviously real popular with the ladies but most of them were swell people and even the cheerleaders for the respective teams were all pretty friendly chicks I mean yeah a very few of them were filthy rich spoilt bitches but the rest were mostly down to earth everyday "xoxoxo LaDDiezzSS" type.

Then the groups of people too, we had all sorts of races and no real majority in one race which made school pretty cool and thats why I have a host of friends from different backgrounds. I mean I would have friends on the ball teams, Chinese, South Asian, Euro's etc and even the nerds were not like totally neglected and beaten up, sure maybe the weirder ones were rather anti-social but the rest got along A OK. I'm not saying we were this hippie school but I just feel that it wasnt the movie scenario.

So I'm wondering, did your school have a movie like atmosphere or was it just normal social mixing without popularity and all that bullshit being taken into account?

We definitely had groups, there was very very little mixing between them and sometimes the more popular groups would recruit members from the lower groups that they thought could fit in  I always found that funny.

Basically like Stevesanity's, even though you have the sport jocks, we basically hang with people that are just cool people to be around. Like I'm cool with a bunch of jewish, caucasion and other types of races so it really don't matter who you are at my school. The only thing that will probably seperate you from the average person at my school is that you would most likely be nominated as a Who's Who person for your class or whatever because you would be well known around the school but thats about it.

There are different groups, but they aren't defined by being jocks or emo.

But we've got some teachers that remind me of the main character on "Teachers".

You have your group of friends and stuff but everyone gets along and I have a lot of friends listing from the jocks to the nerds...so it's pretty cool that you can have that kind of diversity.

Funny topic :D

Now Finland's school system can't be compared as much, but yes, we had the goths and the geeks. +I remember there was a girl grop similar as seen on Mean Girls. That was some hilarious stuff when thought about now.

There were different cliques, some more popular than others, but not to the extent of the stereotype in teen movies. Our year was actually pretty close and friendly for the most part.

I doubt any schools would be just like the movies, since movies exadurate and contrast stereotype interaction for laughs (or whatever other feeling the movie is trying to create).

At my school there weren't really cultural groups or anything. Just a bunch of people hanging around (1,300 were at my high school. So a pretty big bunch). The groups were pretty much determind by who you happened to be friends with, from my view. Except that the "nerdy" groups were just more anti-social, and the "popular" groups were less anti-social. Half the time (particularly towards the end of high school) the groups intertwined anyway, and everybody was mostly friends anyway.

Have ya guys taken a look at the movie "Bang, Bang You're Dead" ...its a really neat high school flick. Not the love story or comedy type of thing, its was sorta inspired(if thats the rite word to use) from the troubles High School's in America were facing after Columbine. I know I'm going a bit off queue here but I recommend you take a look at it cause its a pretty good movie, the acting isnt spectacular but its pretty good specially when the cast comprises of relatively unknowns.

I think their isnt movie type separation in all schools but it does apply to some of them because their is either a racial divide or a social background divide that can be clearly seen. I had a couzin of mine that said his school was really fucked and that from day one you had to choose your clique rite or risk being ignored by anyone. It was run by the upper class teens and he never had any friends from that school because everyone was very shady and only stuck with their cliques. Plus I know theirs still racial divide in many schools cause you'll get like 10 white/black/chinese or whatever dudes and they'll never be seen with anyone of different culture or color. I was lucky to go to a good school I guess, well the teachers and facilities were totally fucked but the atmosphere and the people were great.

We have our groups. The cool-Asians, the not-so cool Asians that play cards all day and talk about video games, the Chinese foreigners (which hang around mostly in the second floor. We call this area "China Town"), the gino/white people who are pretty much dumb jocks, the hippies or the people with vintage t-shirts and have gnarly, long, unwashed hair, the loud and ugly white girls, the loud and fatblack girls, and the not-so loud asian girls.

Everyone pretty much is friendly to each other though.

A simple no, simply because my school is like 90%-95% Asian :P . And there isnt like a cliche of dumb jocks mean girls and all that, everyone just blends in, mainly because, like I said earlier, almost everyone is Asian.

My high school (gr. 8-12) is just under 500 students in a town (and surrounding area) of about 4,000. Everyone knows everyone even though there is separate groups, like hockey players, basketball players, skids, skateboarders, 'druggies', etc. everyone bascially gets along with one another. Also, there isn't any racial groups either, and little to none racism in our school. Of course there are the few individuals that try to push themselves away from anyone else, it's not like everyone hates them. We're all just one big happy family. :?
