Any interview tips?

Postby Riot on Wed Apr 19, 2006 1:23 pm

I'm going in for a job interview on Thursday at Sears and I just wanted to know if anyone has any tips for dear old Riot. I pretty much suck at job interviews and I think this will be one of the "actual interviews" that I have done. The fast food interviews weren't really interviews, but I really want to get this Sears gig. I'm ready to come prepared and kiss some major ass.

So do any of you guys have any tips or anything about interviews for part time (student work)? I'm applying to be a footwear associate ( ) so keep that in mind.

Holla.

mantain eye contact. have a copy of your resume ready with you. kiss some major ass about how great the company is and how your skills make you the perfect candidate. when asked about your weaknesses, dont make yourself look too bad, for whatever you have a weakness, tell how you can improve on that. Dont stutter.

Hmm well Riot here's my advice.

First of all dress formal, no coat but long sleeve shirt, tie, black longs and black shoes. If you go dress smart casual you give yourself a more laid back look and thats a point burner.

Make sure you smell nice too, last thing they want is a guy that stinks in a shoe store.

Always be the first one to offer you hand for the shake and don't look threatened or fearful of the interviewee.

Stay calm and collected and remember to answer you question smart, dont go kissing too much of ass because some managers know an ass kisser and they tend not to like them. If they ask you want you want this job just say something witty and if you think the interviewee is into humour try to snap a few humourous comments(try not to go political, racial and so on).

Tell him your prepared to work any amount of hours(depending on your free days) and that you don't even mind working double shifts on your freedays. Nobody likes some guy that comes their and gives certain time limits and low availability so yeah give your maximum availability possible.

Always remember to smile and look fresh, dont look around all over or start giggling(make sure it is a proper laugh, not hysterical when he/she cracks a "joke"). If you look too serious and seem to show no interest in the interviewee they'll think you lack concentration and the friendliness thats needed for the job.

Make sure you give all your details about sports achievements and your previous work experience and how you like to work in groups and love meeting new people and helping others. Don't sound fake, make sure you sound as sincere as possible.

Anyway thats all I got Riot, hope it helps and the best of luck with the interview.

be polite, wait to be asked to be seated. Tell them your weakness is your handwriting and what you do to beat it is usually type work up or you could tell them that your friends say your a bit of a perfectionist, well it doesn't have to be all true does it

turn negatives into positives....it helped me get my new job....employers will often try & pick you or your achievements apart either to find weaknesses in character or to lower your salary expectations....although this probably doesn't apply for this job, so just maintain eye contact, smile, make a joke to break the ice (providing it's not a Bush or Taliban-style joke) & make the interviewer comfortable (heck, most people I know hate interviewing people for jobs, so make it easy on them)....be confident & sure of yourself, that you can do the job better than anyone else....good luck....

Riot: Oh
Interviewer: I'm offended
Riot: I'm just trying to break the ice
Interviewer: I like ice, leave it the fuck alone
Riot: Sorry

Be confident, relaxed, and sure of yourself. Don't try and pretend to be someone you're not, unless you're prepared to maintain that image for the entire time you work there. Have some ready answers to common questions in your mind, and as well have some questions ready of your own. They love people who ask intelligent questions. Good luck!

When they ask you questions, ask them questions also. It makes you sound like you care about your job.

make racial jokes about whatever race they are. if they don't laugh, then forget it. you don't want a boss that's too serious
