Is NLSC a waste of time for students?

Mon Mar 20, 2006 7:51 pm

Just wanna hear some opinions now... I think I spend an average of 1 hour here at NLSC. Just browsing for forums or topics that I may be interested in
I wonder if some of you here are addicted to this place and over spend your time here...

This thread is to replace my topic with South Park link. :x My bad :P

There's kinda already a topic on this, and a link to the said episode.

That's in This topic

Realistically, I visit NLSC everytime I sit behind a computer, up to several hours per day. I don't know what's your definition of 'waste of time', but I would say that this probably comes pretty close.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:08 am

Yeah, I spend an excessive amount of time on the NLSC. But I always tell myself to do my homework/studies before NLSC. So I come home from school at 3:30, do my homework and stuff, then its like 5:00. Then I spend the rest of the night on the NLSC...

Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:35 am

Waste of time? Definitely. Hell, I'm in TIK class right now and I'm browsing the forums when I'm supposed to be handing in an assignment soon.

 I should be doing that.....

But I choose to never do h/w, unless its important in which I leave til the last minute, sometimes literally last minute.

I guess thats why Im sucking at everything except English, woodwork and IT....

Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:54 am

What the hell is woodwork mac.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:55 am

He makes wood. You didn't think it grows on trees, did you?

Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:08 am

Woodwork = at our school its Materials. Just basically building shit out of wood. There's also metalwork, building shit out of metal.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 3:27 am

Yeah, I think sometimes I could better not visit NLSC for a day and spend more time on school stuff (keyword: more, it's not like I do nothing at all).

But on the other hand, NLSC has helped me improve my english to be on a really high level, I'm pretty confident I'm one of the (if not the) best English speaker/reader/writer at my school.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 3:39 am

I visit NLSC when I have "free time." Sure, I could be doing projects or working on my essay, but I find NLSC to be an escape to relax without too much thinking. I agree with cklitsie with helping my English, though we have a lot of people who type "yo iz what phat up?" Also, it gives me a chance to see what's new in current events and such.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 4:40 am

I'm pretty confident I'm one of the (if not the) best English speaker/reader/writer at my school.

Then again, the English spoken/read at the schools isn't of a very high level. I was apalled at the level of English that was being spoken here, opposed to the English spoken on the island.

I even got into a whole discussion with my teachers about it and they just wrote it off as "Curacao is closer to the US, they have a lot more influence from the US. Besides, they have American television."

I proceeded to ask them why we don't have American television, their response follows...

"The dutch television stations have a problem subtitling channels like NBC, ABC & CBS."

Why subtitle it? By letting them just hear it, peole will learn english. I've learned not to fight the system over here, everyones got a very "simple" answer to something, and if you counter it, they've got an even simpler answer by saying "those allochtonen" aka those foreigners.

Edit, On topic post:

Yes, I think the NLSC is bad for the school going kid, but it is up to that kid to be able to realise when he's dipping to low. The NLSC can't be written off as a reason to you flunking or doing bad in school, that's your own fault. You weren't strong enough to stay away.

Every time I've "retired" has been due to the pressure of almost flunking out. Everytime I've taken a break from the NLSC, it's been because I started feeling the heat. Then I stop visiting, work a little, pass & then come here to celebrate & the cycle repeats itself.

it totally is a waste of time :D

Tue Mar 21, 2006 5:11 am

I usually spend about half an hour lookin through the forums. When I get back from school, I watch TV or browse forums, h/w is a waste of time, cuz u don't learn much from it anyways, and I usually do it in my 1st class the next day.

No, it's not.

If you're not learning something from homework, or at least getting something out of it, then something's wrong with your teacher(s) or the schooling system.

maybe i went a lil too much there, but still, would u rather sit and write something(which u might not even use in life), or watch tv?

Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:20 am

I'd rather sit and write something and develop my critical thinking skills and learn something in the process (which is important in real life) than watch tv and learn how some guy broke out of a prison cell (which I might use in real life ).

Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:20 am

Jackal, you're absolutely right, but I'm still one of them (them=Dutch people; whose standard of English isn't too high).

This sentence makes me think there's something for you to learn.

I doubt it, I still have very good grades(3.5 GPA), even though I leave h/w for the last sec!

Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:53 am

The NLSC is gradually fucking up my education that's for sure. It's 7:30am and I'm supposed to be on a bus.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:54 am

Homework is a waste of time. I hardly ever do homework (or atleast correctly) and I never study for tests, not even finals.

Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:24 am

I spend too much time here lol, but the NLSC is kinda like my family away from family. I should be doing my HW right now, but I know if I don't browse here now, I probably won't at all.

Anyway, I hate homework. I already spend 6.5 hours a day in school, almost 40 a week, and when I come home, I want to relax, kick back, and watch some TV or play videogames. Homework makes me feel like I have no life at all. Our school handbook says AP(Advanced Placement) classes are allowed to give up to 3 hours of homework a night. Picture having 2 of them. Not to mention 2 other classes. Then balancing them with sports. During football season, I didn't get home until 7 pm. I'm hot, sweaty, tired, and smelly, do you think I want to sit down until 10 pm and do homework? Seriously, our school has block scheduling, which is 1.5 hours for each class, 4 classes a day. Is that not enough time to get done what we need?

Tue Mar 21, 2006 9:18 am

Jackal, you're absolutely right, but I'm still one of them

I don't mind it orso, as I said, it was just shocking, I hadn't expected that. Especially not after I was supposedly attending a "international" school. Little did I know "international" in Holland meant Turks & Marokkans. :|

Oh well, that phase is over & done with. Still sucks we can't get ABC due to subtitling, agree? We could've gotten some games at least!

That's nothing. If you're going to university, you better prepare yourself. We get at least3 hours of homework for every class you attend. Most of the time I do is devoted to school, and I rarely have alone time for myself these days. The weekend gives me a bit of a break, but still, I do homework.
